It was shit. Far far too long. Lots of extra songs that were really unnecessary. Eric was shit and wooden. the animals just looked weird, especially Sebastian. Halle Berry and Melissa McCarthy were both good, but I've never felt any of the live action films were as good as the animations. the magic isn't the same.

I was so disappointed in it. For the first time ever I was seriously thinking about leaving the film as the first hour was so boring but DD was enjoying it. I agree Sebastian and scuttle saved it

TeamSpike · 28/05/2023 19:00

I thought it was really good. The songs were brilliant (apart from Eric's solo🤦‍♀️) loved all the actors but the stand out was Melissa Mccarthy. She was brilliant and loved her song. Although they did make her a bit too scary looking at the end. Dd(7) said she thought that was too scary. Loved scuttle and loved it being the same voice as the dragon from Maya and the last dragon. Really funny

I was suppose to Google this! Of course that was scuttle! You are wrong about Eric's song though. I enjoyed that.

Haha I couldn't place it then Dd said "did you know that's Sisu from Maya" 😂

I’m so proud of Halle Bailey, and hopefully the last 4 years of defending her casting is now over. She was excellent. Filming in lockdown was tough, my heart really went out to her.

Can I ask, do you all think the film ok for a 6yo? Debating going this week but don't know if it might be a tad too long, or a bit scary in places with Ursula?

My 7 year old was really fidgety and covered her eyes a few times. Ursula is pretty dark.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 29/05/2023 21:33

Have been today, thought it was a bit dark as in lighting and the story line … think it might scare little children !

JamSandle · 29/05/2023 21:43

The Disney remakes have all been awful. Just make me appreciate the originals more.

ActualMermaid · 29/05/2023 22:29

I took my almost 5 year old yesterday and we loved it! She covered her eyes a little bit at the end but she hasn't come out traumatised. Definitely such a fun movie with lots of funny bits. The new Eric is a bit stiff but nice to look at, and I loved the rest of the cast. I thought they all did a great job.

FettleOfKish · 30/05/2023 22:03

Went today (invited, not necessarily my choice otherwise). I enjoyed it much more than I expected to. Surprised at only 3 new songs after the OP's warning of 'lots'. I could have lived without the first two to be honest but Skuttle & Sebastian's duet was hilarious.

I liked that Ariel was a bit more independent Woman who knew what she wanted and fought for it, than her cartoon predecessor's naivety and apparent shortage of brain. Or maybe I'm just remembering the cartoon incorrectly.

Kids these days must be tougher than me, as I thought there was considerably more 'quite serious peril' than the 'mild peril' advised at the beginning Grin

Niftythrifter · 30/05/2023 22:08

I really thought the lead actress was having fun in her role and the enthusiasm and joy was just evident in her performance. I liked the fact that the original actor who voiced Ariel had a cameo in the film ( fork hair combing scene on the island).

LilacSorbet · 31/05/2023 15:57

WHERE WAS THE POISSON SONG?!!?!?!

Apart from that, I really liked it Grin

Mischance · 31/05/2023 16:01

My DD was the Little Mermaid - she was totally obsessed with it for many years and lived and breathed mermaids. I took her DD (my GD) this week to see the new version and she loved every moment of it - she was entranced - it was a delight to be with her. I enjoyed it too, and was impressed by the technology.

Mischance · 31/05/2023 16:01

Where indeed was the poisson song!!??

BrilliantandSmiley · 31/05/2023 16:51

I'm really torn about whether to go and watch this now!

defi · 31/05/2023 16:52

I'll wait till it comes on Disney plus. I wish they would stop with the remakes

BrilliantandSmiley · 31/05/2023 17:29

I've just booked tickets!

PollyThePixie · 31/05/2023 17:43

I would like to take my granddaughter to see this but is it true there are rude remarks about the names Katherine and Diana?

adularia · 31/05/2023 17:59

We loved it.

Eric was trying to guess Ariel's name and guessed those two names, she pulled a bit of a face and shook her head. I wouldn't have said it was particularly rude but then those aren't my names 🤷‍♀️

MollyRover · 31/05/2023 18:21

I liked it! Halle Bailey I find a bit too musical theater but Daveed Diggs I loved as Sebastian- he seemed to really enjoy it. Akwafina was great as Scuttle and Melissa McCarthy, though I'm not normally a fan, knocked it out of the park as Ursula. Javier Bardem definitely looked the part but the role was a bit meh.

Favourite bit was Jodi Benson's (original Ariel 😍) cameo.

Newuser82 · 31/05/2023 18:23

@MaverickSnoopy I took my 4 year old yesterday, he loved it and sat fine throughout the film. It was a long film though so depends on the child I suppose. I'm not sure my eldest would have sat that long at that age.

Ahhh I was trying to work out where I recognised her from! Nice touch.

I have major childhood nostalgia for the Little Mermaid, although as an adult I recognise that it has some v problematic messages. I thought the remake handled these as restoratively as possible, given it was v faithful to the original. Ariel here definitely had a bit more autonomy and fleshing out Eric a bit, creating a common sense of 'wanting more' so that he wasn't just 'first random human she has ever seen' really helped.

I thought it was beautifully shot and the casting was great. 5yo and 11yo enjoyed it too although 5yo got a bit wriggly. I anticipated that though - all the remakes are a bit longer and more detailed than the originals.

As far as other remakes go, I liked Beauty and the Beast and quite liked Aladdin. Got a bit bored in Dumbo. Loved Cruella but that's not exactly a 'remake' as such.

LacewingOrpington · 31/05/2023 19:06

My DH and I enjoyed it more than we thought we would. He would have missed the Diana and Catherine name part if I hadn’t mentioned it before hand and our child certainly didn’t notice it. They loved it and we listened to the soundtrack on the way home and every day since!
