Wonka film, disappointing!

Just been to see the new Wonka film. Interested in others views if anyone's seen it yet? I know it only came out today!

I was really disappointed with it. Songs were dreadful, Timothy Chalamet can't sing, the little girl was annoying. Hugh Grant was great but not in it enough.
Massive plot holes and stupid storyline.
I expected more cos I loved Mary Poppins returns and both Paddington films and think it's same director?

If they ever do a full on remake tons of people online are calling for Jeremy Allen Whyte from the Bear to play Gene Wilder as they look so similar! Tons of mock ups on instagram.

I took my son yesterday - both of us tired and grotty. We went with no expectations and we loved it. Just suspend reality for 2 hours. Wasn’t massively long. Son loved it too.

For fans of Roald Dahl film adaptations, I saw the Wes Anderson “Henry Sugar” film on Netflix and loved it. Puppet theatre style sets and Ralph Fiennes as RD, writing in his garden shed.
There’s another one with Orlando Bloom that I haven’t seen.

Its got a similar feel to Paddington. You might love it cos I've lowered your expectations!

I think it’s the same team that made Paddington so not surprised it has a similar feel. I think Paddington 2 was an eye opener for Hugh Grant and he clearly had so much fun in the role so I am looking forward to seeing him in this.

Not enough Hugh Grant in Wonka and the writing isn't as good as Paddington.

@cheeseisthebest that is a shame.

lap90 · 10/12/2023 13:08

Took me a while to warm up to it but didn't know whether it was because i was a bit late. I quite enjoyed it. Thought it was a fun film.

I am apprehensive to watch it anyway cos when I look at Timothy chalamet I don't see a fully grown man, I see a 14 year old boy, even though he is a fully grown man!

Is it just me

no definitely not just you. weird thing is he looks like my dh as a teenager so it makes me feel abit weird and wrong

QueSyrahSyrah · 10/12/2023 16:35

Just got back from the cinema now and I absolutely LOVED it.

DH and I had been discussing beforehand (based on the new Ghostbusters trailer) how these days everything seems to have to go too far with drama and fright, and there aren't many really fun family films, like Paddington, made.

Wonka is (IMO) a real fun magical family film. Certainly less frightening and problematic than the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Bigminnie1 · 10/12/2023 17:07

I absolutely loved it! Timothee Chalomet was perfect for a young Wonka. Hugh Grant was brilliant and so was everyone else. I was with a lot of people and we all loved it. It also got a round of applause at the end from everyone in the cinema.

No, he hated doing it and only did the film for the dough:

Eh? If you read the article he’s just saying he hated wearing the suit for CGI. There are tons of lovely interviews all over instagram with him and TC, saying how much they loved making the film. HG does have a laugh at himself doing absurd roles and being in the “freak show stage of (his) career” but it’s all in good jest.

TheMarzipanDildo · 10/12/2023 18:56

I’ve enjoyed the songs I’ve heard.
I’m a Neil Hannon mega-fan though so I was predisposed to like them!

cheeseisthebest · 10/12/2023 19:02

I love Neil Hannon, loved the Divine Comedy.

Oh nooo, I hope not, we've booked to see as family treat between Xmas and New year based on trailer looking great. 😬
Hated the Depp wonka film, so much! If it's as bad as that it'll be rather disappointing!

Isn't TC doing a biopic playing Bob Dylan (or have i dreamt that?), so you'd hope he can sing!

lol why, Bob Dylan can't really sing by traditional standards, so kind of fits the bill.

I never said he enjoyed Wonka, I was clearly saying he had fun in Paddington 2.

floofbag · 10/12/2023 20:10

I liked it , I thought Timothy was enchanting and wonka isn't a singer so it's all good 😊..

WillowTit · 10/12/2023 20:27

i saw a littlest bit of this thread before which lowered my expectations suitably!
great not to go with huge expectations,
visually very appealing.
and tunes catchy.
no complaints whatsoever

Ihatemondays1962 · 10/12/2023 20:37
