Jamie Oliver -5 ingredients Quick and easy

I'm in need of a distraction project from life - anyone fancy joining me in an attempt to cook my way through Jamie Oliver's latest?

So far .. have made Quick and easy fish curry. Made this for DM and I - went down well with us both. Used haddock as cheap and the rest was store cupboard which was handy. I was a bit heavy handed with the lime pickle and it showed in the taste so I'd def recommend to stick to his quantities there. The result was lovely and we both cleaned our plates though! Timing said 15 minutes or so and I couldn't do it in that as he had you both halving tomatoes and chopping the fish and then cooking the tomatoes all at the same time... so I did the prep in advance

Also tried Korean Rice - with Kim chi. This was a super tasty and easy lunch to put together. Really enjoyed it both of us (Dh and I). I wouldn't need the recipe next time as it's a great idea and technique to get your head around and will be good to have at my fingertips.

Plan tonight is harissa chicken tray bake.. looking forward to it!

I've seen good things about the flatbreads on here and I'm also planning those for tomorrow

I'm going to try the rendang tonight. I've never made a real one so nothing to compare, but we have agreed to follow the recipes to the letter, however tempting it is to add stuff....We have to watch each other like hawks to forestall any cheating because we're both cooks........

plus3 · 09/10/2017 21:44

Can I join you? DD & I are watching the show, and have been completely inspired! So far we have cooked:
Super Green spaghetti - Maybe a bit too virtuous for us..I scaled up for 4, but it lacked something..

Speedy Spiced Prawn Rice - easy to do, think you could chuck in some chilli & extra veg though.

Apple crumble cookies - fab & quick, went down v.well

Plum tart tatin - did this for a dinner party (never learn to not experiment on guests) I didn't have the right size pan (mine was bigger) so choose not turn onto plate at end...guests loved it

Buddy's Flapjack biscuits - did at the end of a 14hr day for the next day school cake sale - very easy & apparently sold well! (Although I though quantity made was small)

Frozen Banoffee Cheesecake - made for another party (improvised with Bonne mamam salted caramel sauce as couldn't find any dulce de Leche anywhere) another hit.... although I do wonder if people just like being fed.....

Have to say I love this book - Jamie at home is my other favourite book of his. The recipes always just work & mostly loved by the family.

Another joiner here please. So far I've made the green pasta (which I loved), the lamb and chickpea dish which everyone seemed to enjoy, the orange and polenta cake (which was very dry and rather tasteless I found), and the cherry tomato, fish and rice one with green olive tapenade, which was a big hit.

I've been keen to try the flatbreads ever since I saw Dame's thread, but haven't quite got to them yet. From last night's episode I really fancy those little steamed puddings with marmalade sauce. Smile

tigermousewoman · 10/10/2017 15:20

All welcome to join!

Bertrand- how did the rendang go? We didn't have tea in the end last night so still got it to go..

Report back on the state of the oven after the tikka roast chicken. FunkinEll Wow dishwasher cleans racks - not perfectly but the grease is too old to admit, definitely worth shoving them in the dishwasher!

sarasabrownie · 10/10/2017 17:24

Just prepared the Harissa chicken bake and put in oven following recipe instructions. Went on YouTube and found a video of him doing it and he put a load of olive oil on the veg that wasn't mentioned in the recipe book! As I was doing it I thought it should have some olive oil on it but then thought maybe the Rose Harrisa has enough in it. Have just taken the dish out after 25 minutes and added a generous glug of olive oil and mixed it all about and am hoping that it will still do the trick. Also, I could have done with watching how you cut down the back of the chicken - I ended up wrestling with mine on the counter trying to hack through the bone - he made it look much easier! Will report back. I have a 1.3kg chicken rather than a 1.2kg chicken and I anticipate it taking much longer than 50 minutes. I did the Green spaghetti thing yesterday and that was nice - the kids ate it (but both baulked at Ricotta so added more parmesan). My kitchen looked like a swamp afterwards Grin

sarasabrownie · 10/10/2017 18:15

Well the Harissa chicken was nice - quite a mild flavour actually. Kids liked it and ate the roast veg which was a bit oily but that's probably because I lathered the olive oil on it in a panicked fashion half way through the cooking time (see above!) Nearly spoilt the whole thing by cooking up a microwave bag of Merchant Gourmet seeds (Quinoa and Chia) that ended up smelling like rotten fish. Had to put it outside the kitchen door to stop the kids using it as an excuse not to eat the chicken! Ended up having basmati and green beans with it.

BertrandRussell · 10/10/2017 18:18

Didn't make the rendang in the end-dp came home feeing sick and only wanted soup. Going to make it on Friday-will report back.

Made the creamy Mustard Chicken this evening - essentially chicken stroganoff. Had it with sweet potato mash & broccoli. Hit with the family (although DC complained about the SP mash...)

Textpectation · 10/10/2017 21:26

Plus3 I tried the apple crumble cookies and thought they were bland, couldn't taste the apple and the apple chips were hard to find. Ok biscuits but undelivered their name.

perhapstomorrow · 10/10/2017 22:00

Just tried his steamed pudding. Tasted nice but very heavy. Think I must have done something wrong.

tigermousewoman · 11/10/2017 21:17

Sticky chicken wings: not very sticky but really tasty. I used a bit too much teriyaki and could have done with more of a chilli kick (like my chilli)

Had with hoisin pak choi rice - which was great and will definitely be cooking pak choi this way again.

Green spaghetti - it was ok but lacked something. There is a similar Jamie Oliver recipe on line which also includes leeks which might make the difference. My fussy children refused to eat it anyway.

Ollivander84 · 12/10/2017 18:42

Mustard chicken - lovely. I might have added a tiny squeeze of lemon if I had any!

Yazoop · 13/10/2017 08:43

Tried the easy sausage carbonara the other day - 'twas simple but very tasty! Not sure I would call it a carbonara in the classic sense, but was lovely in its own right. The seasoning of the sausage with freshly ground pepper makes all the difference in terms of bringing it all together.

DearTeddyRobinson · 13/10/2017 09:01

Sigh. I'm a shit cook obviously. Tried the banging beef stew which was tasteless and watery. Tried the herby chicken on the oven rack thing, the potatoes under it were good but the chicken was boring and a bit stringy.
Kids wouldn't eat either.
Pesto chicken was nice though. Baked risotto thing was ok. Bit pissed off, I had high hopes this book would turn me into a domestic goddess 😟

Shockers · 13/10/2017 09:05

My son is working his way through this book at present. He often phones to wax lyrical about how good his meal was! Grin.

user1487671808 · 13/10/2017 09:25

I did the tikka chicken at the weekend. I used a 1.7kg free range chicken straight on the shelf and put the spuds (skin on) and cauliflower with olive oil and red wine vinegar salt and pepper underneath. Cooked it for about 2 hrs and it was fab. Next time I will try slitting the top so the paste goes into the chicken but it is as great and the potatoes were amazing. Kids said it needs gravy but i thought it was fine.

Messy meatballs also done. Pesto was a really nice touch but the tomato sauce wasn't popular.

Flatbreads worked really well with a curry as kids said they weren't as dry as a naan.

I'm definitely going to buy the book.

charlotte2798 · 13/10/2017 17:28

Wow - impressive!! I ban any discussion during the Archers!

charlotte2798 · 13/10/2017 17:31

Sorry, thought I was relying too a specific post! Never mind - I've got Jamie's Roast tikka chicken in the oven at the moment... it smells delicious. I bought a huge chicken so I'm roasting it in a tin for an hour first, then draining the fat and putting the veg in that tin and the chicken on the rack above for another hour. Fingers crossed.

Hunkle · 14/10/2017 14:56

Ive gone and bought the book. £11 Tesco.

Now to find energy to cook Confused

charlotte2798 · 14/10/2017 16:27

Well, the Roast Tikka Chicken was absolutely delicious and all the family loved it, so I'll be doing that again. I've never made a traybake like this before... It was so easy, so I'll be trying the others in the book v. soon.

Hunkle · 14/10/2017 17:54

Im just eating the mushroom pasta, its bloody lovely. Im crap at cooking.

Ocies · 14/10/2017 18:10

I cooked the sticky pork stir fry which was lovely and the sausage and apple bake which was great too. I am in a complete rut with evening meals particularly now both dc are away at uni and work so have high hope for this book.

MsHippo · 14/10/2017 18:20

We just had the whole chicken and squash Thai soup and it was absolutely delicious! Added some mange tout and vermicelli noodles and it went down a storm.
