Do you like marmalade?

Do you like marmalade? I read somewhere recently that it's not as popular as it used to be especially with younger people and sales are down from what they were a few decades ago. Our kids - late teens, early twenties hardly touch it.

I've always loved it particularly the dark, bitter Seville orange variety with chunky bits of peel. I think I got that from my dad who was a big fan of Chivers Olde English Marmalade.

I've recently been working my way through a pot of Sicilian Blood Orange marmalade which was just delicious. I don't have it every day as I like to vary breakfasts a bit but marmalade on thickly buttered toast with a mug of tea on a winter's morning - heavenly!

I love marmalade. I don't remember when I first had it; maybe my dad was a fan. My fav is orange. The blood orange sounds dreamy. I think it would be fun to make but I am the only one in the house who likes it (how can someone NOT like it?!) so I have never made it. OK. Now I am craving marmalade!!!!!

Just making my 2nd batch now and have another 2 kilo of oranges to use
We like it for sure!

The Sevilles are in the house, plus a couple of pink grapefruits and a couple of blood oranges. Need to get busy.

Love the proper stuff

Proper marmalade is really bitter, it's not for everyone.

KirstenBlest · 30/01/2024 07:47

@BlackForestCake , I don't think it's bitter but it is compared to things like jam
Mmm. Toast and marmalade.

BarrelOfOtters · 30/01/2024 07:52

My mum used to make jars of it with massive tins of Seville orange pulp. Not sure you can even get them now. This was in the 1970s. Sh3 ate it all her life.

I really dislike it…sometimes she’d use a marmaladey knife in the butter, just a trace of marmalade on the butter tranfrerred to my toast and I can still taste it.

BarrelOfOtters · 30/01/2024 07:53

I don’t like sweet stuff on toast apart from blackcurrant jam, sometimes. Like bitter flavours otherwise so should in theory like marmalade.

@BarrelOfOtters , you can still buy it. Doesn't sound like you want to though.
I hate butter with things like crumbs in it.
