Please tell me which horror film/s made you genuinely scared (preferably a jumpy one)?

I've always loved horrors (except for a few years after I had my DCs and for some reason just could not watch them) but now I can't seem to find a single one that I find actually scary at all...Interesting and entertaining, yes, but not scary. Help!

These posts are reminding me of the great and good of horror Grin

Hellocatshome · 18/09/2021 21:06

House of Wax gave me nightmares

Theaspidistraiswilting · 18/09/2021 21:08

Aliens. Accidentally watched it when I was about 12 and the sneakers covered in alien slime still scare the pants off me...

Pootle40 · 18/09/2021 21:08

@MolyHolyGuacamole some films they shouldn't remake it. I heard it was shit so I've not bothered.

I still say for it's time Psycho is also very scary given the lack of gore in it.

AleynEivlys · 18/09/2021 21:18

I second Hereditary - horrible! It's very good, though. The Babadook was disturbing too, more because I was never quite sure whether the mother actually loved/wanted her son or not. I watched it after I just had my first baby. I was in a bit of a state, feeling quite anxious and depressed about new motherhood, and it really fucked with me.

The Orphanage, The Eye (Korean version), Train to Busan (it's a zombie one) and Goodnight Mommy are some I found pretty scary. All those are in other languages with subtitles though, if that's not your bag. What else? There was a film called Mama. There were some decent moments in that. Others I enjoyed include Joy Ride, Identity, Splice and Sinister.

Finally, I've always thought The Others was quite a good film!

LukeEvansWife · 18/09/2021 21:20

The Orphan
The original Omen films (okay so the Final Conflict wasn’t that scary but Sam Neill was soooooooooo hot)

AuntMasha · 18/09/2021 21:47

As pp, mentioned, Masque of the Red Death is a great Hammer classic. Luscious looking film, design and colour wise.

It is one of the best films for cinematography and costumes I have ever seen
Kanaloa · 18/09/2021 21:50

I forgot about Orphan! I liked that movie because the whole time I thought it was building to a possessed/demon child movie along the lines of The Omen and then it just went in a totally different direction which I liked.

lalalawa · 18/09/2021 21:50

Drag me to hell and the rite. Anything with demonic possession scares the bejesus out of me

firsttimedad79 · 18/09/2021 21:53

Ringu (the Japanese original of the ring)

It follows - that was scary lol

I don't like scary films, am a wuss! Lol

Midnightstar76 · 18/09/2021 22:07

For me it would have to be The Wicker Man British folk horror film 1973. It really got to me especially the ending.

BeaucoupFish · 18/09/2021 23:09

@Midnightstar76
Agree it is an sinister film, but I would say the Nicolas Cage remake is a comedy 😂
(the `Nic Cage effect’)

I think you might like this...

Halloween 1 and 2 (John Carpenter versions)
Dead Silence
Hereditary
I'm not easily scared but Halloween was the first horror I ever watched aged about 8 so Michael Myers has always scared me, the other two are creepy as fuck.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 19/09/2021 00:01

I found The Babadook incredibly sad, that descent in to mental illness. I also thought The Others was really sad too.

bendmeoverbackwards · 19/09/2021 02:35

We need to talk about Kevin. My heart was pounding throughout. I still can’t look at a bow and arrow.

And 2 Bette Davis films - Whatever happened to Baby Jane - and a little known film called The Nanny. BD is terrifying in both!

QueenBee52 · 19/09/2021 03:08

The Exorcist

never again will I even look at the DVD ... I chucked it out 😧

FixItUpChappie · 19/09/2021 03:29

When I saw The Blair Witch Project in the 90s it absolutely terrified me. With it's "based on a true story" stuff and remember it was novel for the time. I really don't do well with horror movies and on those occasions, such as above, when I've gone to one I've always thoroughly regretted it.

BasiliskStare · 19/09/2021 03:56

YY to Blair Witch Project

But I watched S7ven (sp?) when I was 6 months pregnant - I wish I had not . Probably not in the right frame of mind etc but still not one I would watch again. Disturbing rather than jumpy I would say.

Spyro1234 · 19/09/2021 04:58

Hereditary!!!!

Faith1976 · 19/09/2021 07:39

@BeaucoupFish @SpittinKitten never seen the Nichols Cage comedy but that clip 🤣😂🤣

CovidCorvid · 19/09/2021 07:58

Which is the horror film with the small girl who can see/hear things in the tv and then gets trapped in the tv? Saw that as a teen and it scared the shit out of me….is it Pet Cemetery? I remember a graveyard.

Poltergeist?

Loads on here for me to go watch, love horror but rarely find them scary. DH is scared of his own shadow so it's always fun watching with him Grin he walked out when I tried to get him to watch the conjuring.

Really liked wolf creek - there's a series version that's worth a watch (maybe on shudder on Amazon).

DeadButDelicious · 19/09/2021 08:31

The Blair Witch Project stuck with me for a very long time, I saw it when it first came out and the marketing around it was phenomenal. They've put so much effort into the 'lore' around it. Still one of my favourites but it's not a 'jump scare' type film. We don't talk about the 2 sequels.

The Exorcist 3 (the best one in my humble opinion) has a cracker of a jump scare in it. I can't watch the first one. That film scares the bejesus out of me.

The Babadook is good (only needed to watch that one once), hereditary, the first paranormal activity (if you can find the original cut before they set it up for the sequels), I really enjoyed The VVitch.

Shudder is definitely a good service to try, there is a YouTuber I watch called Jake Munro who has a code to get 30 days free it's JAKEMUNRO
