It was shit. Far far too long. Lots of extra songs that were really unnecessary. Eric was shit and wooden. the animals just looked weird, especially Sebastian. Halle Berry and Melissa McCarthy were both good, but I've never felt any of the live action films were as good as the animations. the magic isn't the same.

Completely agree.

loverrr · 27/05/2023 08:42

Oh thats a shame, I was looking forward to it! What rating is it do you know, is it suitable for young kids?

AutisticLegoLover · 27/05/2023 08:42

Dd was a massive fan when she was 4 and it's one of my favourite Disney animations but we've no interest in seeing this film. Any changes to characters upsets Dd because she's autistic. Her favourite book adaptation freaked her out because they changed the main characters. The reviews for the little mermaid haven't been great so this one will be given a miss. Dd didn't like the Mulan remake either but we enjoyed Cinderella. Some things shouldn't be messed with. Make a new film with a new story instead of remaking old favourites.

TheMooney · 27/05/2023 08:44

I think the live action remakes are mostly about extending the intellectual property ownership.

The little mermaid was always a problematic storyline anyway.

SaturdayGiraffe · 27/05/2023 08:45

I remember reading they have to remake them for copyright reasons.

Sarahsupasaint · 27/05/2023 20:16

I loved it! I was 8 when the original came out, it has always been my favourite and thought it was lovely to watch a modern version and loved Halle as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy was a fabulously burlesque Ursula.

I also felt was too long and I'll be skipping the extra songs next time I watch, which I expect will be quite a bit when it reaches Disney +. Mum and I took my two year old who's currently obsessed with the new Peter Pan and she sat through the movie loving it. About 20 min til the end she got bored.
I would definitely not agree that it's shit, it's a million times better than Peter Pan which was shit.

PinkButtercups · 27/05/2023 20:22

I thought it was quite good. Except the people in the cinema with us knew the dog and kept shouting out the dogs name every time it appeared on the screen.

LuciferRising · 27/05/2023 20:25

I enjoyed it but felt it was too long too.

safetyfreak · 27/05/2023 20:51

I enjoyed it!

The Eric actor is very handsome 😉

Sometimeswinning · 27/05/2023 20:55

Eric was great! Sebastian and scuttle were the stars! Halle Berry didn't quite capture Ariel in my mind. But I really enjoyed the film. Triton was a bit to Aquaman as mentioned above.

MeThinksTime · 27/05/2023 20:56

How long is it?

occa · 27/05/2023 20:57

Halle Bailey

Minniemouse85 · 27/05/2023 20:59

We saw it this morning and we loved it. It was a little long for my 5 year old though and she got very restless at the end.

Hobbes8 · 27/05/2023 21:03

I really liked the live action versions of Aladdin and Dumbo, but nobody else seemed to. Lion King and Jungle Book were meh. Cinderella and B&B were fine.

ecuse · 27/05/2023 21:06

We're just back from seeing it and I loved it!

Halle Bailey

Yes Halle Bailey. It pisses me off so much that people seem to think that there is only one black actress in the world. Both women are beautiful but they look completely different and Halle berry is now well into her 50s.

I loved it too. Prince Eric was wooden but handsome, Halle acted him off the screen. The 'under the sea' song was amazing. Even better than the Disney version.

MaverickSnoopy · 28/05/2023 06:44

Well that answers my question about whether my restless 4yo will manage it. I think I'll just take the older ones who are desperate to see it. I'm not keen on remakes so not expecting great things particularly from comments here.

It's worth it for the songs, Sebastian and Scuttle. Plus Eric and Ariel have a lovely bit of chemistry. 4 year old would definitely find it difficult to sit through.

Niftythrifter · 28/05/2023 16:00

My favourite live action Disney film ( have only seen three including this one). The leads were fab and the d film preserved the charm of the original. TLM always has had a special place in my heart and this doesn’t change that. I thought that they got the casting spot on.

It wasn't Halle Berry!

Hbh17 · 28/05/2023 16:23

I remember watching the cartoon version with my niece many years ago, and I was shocked at the awful messages it was offering for little girls. It was terribly sexist, so I'm surprised it has been remade at all, tbh.

Sometimeswinning · 28/05/2023 17:38

Modaboutyou · 28/05/2023 16:19

It wasn't Halle Berry!

Someone has already pointed it out. But thankyou again. The names are similar. I honestly didn't think to myself that they were the same person so calm down.

pumpkintits · 28/05/2023 18:40

I loved it, thought Halle Bailey was great but Melissa Mccarthy was amazing as Ursula.

My DD told me off for singing along 😳

I don't think anyone believes they are the same person 🙄 the names are very similar is all.
