Has anyone seen The Odyssey film yet and what did you think

Anyone booked or been to see The Odyssey. I’m booked for Sunday. I don’t really care about the casting, as it’s a myth.
So I’m looking forward to it!

There is some strong violence and elements of horror (scenes of brutal, gory deaths, women being slaughtered in the Troy attack). I took my nearer-15-than-14yr old, but don't think I'd take her age 12.

Would he even get in?

It’s very gory and quite disturbing. Wouldn’t take a 12 year old. They are pretty strict these days as whether the parent is there is irrelevant. Our 19 year old was id checked when we went to see Gladiator together.

I went this morning and loved it. Really well put together and beautiful cinematography

I also think this was quite violent / gory - it was only really just OK for DS (15). The trailers for the films on beforehand were actually too much for him (and nearly for me).

I was unmoved. It felt shallow and emotionally flat to me, but then I'm generally unimpressed by Nolan's work, so it's no surprise.

Funnily enough, I'm much more excited about the upcoming animated version of Epic: The Musical. Even as it is now, with animatics on YouTube, it already has more heart and emotion than Nolan's film.

It was excellent and caught the spirit of the story.

A couple of gripes - Athena/Zendaya completely underused, and any blame for sleeping with Circe and Calypso taken away from Odysseus to leave him as faithful as possible.

But overall I loved it. Epic but human scale. Felt weird to come out into modern London.

I didn't see it an IMAX but I'm sure that would be even better.

Thanks. She’s almost 13 but i think it’s going to be a no. Her argument is that she’s read the book so why can’t she see the film but it’s very different seeing things in your own mind in comparison to what CN has seen and committed to film. She’s seen the trailer, as have I, and I thought it might be okay but am glad I asked now. There would be no problem getting her in, she’s 5’ 10” and looks at least 16!

I don’t know @soupmakerI didn’t think it was THAT bad. If she’s passionate about it I say take her. It’s quite violent but you can always leave if it’s too much and then she doesn’t feel hard done by. It won’t be the same on a small screen.

It is illegal for anyone under 15 to watch a 15 film in a UK cinema, @EineReiseDurchDieZeit .

If they are ID checked they won't get in anyway, and any staff member found to have allowed them in will lose their job.

Well I’m back. I thought was amazing. The 3 hours flew by. I’m pleased I ignored the ridiculous bitching about casting.
The sack of Troy was brutal.
I cried at the faithful dog. I am going to see again maybe next week.

But how do you ID check a 15 year old? That’s the whole point - they don’t have ID!

I agree that the fight scenes etc. were very violent / brutal, but I noticed that violence against women and children was more suggested / off-screen.

We need something on this scale focussing on Greek goddesses; it could be amazing.

We got free preview tickets in the ballot from Sky VIP , which was rather nice. They had no ads, no previews and NO PHONES! If only all movies could be shown like that!Was in our local IMAX (digital, not 70 Imax, but hey ho, was a big, loud screen anyhow)
Thought it was good, but as it had been sold as "epic" was mildly disappointing. Seemed quite shallow. Was expecting "Gladiator" vibes, but no. Casting was good, none of the so-called-woke stuff mattered one bit.

Samantha Morton was amazing as Circe - though I hid my eyes during some of her gruesome scenes. (Definitely not for kids).

I did not like the lightening, made me feel a bit wobbly. And did not like the sticks thumping on the floor, which you could feel in your chest, it was that loud, and was obviously meant to match a heartbeat.
Found the music sadly lacking. I know it was meant to be "ancient", not rousing, but meh...

But the story, the action, the presentation was great. I'm sure it will win some awards. Not sure it will be "remembered".

I quite liked the guardian review’s part about Athena:

Zendaya’s Athena – one of the really top gods – has almost nothing to do here but vaguely shadow Odysseus, Scottish Widows-style in a headscarf, softly nodding, sometimes doing a sad head-shake, like the teacher who tells you they’re not angry, just disappointed.

I ws intending going to see it as some of if was filmed where I live but I don't think I can concentrate for 3 hours and I probably wouldn't understand what it was about.

Absolutely brilliant. Such a clever screenplay. Themes and ideas to the fore, but never at the expense of pacy, exciting cinema. Incredible ensemble, all at the top of their game.

Anne Hatherway gave a rather bland performance and the character wasn’t developed in any way. Generally loud for no good reason. It kept me entertained for 3 hours so not too bad.

Ok I’m completely ignorant of The Odyssey 🙈 if I were to go to see the film, do I need to educate myself a bit first?

The film stands alone as an action/adventure and the prologue/intro is soooo long and repetitive you don't need to concentrate to understand what's going on.

Not really... bloke uses intellect to overcome obstacles on a long journey home to his wife and son, suffering survivors guilt.

Lots of action... Once it gets going.

Absolutely stunning film, on par with gladiator for me.

I think a basic understanding of the Trojan War and the epic narrative of The Odyssey is helpful. I'm sure it can be enjoyed without, but I felt like it wouldn't have been totally appreciated 'blind'.

I really enjoyed it too. I bought the book a while ago, and although I'm familiar with the story having done classics at school, I haven't read the book in its entirety. I guess I'll catch up with it now!

I thought Matt Damon was excellent, as was John Leguizamo and Anne Hathaway. Trying to think what else I have seen Robert Pattinson in apart from Harry Potter, as I never watched Twilight, but he was excellent as the villainous Antinuous. Zendaya's role was very sad.

Several hours of my life that I will never get back. Drivel. The monks and dad thing marred and as for Ellen Page. Really unconvincing.
