Has anyone seen The Odyssey film yet and what did you think

Anyone booked or been to see The Odyssey. I’m booked for Sunday. I don’t really care about the casting, as it’s a myth.
So I’m looking forward to it!

I am reading this one as well but it's proving to be a real chore. It lacks flow and I wish I have chosen other translation.

It was grand, and lots of famous actors in it, nobody massively standing out though, although I guess Matt Damon was good. Good to see Elliott Paige in a movie again, that’s been awhile! I thought Robert Patterson was good as well. And the blind guy. Tom Holland was just Tom Holland again, as he always is, and Zendaya the same. Reasonable enough way to pass nearly 3 hours. But I won’t be thinking about it for long. RIP the wonderful Dog. And all the other dogs who died in the film.

I have never watched a film before that has been soooooo discussed on social media - What did the changed ending mean? Why the medieval armour on the giants - what did it meeean? What did he (Nolan) meeeeeeeean with this, that, the other? Jeez, can't we just watch a film for entertainment any more? Apparently not... didn't even watch it in the right format - just plain ordinary digital IMAX is not how Nolan intended it to be watched - has to be IMAX 70mm.
It is just a film.

I adored the stories as a kid. Does anyone else remember the Tony Robinson version on CBBC? I know he’s known for being a bit of a knob now but he really brought the stories to life - they were poignant but also very funny in places. I read them to my DC when they were younger & they loved them too. The bit with the dog was always very sad…poor Argos

I went to see it today.
it was long but didn’t feel long. I loved it
its the loudest film I’ve ever been to see, had to cover my ears at some points.

Saw it at an Everyman with an Old Fashioned and a carrot cake. Really good.

Thought Tom Holland was quite forgettable though.

The cyclops and the pigs will stay with me forever.

We loved it. I think it wasn't quite perfect but it managed to be both an astonishing spectacle and also a quieter reckoning with trauma, loss, regret. We both want to see it again.

Saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. Didn’t feel like a long film.

I felt I was watching Star Wars several times (and Planet of the Apes at the start).
Although there is obviously a lot of fighting I don’t remember seeing any actual blood other than after the sacrifice scene, I hate violent films but found this perfectly ok to watch.
I also found the ‘mom’ and ’dad’ jarring.
I’d give it 7 / 10 and say it’s a definite cinema film.

Yep!!! It was BRILLIANT!! Bit like Jackanory but much funnier. I read and reread the books..

I went to the imax and really loved it. Best film I’ve seen in a while.

I think a trans man could have played Sinon but Elliot doesn’t pass so it threw me off a bit. Especially as you see them as a young boy.

Oh my goodness that dialogue sounds absolutely crass.

We left after an hour and a half….too gruesome and repetitive. I know it’s
an episodic plot but the format didn’t seem to deviate from “island + bad thing + everyone runs for the ships”. I had expected to be wowed so looked at reviews when I got home - thought this was an entertaining and perceptive one…

Thanks, that's made my mind up for me. I won't be going unless it's to use the cinema as somewhere cool, speaking of temperature only, to sit for 3 hours.

Charlize Theron’s Calypso likewise only really functions as a sounding board, ambling after him in the sand with drinks and lotus flowers. The flowers, it’s suggested, are secretly to stop Odysseus remembering who he is. The movie makes no mention of her keeping him as a sex slave for eight years. Homer’s Calypso is a great part. Nolan’s is some woman who runs a beach bar and is thinking of pivoting to psychotherapy.
These changes consistently make the women either more boring or more bonkers. The scenes with Samantha Morton’s Circe start promisingly, as she cooks a feast for Odysseus’s men in her Landmark Trust-ish cottage (good spoons, no telly) before vengefully turning them all into pigs. Odysseus comes by, twigs what she’s done and persuades her to reverse the spell not by – as in the poem – a year of sex and complex rhetoric, but just a quick word, conceding that men can be awful, but these ones aren’t too bad, as it goes."

I really enjoyed but agree with the ‘mom and dad’ how did that get allowed?!

Robert Pattison I thought played a great villain. He’s found his calling. I don’t mind Tom Holland but he is forgettable. Everyone else was pretty good.

Great to watch it on the big screen, feels a treat going to the cinema for a big blockbuster they’re few and far between nowadays.

I would give it 6/10 because the excellent scenes (Cyclops, the horse, Samantha Morton, the End) were outweighed by the utter self-indulgence of it. To paraphrase Peter from Family Guy "I do not care for that movie. It insists upon itself".
It was ridiculously loud - not exciting loud like Dunkirk or Saving Private Ryan's first scene, but annoying put-your-fingers-in-your-ears loud. Tom Holland was miscast, IMO. Zendayah had nothing to do and Elliott Page was just jarring, shoehorned in to show how much of a man she is.
I don't think I like Christopher Nolan, though. Perhaps after Oppenheimer I should have trusted my gut and not gone because it just pissed me off.

Incredible ensemble cast. I was a bit apprehensive going in that a 3 hour film would drag, but it was remarkable how engaging it was throughout - for me it was perfectly paced.

I disagree with the regarding 'mom' and 'dad'. The script was in contemporary (American) English, so I would have found it more jarring to having Tom Holland using 'mother' and 'father'. For me those sort of comments come down to snobbery and gatekeeping, I love the choices CN made in order to make this story accessible. And as one of the actors pointed out, given these characters are Greek it's no more accurate to say 'father' than it is 'dad'.

WRT to questions/comments on whether it would be suitable for those under 15, for me it wasn't so much the violence in the battle scenes - you don't actually see much bloodshed or up close gore, but some of the scenes feel very dark and disturbing. I found Circes especially troubling.

YES this! I'm not really sure the rationale... well I guess it's that the film is more about loss and PTSD and guilt, so Athene is more like almost his conscience? An imaginary friend?

I mean I didn't hate it, but in the poem she's more like his hype squad - she comes and peps him up when he needs it and helps him out. And of course she's the goddess of war and wisdom... I feel if they re-made the movie with more of that angle to the character, Zendaya equally would have been so good playing her that way.

To be fair the island / bad thing / run for the ships is basically the format of the poem.

Really enjoyed it!I loved the music.
