Do you like marmalade?

Do you like marmalade? I read somewhere recently that it's not as popular as it used to be especially with younger people and sales are down from what they were a few decades ago. Our kids - late teens, early twenties hardly touch it.

I've always loved it particularly the dark, bitter Seville orange variety with chunky bits of peel. I think I got that from my dad who was a big fan of Chivers Olde English Marmalade.

I've recently been working my way through a pot of Sicilian Blood Orange marmalade which was just delicious. I don't have it every day as I like to vary breakfasts a bit but marmalade on thickly buttered toast with a mug of tea on a winter's morning - heavenly!

I didn't like it until I was given it in hospital after giving birth to my DD - at that point it was honestly one of the best things I eaten (mainly because I'd been in labour for a very long time & not eaten anything!).
After that I liked it; don't have it often, maybe a few times a year.
DH likes it but prefers jam (I make our own) & DC (9&5) don't like it (too bitter).

I love it but hardly ever buy it for some reason.

Hedonism · 11/12/2023 22:42

I love it. I make my own though, so I wouldn't count in the sales figures!

I'd love a marmalade cake recipe too. I sometimes add a couple of spoonfuls when I'm making a tea loaf.

I love marmalade. DH makes vast quantities when Seville oranges are in season (using his granny’s recipe). And when we run out of that, I like Tiptree’s Three Fruits marmalade, or their Grapefruit.

Marmalade on buttery toast, and coffee, are the only things that make miserable winter mornings bearable.

I love it, we all do here. I never used to like thick cut but do now. I've got a jar of Duerrs Seville orange marmalade which I did a delicious chicken dish with at the weekend and when I tasted the marinade I made a mental note to have some on toast for breakfast as I'd not had it got a while.
I also love the clementine marmalade I make after Christmas with the leftover small oranges.

I love homemade marmalade but I find shop bought stuff too sweet. I make a big batch every January and it lasts me all year as I'm the only one who eats it!

I love blood oranges and pink grapefruit so I always mean to try making different types. Actually I add one lemon to each batch of my marmalade and I always enjoy the bits of lemon peel so maybe I should try just lemon?

Actually, I'd like to have a go at making a cake with marmalade. Does anyone have a good recipe?

Just your basic chocolate Victoria sponge cut in half with marmalade in the middle and chocolate on top is very good.
I keep meaning to try something different as well.

SkaneTos · 11/12/2023 23:17

I don't like marmalade.
I don't like jam.
I don't like jelly.

(I'm 36 years old).

Love it. Tiptree darkest

Ossobuco · 12/12/2023 00:41

Old fashioned Tawny marmalade yes. I feel questionable about the bits (I really hate candied peel) but I absolutely can’t eat a cooked breakfast without marmalade on the toast. After I’ve picked any big chunks of peel out of it and left them on my plate. Grin

OutOfSyncWithReality · 12/12/2023 00:45

My ultimate comfort food! Brown bread with Frank Coopers marmalade - lush!

Ossobuco · 12/12/2023 00:47

Agree about overly sweet marmalade being dislikeable and I do prefer home made over shop bought. Has to be Tiptree tawny really, the rest is just orange jam which isn’t what I want. Duerrs is too sweet for me.

@dizzydizzydizzy

i implore you to keep a copy of her recipe safe & spend time making it with her, learn all her tips & techniques!!

Mine is my late Grandma's recipe with her hints and tips scribbled down the side including brands of sugar to avoid as they don't give a good set! All in her writing and dated 1942 😍 thick cut bitter orange marmalade ☺️

I love it. I make a batch every 6months, does about 12-15 jars depending on jar size. Most get gifted but the rest get devoured in house pretty quickly by myself, DH and 3yo.

Shop bought marmalade just isn't anywhere close.

Used to love Roses Lemon and Lime marmalade as a child

sadsack78 · 12/12/2023 01:13

I'm in my late 20s and love it, if that helps :)

SiobhanSharpe · 12/12/2023 01:14

Home made marmalade is the absolute best. I agree that most shop bought types are far too sweet. I make my own and cut the amount of sugar given in most recipes from 2lb sugar to 1lb oranges to the same weight of sugar to fruit eg 1 kg sugar/1kg fruit.
I think the reason for the high amount of sugar in traditional recipes was simply because it could be done, due to the bitterness of the fruit, and the fact that it also increased the yield.
We go to southern Spain each January and the orange trees in the streets are a wonderful sight, heavy with bitter oranges, but it breaks my heart that most of them suddenly disappear, picked all at once to be pulped and turned into animal feed. (Britain is pretty much the sole customer for Seville oranges and the ones we import are mostly organic, not from the street trees.)
DH picked some of these for me last year, helped by council workmen! The marmalade I made from them was lovely, I labelled it Jerez Orange marmalade, not Seville.
Luckily most of my family and friends really appreciate a home made marmalade.

CosyFanTucci · 12/12/2023 01:17

I make a batch every January that lasts us the whole year. It packs a punch!

Gowlett · 12/12/2023 01:22

I like it. Good winter food. Marmalade & butter on toast.

Traditional Dundee cake has marmalade in the recipe, it doesn't dominate the taste of the cake but adds a nice flavour to it

Yep! So much so that I think I might be Paddington.

evtheria · 12/12/2023 02:21

Love it! DS is 9 and likes it too.

bananasstink · 12/12/2023 04:03

I used to love lime marmalade. Haven't had it for years. Quick question? What is the difference between jam and marmalade?
