Wonka film, disappointing!

Just been to see the new Wonka film. Interested in others views if anyone's seen it yet? I know it only came out today!

I was really disappointed with it. Songs were dreadful, Timothy Chalamet can't sing, the little girl was annoying. Hugh Grant was great but not in it enough.
Massive plot holes and stupid storyline.
I expected more cos I loved Mary Poppins returns and both Paddington films and think it's same director?

Loved it here too. Thought Timothee was excellent in it. A fun family movie 🍿

I've often wondered why no-one has made a film of 'The Great Glass Elevator'.

Too hard to figure out the Vicious Knids? Plus the whole idea of Grandma Josephine being a minus is a bit dark (but then, I suppose a fair amount of Dahl is).

I'd definitely watch it if it ever happened!

I don't think Timothy Chalamet is a big enough star to pull it off

What?! Surely Timothee Chalamet is one of the most famous actors in the world right now?

Genuinely never heard the name before this thread. Will google, but i think this might be a little strong.

Nowadays, with CGI, the Vermicious Knids would be a piece of cake and the 'Wonka Vite' sequence all comes right in the end. I'd love to see it made into a film ... if any film producers are on Mumsnet, please take note!

We saw it yesterday and I loved it. I thought the lead was great, loved the little girl. It was magical and whimsical. Looked amazing , overall I highly recommend. It isn’t believable of course but that was ok with me.

Crikey 😮😮😮

JuliaJoJelly · 09/12/2023 23:24

Really? I loved it!

Slitheringheights · 09/12/2023 23:53

I thought it was great!

covetingthepreciousthings · 09/12/2023 23:54

Would it be ok for a 7 year old to sit through? Or too long?

cheeseisthebest · 08/12/2023 23:11

He was quite good, apart from the singing.
I think it also annoyed me that it feels a very British film, loads of British actors but Wonka and the girl in it (Noodle) are American. Why couldn't they have cast British actors for those parts?

Isn't he French?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 10/12/2023 01:03

Sorry just read American-French

ImTheGoat · 10/12/2023 07:08

DH and I really enjoyed it. Lighthearted fun and High Grant was hilarious. The music wasn't all that (wasn't bad either) but the visuals were great and it was obviously well acted. I guess if you go in with massively high expectations you could be disappointed but we felt it was an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.

Oh nooo, I hope not, we've booked to see as family treat between Xmas and New year based on trailer looking great. 😬
Hated the Depp wonka film, so much! If it's as bad as that it'll be rather disappointing!

Isn't TC doing a biopic playing Bob Dylan (or have i dreamt that?), so you'd hope he can sing!

Well, Dylan hasn't exactly got a great voice so it won't really matter.

Lovethatforyouhun · 10/12/2023 07:10

Looks shite.
I will stay in the 70s with Gene.

Getoutgetout · 10/12/2023 07:43

Would a 4 and 6 year old be too young? Someone mentioned dead parents??

Startoftheyear2023 · 10/12/2023 07:52

Loved it! Funny and cute. Suspend disbelief and go. Exactly the same humour and style to the Paddington films.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 08/12/2023 23:06

I am apprehensive to watch it anyway cos when I look at Timothy chalamet I don't see a fully grown man, I see a 14 year old boy, even though he is a fully grown man!

Is it just me

Certainly isn’t just you!

Anyfeckinusername · 10/12/2023 08:06

Yes OP! We saw it yesterday, took a few 10year olds for a birthday. I myself was so excited - but it just fell flat, really flat. Definitely a disappointment. It was style over substance. The kids loved it though.

It's one of those "brilliant trailer, shame about the movie" ones.

Iwanttheraintostop · 10/12/2023 08:55

I was a bit disappointed by it. I think my expectations were too high though as I loved Paddington but I found Wonka too long and nowhere near as entertaining.

Took 2 10yr olds - one loved it and the other found it a bit cheesy. No pleasing everyone 🤣

cheeseisthebest · 10/12/2023 09:22

Yeh I had very high expectations! We had free tickets from tesco and it said free drinks, snacks and popcorn. These were also disappointing!

We’re going to see this today - big fans of Paddington, Neil Hannon and like Timothee Chalamet. Have high hopes but this thread is worrying me!

MrsMitford3 · 10/12/2023 10:49

I agree about Timothee Chalamet being 14 years and I find him a bit meh and then I saw a tiktok of him speaking French and the tiktok said suddenly he makes more sense and he really did!!!!

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 10/12/2023 10:53

I want to see it purely for TC.

Because I've lowered your expectations you will probably love it!

We all absolutely love TC in our house, so plenty of fan girling going on 😆 we’ve loved following all the PR stuff on Instagram- amazing chocolate sculptures of the factory and of Willy himself, interviews with TC and the cast, seeing all the kids around the world get so excited. Yeah it’s one huge PR machine but it’s been fun! I think if you can let go of your expectations a little and just enjoy it for what it is - a children’s film- it’s great. It’s never going to be Gene Wilder and the dark side that RD encapsulated but it doesn’t mean it’s not good - it’s not a remake. Personally I think the Depp version of Willy Wonka is the one that is the worst one. So over stylised and doesn’t capture the magic and wonder of it all. TC has a charm and quirkiness about him which is magical, just like GW.
