Do you like marmalade?

Do you like marmalade? I read somewhere recently that it's not as popular as it used to be especially with younger people and sales are down from what they were a few decades ago. Our kids - late teens, early twenties hardly touch it.

I've always loved it particularly the dark, bitter Seville orange variety with chunky bits of peel. I think I got that from my dad who was a big fan of Chivers Olde English Marmalade.

I've recently been working my way through a pot of Sicilian Blood Orange marmalade which was just delicious. I don't have it every day as I like to vary breakfasts a bit but marmalade on thickly buttered toast with a mug of tea on a winter's morning - heavenly!

Love it but can’t have marmalade in the house cos the toaster would be permanently on. Have to restrict it to hotel breakfasts!

TheCompactPussycat · 13/12/2023 00:29

I love marmalade. But only bitter Seville orange marmalade and only really if it is home-made. Shop bought marmalade is much too sweet.

I try and make my own Seville orange marmalade after Christmas every year but I had Covid last Christmas and didn't make any. I'm on my last jar at the moment! 😱

LadyEloise1 · 13/12/2023 08:55

I don't but DH does so if I see something a bit unusual marmalade or jam wise ( I'm not a fan ) I buy it for him.
He told me the other day he just likes Old Time Irish Marmalade Coarse Cut, none of this fancy stuff. Smile
DCs eat anything.

I used to love lime marmalade. Haven't had it for years. Quick question? What is the difference between jam and marmalade?

Marmalade was originally made from quinces not oranges, they are still called Marmello in Spain.

I make a quince and orange marmalade. It is like having summer in a jar. This year I added peaches in that I'd harvested from next doors peach tree and frozen and it is glorious.

Spanish for quince is membrillo, which is also the quince paste/confection.
Portuguese is marmelo.
It is surprisingly difficult to define the distinction between jam and marmalade.

Love it! On toast, Jacob's cream crackers, croissants etc etc. Adult children hate it, and grandchildren - Nutella all the way. Not on crumpets though, pinch of salt and a dollop of real butter.

queenofthewild · 13/12/2023 12:32

I love the smell. But the bitterness always takes me by surprise. I've tried to love it. But I can't.

DaftyInTheMiddle · 13/12/2023 12:32

It's ok but I would never choose it.

LuluLemony · 13/12/2023 12:34

Oh I LOVE marmalade! Only on toast though, not in sandwiches.

Cwtshcwtsh · 13/12/2023 12:38

I detest it but was obsessed with it when pregnant.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 13/12/2023 12:44

Love it.

Home-made does taste the best. We make a batch or two a year and trade a few jars with friends who do the same. Difficult to buy a good marmalade.

Eying up the last few quinces and thinking of a quick batch of quince and orange marmalade.

Agree about overly sweet marmalade being dislikeable and I do prefer home made over shop bought. Has to be Tiptree tawny really, the rest is just orange jam which isn’t what I want. Duerrs is too sweet for me.

I wrote above that I like Duerrs, but actually, upon reading the jar, it's Frank Coopers Oxford marmalade we actually have.

Eyesopenwideawake · 13/12/2023 13:14

With 3 massive orange trees I make loads - 20 jars so far this year. Makes good presents 😀

TheChosenTwo · 13/12/2023 13:15

Theoretically yes I like it but I haven’t eaten it in maybe 15 years! Mil used to make some but she doesn’t anymore.
Not something I’d think to buy as I don’t really eat toast and that’s all I would spread marmite on if I was to have it.

Chemenger · 13/12/2023 13:17

I hate it, except Roses Lime marmalade- it’s lovely. I’m in my 60’s. Neither of my dds like it.

Sarvanga38 · 13/12/2023 13:19

Love it. Mostly make pink grapefruit marmalade these days. Mum used to be in charge of making the orange marmalade, but she is no longer with us so I will have to take up that mantle some day.

Fizbosshoes · 13/12/2023 13:19

I hate it, and peel.
One memory when I was a teenager was being served peel cake by an elderly friend and not wanting to appear rude, so carefully picking out all the bits of peel, when they were talking to someone else/pouring tea etc, and transferring to napkin on my lap!

ArsenicInTheAppleTart · 13/12/2023 13:20

No.

I try it every couple of years to see if my taste buds have shifted, But not so far.

I’m a jam gal.

RedPanda2022 · 13/12/2023 21:16

No

Ossobuco · 13/12/2023 21:20

Marmalade on toast with bacon on top is really on my mind now

CheerfulBunny · 13/12/2023 21:32

I love marmalade and make it according to Nigella's recipe from How To Eat every January. It's reasonably easy - you boil the whole Seville oranges, then cut up and add a horrific amount of sugar. Tastes- and smells- heavenly! Far superior to shop bought, it's fresher somehow?

TheGander · 16/12/2023 18:56

I love it and look forward to the appearance of Seville oranges in the supermarket, usually just after Christmas. Then I make enough to last nearly a year.

BlackForestCake · 26/01/2024 21:00

Wow, I thought there would be loads of marmalade threads.

This is your reminder you've got about a week left to buy Seville oranges before they disappear again.

Marmalade-related: I made a Dundee cake this week using this recipe: www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/dundee_cake_22157

One of the best cakes I've ever made. The marmalade addition is the key. I did also grate in some lemon and orange rind, which was my own twist. There's whisky in it too, which helps with moistness.

I love it! My kids, 18 and 20, do not. They prefer strawberry jam. Hate lemon curd though 🤢.
