Please tell me which horror film/s made you genuinely scared (preferably a jumpy one)?

I've always loved horrors (except for a few years after I had my DCs and for some reason just could not watch them) but now I can't seem to find a single one that I find actually scary at all...Interesting and entertaining, yes, but not scary. Help!

A film I switched on in the 90s not realising what it was - it still stays with me (I avoid horror/disturbing films usually!) Called The Vanishing - Dutch version called Spoorloos (released 1988). Apparently the 1993 remake is pants!

AleynEivlys · 19/09/2021 09:36

I forgot The Children. That was nasty too.

BeaucoupFish · 19/09/2021 09:47

@SpittinKitten

Brilliant…..thank you 😂😂😂

Needhelp101 · 19/09/2021 13:41

I have a theory that all great horror is about grief.

Some great suggestions here. Definitely The Babadook, Hereditary, I .T.

A couple of left field suggestions:
Whistle and I'll Come to You. 1960s black and white adaptation of an M.R. James story. It is terrifying.

Requiem for a Dream. Not a horror, but one of the most horrific films I've ever watched.

On a slightly lighter note, Dog Soldiers ☺️

Needhelp101 · 19/09/2021 13:42

Oh, and The Borderlands! Micro-budget British film, manages to be funny and also VERY scary. The ending! 😲

FirstTimeMommy2021 · 19/09/2021 13:44

Paranormal activity

fluffiphlox · 19/09/2021 13:44

Not a horror as such but ‘Blue Velvet’ gave me the screaming ab-dabs.

Nitgel · 19/09/2021 14:32

Borderlands is great. It Follows is super creepy

Yes! There is a fella who does readings of M.R James ghost stories, dressed as the author, I've been to see him a couple of times and his telling of Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You and The Ash Tree really creeped me out, he tells them by candlelight, fantastic stuff. Nunkie his name is.

AuntMasha · 19/09/2021 15:52

All those old ‘Ghost Story for Christmas’ adaptations of M R James are great. And ‘The Signalman’, a Dickens adaptation still manages to chill.

BasiliskStare · 19/09/2021 19:08

@AuntMashab - Thank you - I was trying to remember the name of that film "The signalman" - Utterly chilling. Good shout - thank you again

KingofQueens · 19/09/2021 20:05

Oh, I totally forgot to mention the original Austrian version of Funny Games. Terrifying.

Nitgel · 20/09/2021 06:48

A youtube channel has all those Ghist Stories for christmas.

Nitgel · 20/09/2021 06:50

And The Ash Tree was particularly creepy and not one I had seen before.

Neonplant · 20/09/2021 06:59

The orphanage. I think it's a Spanish language film out around 2008. Absolutely terrified me!

mizu · 20/09/2021 07:16

Can't watch horror films anymore. Eden Lake was pretty scary just because it seems so real.

DialSquare · 20/09/2021 10:14

I'm a complete wuss with scary films. I avoid them like the plague but I follow this YouTuber and when I first watched this video, it stayed with me for weeks. I think it's because the video was totally unrelated to anything spooky so makes it more scary,

I found It Follows to be creepy but just too ludicrous to take seriously.

I like The Others. But probably more sad than scary (grief again).

The adaptation of The Little Stranger is good and creepy.

thismeansnothing · 20/09/2021 10:29

Threads. It's not scary as in making you jump out your skin. But more the fear and and dread that this could happen

DeadButDelicious · 20/09/2021 11:17

It really is @Needhelp101 he's been doing streamed versions during the pandemic not quite the same atmosphere but still good.

Threads scared the shit out of me @thismeansnothing too real. I've only watched it once. That was enough.

01FHL · 20/09/2021 23:55

@pickingdaisies

The ring (Japanese original) Blair witch project. One whose name escapes me, something like Inheritance, but not that, anyone know what I'm thinking of?
Ringu Japanese Ring

Good yea especially late night with a black dressing gown hanging in the bedroom...

01FHL · 20/09/2021 23:57

Ring. Ringu Japanese version.

Event Horizon

Bells3032 · 24/09/2021 11:56

Sinister
1408
Drag me to hell
(not horror but the number 13 is very creepy)

monarchoftheglen · 25/09/2021 10:01

We watched The Babadook yesterday- after it appeared a couple of times here - wasn't what I was expecting at all!
