Do you like marmalade?

Do you like marmalade? I read somewhere recently that it's not as popular as it used to be especially with younger people and sales are down from what they were a few decades ago. Our kids - late teens, early twenties hardly touch it.

I've always loved it particularly the dark, bitter Seville orange variety with chunky bits of peel. I think I got that from my dad who was a big fan of Chivers Olde English Marmalade.

I've recently been working my way through a pot of Sicilian Blood Orange marmalade which was just delicious. I don't have it every day as I like to vary breakfasts a bit but marmalade on thickly buttered toast with a mug of tea on a winter's morning - heavenly!

The spread of the Gods!

monsteraa · 12/12/2023 04:47

Well I think from this thread there is no risk of marmalade manufacturers going out of business anytime soon!

Phew.

(I love it too).

You can't beat marmalade on toast for breakfast, it brightens up the morning!

@bakedpotatoforlunch we can be friends! I love the dark thick cut marmalades and the last few years myself and friend have made a batch of marmalade.

I keep it for special occasions as I rarely eat bread and only either make my own or buy from a bakery.

@bananasstink

Marmalade is less sweet, and has the ribs in it.

SnapdragonToadflax · 12/12/2023 07:53

No, hate it. It's bitter and horrible. But I don't like oranges much either, so not very surprising! There's an odd tang to it which I've never tasted in any other food and I really dislike.

Love jam though, especially black cherry, and bramble jelly.

FizzingAda · 12/12/2023 09:31

Love marmelade. I think it's maybe a grown up thing, like olives, cos I didn't like it as a child. Apart from the usual it's very nice in a marmelade cake.

App13 · 12/12/2023 09:37

Absolutely love it but it has to be very specific, ie thick rind and not silly sweet but sweet and a titch better .

I, for years was searching the best, I tried the absolute most expensive vs the cheap, the hand made stuff and niche kitchens and independent businesses.

The absolute best one out of the 100s tried was Waitrose Essential Seville Marmalade, thick cut.

Nothing beats it on buttered toast with a cup of lovely tea.

OldTinHat · 12/12/2023 09:41

Just to say thank you for the cake recipes! That's my afternoon sorted...!

Deathraystare · 12/12/2023 09:47

Love it ut then I am not young!

NoNoNanette · 12/12/2023 09:55

I love marmalade, the chunkier and more bitter the better. Happy Shopper Thick Cut is just exactly how I like it. DH can't stand any kind of marmalade.

Actually, I'd like to have a go at making a cake with marmalade. Does anyone have a good recipe?

I make this with the marmelade I've run out of jars for when I do my annual batch in January. It's delicious.

Marmalade Pudding Cake

Now, this is a beauty. I don't mean flash or fancy — rather the opposite; there is something austerely handsome about its appearance, and yet gorgeously warming about its taste. But then, this laid-back Sunday-lunch pudding is what kitchen food is all...

I disagree - most of the people who say they love iton this thread seem to make their own or have their Mum's marmelade.

Maybe we should be getting shop-bought just to encourage them!

CharlottePimpernel · 12/12/2023 10:38

I love it. I make it most years. I love it on toast with peanut butter!

me too, i love one toast with marmalade and the other toast with peanut butter. Stellar combination!

Hate it

BaronessBomburst · 12/12/2023 12:27

I love any kind of marmalade slathered on buttered toast.
Unfortunately the toast slathers itself on my hips so I've had to give it up. 😭
My grandma's recipe is for rhubarb and orange marmalade. It's a bit runny, but wonderful.

Heronatemygoldfish · 12/12/2023 12:42

I adore it. I too make my own. I prefer lemon, which is not seasonal so I don't have to wait until Seville season if I run out. DS has started pinching it too. Recipe is lemon jelly marmalade from an old old recipe book you can only order a photocopy of from amazon!

One of my favourite uses is a teaspoon of it in a portion of natural yoghurt which serves as both sugar and flavour. Much better than shop yoghurt!

Pinkpinkpink15 · 12/12/2023 17:54

KCSIE · 12/12/2023 00:59

Mine is my late Grandma's recipe with her hints and tips scribbled down the side including brands of sugar to avoid as they don't give a good set! All in her writing and dated 1942 😍 thick cut bitter orange marmalade ☺️

I love it. I make a batch every 6months, does about 12-15 jars depending on jar size. Most get gifted but the rest get devoured in house pretty quickly by myself, DH and 3yo.

Shop bought marmalade just isn't anywhere close.

@KCSIE what a lovely thing to have. My Dads Mum was my favourite person in the world, but she wasn't 'a cook' or a 'Maker' of any kind! My mums mum died when she was a little girl.

My Great Aunt (now 96) used to make jam/marmalade, but isn't up to it anymore 😢

maybe I need to adopt a 3rd Nana 😆

Rayna37 · 12/12/2023 18:14

I love it- the darker the better and thick cut. I like a fancy jar but most shops do a dark thick cut one cheaply that I'd be happy with.

Would never choose jam over marmalade for breakfast toast, but jam has a place (including on nice bread; I would only use marmalade on toast).

The caveat here and possible reason for a decrease in popularity more generally is that I try to eat low carb so both toast and marmalade are rare treats; I'm more likely to have a nut butter if I do eat toast at all. Most commonly breakfast is eggs.

furtivetussling · 12/12/2023 18:17

I like a nice marmalade, but we don't get through all that much of it.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 12/12/2023 20:37

Not really.

SleepyRooster · 12/12/2023 20:38

Delicious when dolloped In porridge

bakedpotatoforlunch · 12/12/2023 23:47

Amazing responses which I'm loving reading. I hadn't expected anything like so many. So hopefully such enthusiasm does show that marmalade will live on yet!

I do agree that shop-bought marmalade can be very sweet. I sometimes go for specifically low-sugar/no added sugar options although they tend to be the lighter fine-cut marmalades rather than the dark, chunky variety that I really love.

Best of all I agree is home-made. We've got a lovely neighbour who makes his own in great quantities and every so often we'll find a couple of jars left on the doorstep. I've never made marmalade myself but this thread and the fact that the Seville orange season is looming is inspiring me to have a go!
