It was shit. Far far too long. Lots of extra songs that were really unnecessary. Eric was shit and wooden. the animals just looked weird, especially Sebastian. Halle Berry and Melissa McCarthy were both good, but I've never felt any of the live action films were as good as the animations. the magic isn't the same.

The animation of the 1989 film is no more advanced than the earlier Disney films like Snow White, sleeping Beauty

Amazing how technology has progressed in under 35 years

Untrusting · 05/06/2023 09:55

Saw it yesterday with 8 year old dd and we both absolutely loved it.

The original was one of my favourites and I think they've redone this one so well. Halle Baileys voice is just phenomenal.

The only criticism is that it was slightly too long but can't actually think what I'd cut out - possibly Eric's song I wasn't a massive fan off that number!

Teabab · 05/06/2023 09:58

I'm not a fan of any of the live remakes, although I have watched them all just in case! I thought the lead was fab, amazing voice and a really great actress, the rest fell flat for me though. There are so many incredible stories out there and creative people, it's a shame there aren't fresh and new films invested in rather than edits on classics. I know lots disagree though.

Tinktravels · 07/06/2023 14:50

I really liked it. There's been some good and some bad remakes but TLM was up there with Cinderella and Aladdin for me.

toomanyleggings · 08/06/2023 22:54

I loved it. Saw it today with my 9 year old. I thought it was better than the other live action remakes. It didn’t seem to have as big a budget as say Aladdin did but it didn’t need it. There was only maybe 2 extra songs but I actually enjoyed them particularly Scuttle’s

snoozingbaby1476 · 09/06/2023 08:40

Okay I'm going to see it today. Will report back.....

PuppyMonkey · 09/06/2023 08:46

I bloody love the Beauty and the Beast live action version tbh.

BrilliantandSmiley · 09/06/2023 12:59

I wonder if they'll do a Pocahontas live action version next.

snoozingbaby1476 · 09/06/2023 14:03

I really enjoyed it.
I did miss the kitchen scene as I love that song. Also felt that Sebastian lacked personality which is totally different from how he is in the animation film. Overall thought it was brilliant though.

LuciferRising · 09/06/2023 14:38

I don't know how I feel about Javier Bardem as Triton... I am somewhere between love and not sure.

I rather fancied King Triton after watching it.

Yep 😂

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 11/06/2023 16:31

Loved Halle Bailey and most the visuals..looked really pretty in some places then really dark in others..know realistic and whatever but it just seemed a bit too dark!

The songs were fun. Eric was a bit mehhh. Def one of my favourite of the remakes. Helped the actress could sing!

SleepingStandingUp · 20/06/2023 16:35

Eric was hot. But when he was singing on the coast after being told off by Mom then suddenly was singing on a boat... Odd.
And Ariel hiding behind the rock before she did the jump was crabbing along it creepily.
Triton was a bit too thin at the waist.
How do mermaids/men have sex? I worry that would have needed a big sit down chat with Ariel. Like so honey, human men have.....
Was Eric a stranded baby on the original? Seemed a random change otherwise that needs exploring in the movie "Eric"

Thought it was quite dark for little ones, I wouldn't have taken my 4/5 yo.
Generally really liked it tho

Yes Halle Bailey. It pisses me off so much that people seem to think that there is only one black actress in the world. Both women are beautiful but they look completely different and Halle berry is now well into her 50s.

Isnt it more that the name is very similar?

shadowchancesassy · 20/06/2023 16:42

Loved it. Been to see it twice and cried both times. It's beautiful.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/06/2023 16:43

Well yes otherwise pp is suggesting there's only two. No one thinks Ariel is Lashana Lynch. It's just name confusion. It's like all the guys called Chris who do superhero movies. Chris Evans and Pratt and I think there's another one.

QueSyrahSyrah · 20/06/2023 19:57

@SleepingStandingUp Pine. Hemsworth. Pratt. Evans. Entirely interchangeable in my mind the lot of them.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/06/2023 23:43

Not Hemsworth. Never interchangeable. Not even with the other Hemsworth. He is mine tho so you don't need to pick who's whom. Just leave me alone with my Thor and his hammer.

Hbh17 · 28/05/2023 16:23

I remember watching the cartoon version with my niece many years ago, and I was shocked at the awful messages it was offering for little girls. It was terribly sexist, so I'm surprised it has been remade at all, tbh.

Agreed

Luke Evans was brilliant in this. If I was Belle I so would have.

Wow. It certainly wasnt shit.

The extra songs are usually because of various things to do with copyright and original soundtrack. 3 original songs, 1 of which gave Ariel an extra song. Several were cut out of the original film.

Eric had a song because it gave more of his backstory.

I agree slightly about the cgi but it certainly wasnt shit.

I thought the finale was stunning. The story was magical in a way the original wsnt (hundreds of plot holes).

If you didnt enjoy a film thats fine but that doesnt make it shit.

Bizarre post but il try.

They gave eric an original song because of the reasons @Hbh17 talked about - to give him a character other than the whole Ariel ran off with a man she doesnt know.

He was abandoned in a shipwreck - hence the story of the fact he doesnt hate the sea just because it killed his parents in the same way Ariel doesnt because they killed her mum.

Nothing to say about the , erm, waist and sex comments

We took my 5 year old god daughter. Only dark part was Ursula growing and she was fine

I actually thought it was less dark than the original. Melissa was funny, not evil. The og vanessa terrified me.

WildUnchartedWaters · 02/08/2023 01:10

Changerazelea · 01/06/2023 09:40

Just cannot bring myself to see it. First film I ever saw in a cinema and when I saw the trailor and what they have done to Flouder I was OUT

Ursula is my favourite disney character and when I saw the trailer I too was out.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.

stayathomer · 08/09/2023 20:46

jumped between enjoying it loads and critiquing it- loved Ursula so so much and loved Ariel’s singing but at times I found that yes Ariel and Eric could have shown more. But really enjoyable. As for remakes, did people not love the jungle book? I thought that was done so well!

I preferred the Jungle Book to The Lion King remake, Christopher Walken was brilliant in it, but definitely think The Little Mermaid has been the better one out of them all so far.
