Jamie Oliver -5 ingredients Quick and easy

I'm in need of a distraction project from life - anyone fancy joining me in an attempt to cook my way through Jamie Oliver's latest?

So far .. have made Quick and easy fish curry. Made this for DM and I - went down well with us both. Used haddock as cheap and the rest was store cupboard which was handy. I was a bit heavy handed with the lime pickle and it showed in the taste so I'd def recommend to stick to his quantities there. The result was lovely and we both cleaned our plates though! Timing said 15 minutes or so and I couldn't do it in that as he had you both halving tomatoes and chopping the fish and then cooking the tomatoes all at the same time... so I did the prep in advance

Also tried Korean Rice - with Kim chi. This was a super tasty and easy lunch to put together. Really enjoyed it both of us (Dh and I). I wouldn't need the recipe next time as it's a great idea and technique to get your head around and will be good to have at my fingertips.

Plan tonight is harissa chicken tray bake.. looking forward to it!

I've seen good things about the flatbreads on here and I'm also planning those for tomorrow

Asian fried eggs with the flatbreads for lunch - delicious. Both me and Dh loved it and incredibly simple

Anyone know if preserved lemons are the same as 'sliced lemons in their own juice'?. It does say 'preserved' in own juice in small print on the side. Tried 3 places & these were the only things that
seemed remotely similar!! My DD is keen for me to try the lamb shoulder....

despondentatwork · 16/09/2017 19:55

Half-did you get a bargain price? By the time I checked, it had gone back to 11.99 in Tesco😩

halfbuffy · 16/09/2017 21:34

Despondent no sadly I got it full price but it looks well worth it! Also really enjoy how there's a picture of every finished dish...I never follow recipes in books that don't have them, I think it's because I can't picture myself eating them! Confused

DandySeaLioness · 17/09/2017 01:56

Made the messy burger buns today. 5/10, DP said they were dry (I agree). The sauce wasn't very flavourful either and the pesto did nothing towards the overall effect.

CFranS · 17/09/2017 03:23

I made the teriyaki chicken wings (served with rice) and they were really tasty. A friend made the shortbread with chocolate and orange and they were delicious too.

tigermousewoman · 17/09/2017 07:27

Despondent (sorry I don't know how to highlight usernames) no they're not the same thing. Sainsburys near me stocks preserved lemons but they're not that easy to get hold of.

I did make some before but I think you need to allow a couple of weeks- I got the recipe by googling and I think it may have been a Nigella one

The user that made the baked saffron rice - did you have it on its own or with something? I'm thinking it's a side?

BertrandRussell · 17/09/2017 08:22

The sticky lamb chops were delicious. The fish cakes were nice but a bit bland- I'm going to try again and double the flavoring ingredients.

Wheelycote · 17/09/2017 08:25

Just watched these programs on 4All. I'll join in, have to wait till the end of the month though. I meal plan and do a monthly shop. Have food and meals sorted until 27th

BertrandRussell · 17/09/2017 09:24

The other thing I noticed with an active teenage boy is that the portions are quite small. I've done several of the 4 portion ones for the 3 of us expecting to have a portion left over, but I never have. And dp and ds were both foraging later.....

tigermousewoman · 17/09/2017 15:22

Curried ham and egg noodles- very simple and straightforward as I'm starting to get used to with this book. Could easily imagine doing this after getting in from work and was very 'store cupboard' with its five so I can imagine making again

Made the gnarly peanut chicken last night- it wasn't very "gnarly" but tasted nice for sure - not much faff either. Served with stir fried lettuce (from ping Malaysia) and rice. All came together nicely

Chicken pesto puff was so so good!!! I really recommend it! I did bulk it out with some roast potatoes too though 👌🏼

muffinlondon · 18/09/2017 05:51

Chicken pastry puff on the list...

Needalifeoverhaul · 18/09/2017 06:14

Ginnybaker they sell Kimchi in Sainsbury's...in the specialist food section. In mine, its in the herbs and spices aisle

NomDePrune · 18/09/2017 20:06

Sticky Lamb Chops a winner here - although garlic did not cook through enough to eat. Lovely flavours, made Rosti potato at the same time and it was a good combo. Only used 2 oranges but in fact 3 would have given the right amount of sauce.

BertrandRussell · 18/09/2017 20:13

Dp's just doing the sticky lamb chops for the second time as I type!

tigermousewoman · 18/09/2017 20:57

I failed a bit on the sticky lamb chops- seemed to take forever. Was lovely though- but keeping the "rack" together was not easy...

OP posts:
NomDePrune · 18/09/2017 22:08

Yes we bought lamb as a rack, sealed intact then cut through to make separate chops. But then frying pan wasn't big enough for lamb and carrots. Also wouldn't recommend watching on catch-up and trying to cook along with partner and Jamie both shouting instructions!
By the way Aldi have coloured carrots, 90p, aimed at kids. Actually called Unicorn Carrots. Next to the Sweet Potato Piggies.

BalancingStick · 23/09/2017 21:36

I've done a few recipes and am really liking this book - so easy and simple.
Carrot and mixed grain salad - really nice (and filling)
Super green spaghetti - thought this was a bit bland
Harissa tray bake - really nice
Asian fishcakes - super yum (could have eaten loads of these)
Baked garlicky mushrooms - super yum (I didn't have cheddar so swapped for stilton which was good)

Next week I am doing:
Salmon Nicoise
Carbonara
one of the tuna dishes
easy fish curry
Spinach curry

rocknrollin · 24/09/2017 15:52

Just bought this book on the back of the TV series. Really looking forward to trying some of these.

Usually not a fan of JO's books. The timings and quantities never work out for me. But the ginger beef had me salivating while watching his programme so I'm going to give it a go!

samuelkrahl · 24/09/2017 18:15

We made this tonight. It was tasty but really watery - did your sauce thicken?

BarkeepersFriend · 24/09/2017 21:40

We made the green spaghetti dish - the cavalo nero cabbage thing. It's amazingly delicious!

Cakescakescakes · 26/09/2017 14:47

Did the pork and mash gratin last night. Very very nice! Gnarly chicken was nice but also not as gnarly as a pp said. Tonight is ginger shakin beef!

Orangeplastic · 26/09/2017 15:20

Doing the lamb shoulder and chickpeas tonight - hope it tastes good because it was remarkably quick!
