New Top Gun is finally out next month, so long overdue, I'm hoping it won't disappoint! 🤞

OP posts:
SirChenjins · 05/06/2022 18:42

True! Although I probably just need to stop overthinking it Grin

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 05/06/2022 18:48

Ah, but where would the fun be in that?

Also (SPOILERS) it's plausible that the Rooster character is older than some of the other pilots at least as while they are all in the same career stage, we know that Mav pulled his application papers (? Or something like that) and he was delayed - Mav said he took years off his career, I think Rooster said it put him back four years?

SirChenjins · 05/06/2022 19:07

Yes that’s true - he just didn’t seem a mere 19 years younger than TC. I’d have said they were all mid/late twenties - v early 30s at most.

Wonder at what age (ANOTHER SPOILER) his mum died if TC promised her he’d pull his papers? And could a Captain even do that?

I wondered if it was another favour from ice man. Guessing a captain wouldn't have enough influence but Ice could have been whatever upper rank would apply to the navy quite quickly as it seemed he'd been saving Mav's arse for years.

SirChenjins · 05/06/2022 20:11

That’s true - I think it would have had to come from someone more senior (and better liked) in the navy than Maverick. It’s a shame the two women from the first film were just written out, but maybe they weren’t interested in being involved.
Was Penny around in the first film? I don’t remember her.

Penny wasn't on screen in the first, but is named and is the Admiral's daughter

penny was mentioned a couple of times as a high up officers daughter maverick had been seeing. Jist I got was he’d dumped her- for Top Gun? Which didn’t do him any favours 😂

Kelly McGuinness wasn’t asked- she has said she is too old, too fat, and the right age for her looks for the film. She’s not wrong.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 05/06/2022 21:04

Absolute loved it. It had everything and more

They couldn’t really be in it though. The story has moved on. It would have been dull if Mav was still with Charlie. I suppose Carole could have been around but where do you draw the line. Should Wolfman, Viper, Jester, Slider, Merlin and Hollywood all have been back. TG is my absolute favourite film but I am glad it was a new cast. I’ve seen in 4 times in 10 days 😀.

SirChenjins · 05/06/2022 21:32

I wouldn’t have thought Maverick and Charlie would have still been together - she was going places career-wise that he couldn’t/wouldn’t have. I’d have liked to see her acknowledged in some way.

Pirate009 · 05/06/2022 21:38

I loved it. Also cried in parts!!! I did think the Val Kilmer plot was sad, his real life illness and how it ended up in the film was a bit close to home! Great film, didn’t know if they could do it justice but they did!

ENoeuf · 05/06/2022 21:41

I would have loved cameos tbh

Torin · 05/06/2022 21:48

I watched the trailer just to see Iceman, but was sadly disappointed.

Need someone in the know to tell us what the age of the pilots would be most likely to be at this point in their career!

They're about 25 when they're doing this @SirSamVimesCityWatch

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 06/06/2022 09:59

Oh in that case most of them were too old! Glen Powell (Hangman) is 33. The actress who played Phoenix looked maybe late 20s, the actor who played Bob maybe early 30s?

Reallyreallyborednow · 06/06/2022 11:16

tim robbins was barely in the first one. I was suprised someone of his height would fit in one of those planes 😂. That and that Tom would allow someone so much taller than him to be in the same shot 😂

EachandEveryone · 06/06/2022 11:52

I’ve just realised the lovely Jennifer Connelly is married to Paul Bettany who was involved with those vile text messages with Johnny Depp 🙁

bizzey · 07/06/2022 02:02

OMG !!
I am still buzzing!

Back from cinema a few hours ago...

So glad I pushed DS to watch it in the cinema with me .

It needed the cinema ...and not our TV at Christmas !!

TheJubileeLion · 07/06/2022 23:34

DH & I went for a date night movie and both came out with big cheesy teenage grins.

Everything you thought would happen DID happen, exactly when you expected it to, and very very loud. It was both exciting and comforting at the same time.

And - is this even a spoiler? - when the big love scene montage rolled around, it was so sweetly middle-aged I thought he might disappear at one point and return with tea and toast.

So many little poignant moments amidst the crashes and bangs that I wasn't expecting. And when he turns up in the bar with his Richard Gere outfit on...

bizzey · 08/06/2022 13:35

I thought the "love scene" was sweet as well....not the cringe fest I had to endure watching Black Swan with the DC's !!!,

Sturmundcalm · 09/06/2022 18:55

I liked it but found the motorbike stuff really jarring - times have changed and the idea that a middle aged woman would ride pillion without a helmet while heading home to her teenage daughter just had me 😱😱😱

i watched the original with my kids a few weeks ago and they thought it was v dull - DD saw it last night with work and def thought the new one was better.

SirChenjins · 09/06/2022 19:33

I agree, the love scene was really well done - just right. The motorbike riding without the helmet upset me the first time round when I was a teenager (I was middle aged before my time!) and it upset me this time too. Naughty Mav.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 09/06/2022 21:05

Is the bike thing a cultural issue? Are Americans more likely to see it as normal not to wear one? Am just thinking of the end of Ewan McGregor's long way round documentary, when they rode into New York at the end they were accompanied by loads of bikers and I'm sure hardly any of them were wearing helmets.

SirChenjins · 09/06/2022 22:06

It could very well be

Adelaide12 · 10/06/2022 17:00

Saw it, really enjoyed it (although im not a huge TC fan).
Loved the nods back to the first film such as Mav walking through the recruits when being introduced, closeup on his folder, just like Charlie.
only things I didn’t like was too many very close up shots of TCs face, and the rather rushed finale when they stole the plane.
Was there any significance to the scenes near the end where he came into the bar in his dress whites and whispered in Pennys ear? Then she hugged him on the beach? Was that just a goodbye?
I sorta hoped for a Just Married sign on the back of his small plane at the end!
