Wonka film, disappointing!

Just been to see the new Wonka film. Interested in others views if anyone's seen it yet? I know it only came out today!

I was really disappointed with it. Songs were dreadful, Timothy Chalamet can't sing, the little girl was annoying. Hugh Grant was great but not in it enough.
Massive plot holes and stupid storyline.
I expected more cos I loved Mary Poppins returns and both Paddington films and think it's same director?

I glimpsed Matt from Horrible Histories in the trailer and if it’s the Paddington writing team there should be Simon, too.
Hugh Grant being pompous and Harry Potter-style special effects?
That’s enough for me to put it on my holiday activities list!

Yes Alison, Julian and Thomas from ghosts are all in it! Plus Carson from downtown and lots of other recognisable faces.

Excellent. Such a talented crew. If you’ve not seen it, thoroughly recommend Bill. Much underrated film. Love Matt and “King Philip the second of Spain, swoon” 😁

I've often wondered why no-one has made a film of 'The Great Glass Elevator'.

Yup, a young children's film like Paddington which I love.
I adore kids films, expected this to be so much better.

“Nobody bonks me with a bagwet “. And Hugh Grant’s pink sequinned performance. Perfection!

It’s a really bad children’s film, the sort of thing an adult who wasn’t really interested in children might come up with.

There were a lot of strange gaps in it- gaps in the plot but also characters we were supposed to root for but barely saw, such as the other prisoners. I suspect that the best parts of the film, all the heart and character, ended up on the cutting room floor and we just got a lot of self-conscious schmaltz and CGI.

WellWellSaidTheRockingChair · 09/12/2023 19:58

I really liked it

ionlywantto · 09/12/2023 20:12

Loved it!!

franglais123 · 09/12/2023 20:12

I liked it! I was charmed by it and liked TC’s voice.

TummyTuckNameChange · 09/12/2023 20:15

shame, I might try it anyway as I saw it's written by simon farnaby who I love

JaniceBattersby · 09/12/2023 20:15

I thought it was ok but missing a big musical banger to bring it all together.

It all looked very gorgeous but my seven year old
found it much too dark with all the dead parents.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 09/12/2023 20:17

We loved it!

Floogal · 09/12/2023 20:37

Is grandpa Joe still a conniving lazy git in this one?

Are Charlie and his family even in this film, given it's about the young Wonka as he was growing up? (Rather than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.)

franglais123 · 09/12/2023 21:07

No it’s way before the Charlie era.

Mindymomo · 09/12/2023 21:22

I went yesterday with my adult son, we loved it, tried so hard not to laugh out loud at Hugh Grant.

PictureFrameWindow · 09/12/2023 21:25

Just to report back that we liked it a lot. The songs are just okay, I think they could have been better. It was weird seeing Chalamet as Wonka since I last watched him in Dune, but I found him very charming and a good casting in the end.

EezyOozy · 09/12/2023 21:54

Are a 4.5 and just-6 year old likely to enjoy it or might they get bored? Considering this and Wish for tmrw …

Pinkandgreentrousers · 09/12/2023 21:57

I really enjoyed it

AristotlesWife · 09/12/2023 21:59

I don't think Timothy Chalamet is a big enough star to pull it off

What?! Surely Timothee Chalamet is one of the most famous actors in the world right now?

Bippertyboppertyboob · 09/12/2023 22:06

We loved it! Laughed out loud a few times too.
