Wonka film, disappointing!

Just been to see the new Wonka film. Interested in others views if anyone's seen it yet? I know it only came out today!

I was really disappointed with it. Songs were dreadful, Timothy Chalamet can't sing, the little girl was annoying. Hugh Grant was great but not in it enough.
Massive plot holes and stupid storyline.
I expected more cos I loved Mary Poppins returns and both Paddington films and think it's same director?

It’s odd, I haven’t been able to find any blind hatred for this film except on MN 😄

IdaPolly · 31/12/2023 19:51

Absolutely loved it. Brilliant!

I wasn't keen. There wasn't much of a story and I didn't like the couple who owned the laundromat. The man was creepy.

I didn't notice any sexual remarks.

We've been to see it twice! Fabulous film. We all really enjoyed it. I went home and bought the songs.

I think they’re supposed to be unlikeable baddies…

I took my teenagers to see it just before Christmas and we all loved it. Magical, fun and well cast.

Beetlebumz · 01/01/2024 14:38

Just watched it I thought it was absolutely brilliant!! Did we watch different films op? So funny and joyful. My dh and son felt the same

FionnulaTheCooler · 02/01/2024 18:25

We watched it today and enjoyed it. Timothee was great as Wonka, I could believe him as a young version of the Gene Wilder one. I agree with all the previous posters who had said that Matt Lucas was appalling in it, I normally avoid anything he's in, his "acting" is cringeworthy.

cheeseisthebest · 02/01/2024 18:53

I'm really glad people enjoyed it! Like I said I think my expectations were far too high!

My friend, who sees a lot of films, thinks it may have been her film of the year

Yes! Matt Lucas was awful!

Just seen it and adored it. Left me with a warm happy glow. The music was fabulous.
My main irks were the noodle character having an american accent and being generally annoying and saccharine. Would have been nicer with an English accent. Charlie in the Tim Burton one was lovely. She just seemed like an Annie knock off. Notice most of the bad guys had English accents and most of the goodies had American ones.
But apart from that it was fab.

Saw it last night and enjoyed it. I must have spent a third of the film clasping my hands and smiling, old Scrooge that I am!
But… not full marks.

The actors were a strange mixture of trying too hard and not trying enough.
The old hands (Rowan A, Olivia C, Jim C and especially Hugh G) were just going through the motions, barely speaking their lines and indicating this was beneath them. Olivia Coleman has previously played the Innkeeper’s Wife in Les Misérables, and it showed.
The lesser known actors went above and beyond and, IMO, charming Timothée received a lot of help from Autotune!

Technically, a great job. Lovely backdrops and meaningful sets, spot-on costumes and great CG effects. Fun dialogue, child friendly and no sexual innuendo picked up by me, even with the fan dance. The songs were catchy, as you would expect from a musical, but basing a whole score on a sottovoce line in a previous Wonka movie “Come with me… and you’ll see…” isn’t going to cut it.

I think it’s set to be a classic, one we’ll see on Christmas TV for many years.

Gotmygladragson · 06/01/2024 05:59

Absolutely loved it!! Thought Chalamet was superb - although I agree with what pps have said about the little girl.

It was just what a movie that comes out at Christmas should be like. I haven’t read the full thread so don’t know if this has been mentioned but I don’t think anyone could have played the Ooompa Loompa part better than Hugh!

TurquoiseDress · 09/01/2024 10:10

Went to see it just before Christmas with my primary school aged DC- they loved it and so did I!

Great feel good movie during the Christmas build up

Never seen TC in anything before, he's very easy on eye isn't he?! Grin

We loved Hugh Grant and the Oompa Loompa song...that went round and round the house for a few days!

Overall, fab movie to spend a few hours watching Smile

peachescariad · 09/01/2024 10:16

Probably one of the worst films I've ever seen.....insipid, shallow songs, awful mix of American and English voices....it was just cringe seeing well known actors trying to be amusing...and failing.
The Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp films are in my top 10, but this was shocking!

Firstshoes · 09/01/2024 10:42

Myself and my very young at heart 20 year old dd went to see it just before Christmas. We love the original Wonka film and had high hopes due to the amazing cast. It is the first film I have ever walked out of before the end. So boring and unfunny. It seems it really is a marmite film!

SaturdayGiraffe · 09/01/2024 10:58

Did anyone who hates this film also hate the Mary Poppins with Emily Blunt?
I wonder if it’s the comparison with beloved childhood classics that’s the issue.

I loved both and thought they complemented the originals rather well, if that's any help.

Me and my 14 year old dd went to see Wonka before Xmas and we absolutely loved it 👍

I didn't like the Mary Poppins remake

I loved Wonka and feel it will be regarded as a classic in years to come

No, that isn’t the issue. Wonka had no charm or magic, the songs were a bit shit, and it was overlong. In general, it was a poor film.

Isn't it strange how two people can see the same film and come out with such opposing views? I thought it had wonderful charm and magic, liked the songs, thought the length was okay and that it was a great film - as, it seems, do the majority here but not the OP! 😁

Yeah, these things are all subjective, aren’t they.
