Wonka film, disappointing!

Just been to see the new Wonka film. Interested in others views if anyone's seen it yet? I know it only came out today!

I was really disappointed with it. Songs were dreadful, Timothy Chalamet can't sing, the little girl was annoying. Hugh Grant was great but not in it enough.
Massive plot holes and stupid storyline.
I expected more cos I loved Mary Poppins returns and both Paddington films and think it's same director?

I had high hopes. Thought it could have potential. As a movie critic it was not good at all. Poorly written and directed. And they expect us to believe that that same Willy will become the original Wonka. Not buying it.

ExpensiveDecorations · 14/12/2023 13:27

He's exactly how I imagine the young Wonka to be from reading the book. Never seen the other films though.

KohlaParasaurus · 15/12/2023 21:20

I loved it! I particularly enjoyed Hugh Grant playing himself as an Oompa-Loompa. I'm not whistling the songs yet, but the songs in Mary Poppins Returns didn't stick in my head until I'd seen it a couple of times.

Britpopbaby · 16/12/2023 20:19

I thought it was charming. I went in needing to be cheered up and got what I needed. Huge Grant was a highlight!

Just got back from seeing it and boy oh boy was this underwhelming. The whole overlong thing felt soulless. TC is such a bland actor and so completely wrong for Wonka. The new songs, just like in Mary Poppins Returns, were a bit shit - instantly forgettable. And there were too many of them. Was there even a story going on other than Wonka wants to open a shop and Johnson from Peep Show and his cronies want to stop it?

Predictably, Hugh Grant stole the show and it was good to see Olivia Colman in an atypical part for a change, but I couldn’t sit through this again.

@Millysaurus I took my 4 and 10 year olds today and they both liked it. The 4 year old loves the cinema though so if your little one is similar I'd guess they would be old

Newuser75 · 18/12/2023 21:03

@Millysaurus ok, not old 🙈

Jazz232 · 18/12/2023 21:12

I also found the movie boring and fell asleep during it. I saw the hunger games and napoleon and that didn’t happen. Those movies were good. I think people just love Timothee, and I do love him and wanted to like this movie. So I am disappointed. The only great thing about this movie was Hugh Grant. He’s hilarious and should do on stage comedy.

FuckYouEzekiel · 18/12/2023 21:14

We loved it.

Agreed Timothee was boring in this movie I fell asleep. The only great think was Hugh Grant he is hilarious and should do on stage comedy. If they didn’t cast Hugh it would’ve been a total flop

I loved it!
Hugh Grant stole the show.
It was a brilliant film to watch pre-Christmas.

DH, DD (9), DS (5) & I saw it on Saturday & all loved it. A lovely family film.

Also didn't Gene Wilder have an American accent in the original film? If so, TC having one in this is fine.

I'm interested to know what happens to the idealistic Wonka to take him from this to the older jaded version in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory? Sequel perhaps?

I think his accent changed throughout so as not to give away the location of the factory and Charlie's town, which were one and the same. This is why no currency is mentioned, accents changed among the community and there are no signposts or car plates to give it away.

Gosh we have just been as a family and we thought it was wonderful. DSs are 17 and 19 but everyone loved it. Beautiful production, great writing from Simon Farnaby (ghosts and horrible histories) and a superb cast. It’s a perfect family film imo for any age.

Cozyathome · 19/12/2023 22:14

Ah no I didn't think so at all. I really enjoyed it. Its nothing to do with the original really other than he makes chocolate. I loved it. I think others are just bring cynical

FinallyFinalGirl · 19/12/2023 22:36

No one passed on my chips but I can recognise AI when I see it.

Very poor AI. Very poor indeed.🙄

fullmoonmystery · 19/12/2023 23:01

Myself and my two children 6 and 10 absolutely loved it! There were so many references to Gene Wilder 70s version it was very nostalgic! And always a yes to anything Matt from Horrible Histories is in 😬

user701 · 19/12/2023 23:01

Wtf are you talking about? You think I’m a bot? I can assure you I’m not. I’m a 50 year old menopausal lawyer who likes a musical and a movie with a good cast. I have memories of watching the gene wilder movie when I was about 3 sitting on the living room floor whilst my mum did the ironing in about 1977.

I think your botdar is a bit off I’m afraid

Lincslady53 · 20/12/2023 21:05

We saw it this afternoon. Timothee Chalamet has been working on playing Bob Dylan in a film about his early life, up to 1965, since before Covid. I noticed a few shots where the time he has spent playing Dylan came through, only in the odd expression. In the song when he opened the shop, he threw some boiled sweets in the air, and the song lyric was 'A hard rains gonna fall'! I enjoyed spotting half the cast if Ghosts and other well known actors. I enjoyed it. Pretty harmless pleasant way of spending a cold, wet afternoon.

Well yes it’s a simple story but then so are so many other well loved children’s films if you put it like that …! Mary Poppins - magic nanny takes children on days out, Paddington - marmalade loving bear comes to live with family, Harry Potter - wizard goes to school… I could go on. 😆🤷‍♀️
