Please tell me which horror film/s made you genuinely scared (preferably a jumpy one)?

I've always loved horrors (except for a few years after I had my DCs and for some reason just could not watch them) but now I can't seem to find a single one that I find actually scary at all...Interesting and entertaining, yes, but not scary. Help!

@ShaneTheThird

Does anyone have shudder? I watch a lot of stuff on there.
Yes, ALTER is pretty good too!
confessionsOfa · 18/09/2021 18:05

I would like to the original 'I spit on your Grave'

It took me years to pluck up the courage to watch the original 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' but I was fine with that. It didn't affect me like 'Wolf Creek' which I'll always remember as scaring the crap out of me.

SpittinKitten · 18/09/2021 18:08

@LubaLuca

The Blair Witch Project. I know that lots of people didn't find it at all scary, but it's the only film I've seen that really preyed on my mind. I was genuinely frightened by it, perhaps because the scares were based purely on things I'd imagined. Visual horror doesn't have the same effect, it doesn't stay there in my head.
Another one can't watch again Grin It was the bundle of ... eyes?tongue?hair?, and the final scene that did it for me.

@Nitgel

The changeling with George c scott is a good horror it's on prime.
Yes.
SusannahHolmes · 18/09/2021 18:17

The Wicker Man.
Genuinely disturbing.

Andylion · 18/09/2021 18:18

Ops. Phone rang while I was typing, I almost watched this last year, but knew I would be afraid to sleep alone. It is scary

MolyHolyGuacamole · 18/09/2021 18:39

Hellhouse LLC.

Not very mainstream, I read about it on a list of underrated horror films. I'm very picky with horror and find most of it shit, either just too gory or too busy being artsy and trying to be above it all (The Witch). It's shot found footage style which I also don't generally like but omg it scared the shit out of me.

The only other films that really do it for me are The Conjuring and The Others.

I love this thread, horror is my favourite genre!

@merrygoround88

Not a horror but I didn’t sleep after silence of the lambs
Same! I was a teenager and afterwards I went to the bathroom and was looking over my shoulder. I don't find it as scary anymore, but still love watching it as it's such a good story and Clarice is such a great character.
MolyHolyGuacamole · 18/09/2021 18:41

@pickingdaisies

The ring (Japanese original) Blair witch project. One whose name escapes me, something like Inheritance, but not that, anyone know what I'm thinking of?
Hereditary? I admit I didn't enjoy this one, so bizarre
Tempusfudgeit · 18/09/2021 18:44

The Descent. Spelunking + monsters = shudder. Genuine scary (stays with you for years)

Libraryghost · 18/09/2021 18:44

The changeling really scared me so much so I have never watched it again. Midsommar was truly horrific, a beautiful film full of flowers and sunshine but that made it even more disturbing

MolyHolyGuacamole · 18/09/2021 18:45

@PurpleishDahlia

I have the same problem, I don't find any of them scary. I have only been terrified with 2 films: The shining and It follows.
This is so funny, I also consider myself to be rarely frightened by horror films but It Follows made me laugh! I saw it at the cinema with friends, sometimes I think if I watched a film in different circumstances it might have had a totally different impact on me

@Sorrynotsorry2

Gremlins...
So disturbing, and I watched it as a child! But I watch it every Christmas without fail, it's a classic
MolyHolyGuacamole · 18/09/2021 18:49

@QuestionableMouse

Hostel and the like aren't horror, they're torture porn and disgusting.
Agreed, I couldn't finish it. Hate gore disguised as horror. Same with the Saw franchise, first one was good but they just got more and more gory with the torture I never watched then after the 3rd one
Pootle40 · 18/09/2021 18:51

Original Black Christmas

MolyHolyGuacamole · 18/09/2021 18:53

@Pootle40

Original Black Christmas
Yes! I watched it one Halloween and was delightfully surprised. That creepy voice on the telephone, shudders!

I watched the newest remake of that (Cary Elwes) but it was a practically whole new shit film

KillingMeDeftly · 18/09/2021 18:54

There's a very old B&W film with Deborah Kerr called The Innocents, which is based on Turn of the Screw, and is absolutely terrifying. One of those properly creepy films where what you don't see is scarier. The Others with Nicole Kidman was similarly chilling.

I find that once I see the monster or ghost etc then the film ceases to be scary!

CottageOnTheHill · 18/09/2021 18:55

I watched the first 30 mins of The Human Centipede and switched it off. I had nightmares for weeks afterwards.

SpittinKitten · 18/09/2021 18:55

Oh! Nosferatu (b&w)

suckingonchillidogs · 18/09/2021 18:56

There's a bit RIGHT at the very end of Sinister that I swear made me jump a couple of feet in the air. Just when I thought I'd made it through relatively unscathed as well!

LukeEvansWife · 18/09/2021 19:02

@Sorrynotsorry2

Gremlins...
This!! Scared the shit out of my when I was fifteen, now watch it every year Grin

I can’t be arsed with pure gore like Saw etc.

Also I have to go onto doesthedogdie.com before I watch anything as I can’t watch anything that involves animals being hurt (that extends to kids films)

fedup078 · 18/09/2021 19:20

I'm watching The Changeling now after reading this thread

confessionsOfa · 18/09/2021 19:24

It's a brilliant film and quite unexpected. Enjoy
ToodlesOodles · 18/09/2021 19:24

The Ring and Dark Water (the original Japanese versions). Dark Water manages to make the viewer feel terror at tiny motifs - the little child's bag that appears? I need to rewatch!
Blair Witch - so simple but terrifying. And you don't see very much - no gore really. I remember seeing it at the cinema and getting sweaty palms every time the sun sets in the film, for fear of what was coming next.
The Descent for caving horror.

confessionsOfa · 18/09/2021 19:26

You're absolutely right. I wasn't sure what to think after watching it. Left me feeling very uneasy for a few weeks after actually
