Please tell me which horror film/s made you genuinely scared (preferably a jumpy one)?

I've always loved horrors (except for a few years after I had my DCs and for some reason just could not watch them) but now I can't seem to find a single one that I find actually scary at all...Interesting and entertaining, yes, but not scary. Help!

Two films spring to mind - both I found horrific.

A Belgian film called Calvaire/The Ordeal. Which is weird and distressing, disturbing and terrifying.

And a Japanese film called Audition- again a difficult watch.

The Strangers
Hostel

Evil people scare me more than supernatural phenomena!!

Goodnight Mommy and Eden Lake are two of my faves!

The Strangers Hostel

Evil people scare me more than supernatural phenomena!!

There’s a scene in Hostel I think about a lot, it makes me literally curl my feet. Such a horrific movie, and they made sequels as well.

Always freaked me out seeing Louis from Suits just hanging out torturing people to death but still acting a bit like Louis.

QuestionableMouse · 18/09/2021 11:37

Hostel and the like aren't horror, they're torture porn and disgusting.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 18/09/2021 12:01

Wolf creek, something so terrifying about the outback. Also the wolf creek series is great

Not much scares me it needs to be psychological not blood and guts, an old one that is scary is, when a stranger calls (new version not really scary).I love a good horror but the modern one's are just not as good as the oldies.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 18/09/2021 12:47

@Durbeyfield

I should add - the Japanese Dark Water ( not the US version)
Really? I didn't find it scary at all. Although I'd previously googled the plot so that's maybe why
AuntMasha · 18/09/2021 12:54

Wolf Creek for me too. I think it’s because it’s based on a RL case, the Ivan Milat backpacker murders in Australia.

And ‘Audition’ - never want to see those final scenes again, thank you.

Durbeyfield · 18/09/2021 14:19

I found it awful, hoping and couldn’t let go of the idea of a the woman being destined to live in that horrific flat with the living corpse of the little girl instead of her own child. However I find horror films generally terrifying and am quite a lightweight in that respect.

SocksAndTheCity · 18/09/2021 16:13

Audition is just wonderful Smile

I love horror films but rarely find them scary, although I like a good jump scare and I think Sinister is great for that - I was at the UK premiere at FrightFest in 2012 (I think) where the director came over, and he was a lovely young fella who was thrilled to bits that his film was being shown on the (massive and no longer with us) Empire 1 screen, so I've always had a fondness for it.

The Wicker Man (the proper one) was the first film to absolutely horrify me, and even despite showing it's age a bit it still does.

ShaneTheThird · 18/09/2021 16:29

The body of Anna Fritz. Not scary but really uncomfortable and tense. One of the few movies where I was on the edge of my seat rooting for the main character. I kept tight hold of DPS arm at the end my heart in my mouth.

ShaneTheThird · 18/09/2021 16:34

Also watched the dark and the wicked on Amazon last week. Thought it was quite good, some horrible scenes in it.

StormcloakNord · 18/09/2021 16:45

Midsommar was great.

Olga's death in Suspiria... properly disturbing. I love stuff like that tho!

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 16:48

I didn't find Midsommer scary just too gory for me which I don't like. Same with the other one Hereditary, I stopped watching after the head.

gibletjane · 18/09/2021 16:52

supernatural scares me far more though. You can kill a human but not a spirit or thing.

ShaneTheThird · 18/09/2021 16:52

I enjoyed hereditary but hated midsommer. The director has a new film coming out called old.

ShaneTheThird · 18/09/2021 16:53

I know loads of people hate it but the first 2 paranormal activity films are my favourite. I love implied horror where you don't quite see something but you know it's there.

MarshaBradyo · 18/09/2021 16:53

The Ring scared me for ages

I can’t watch stuff like Hostel - too much, I had to turn it off after first scenes

I’m kind of interested in Wolf Creek and Babadook but know it would stick with me visually

I found Eden Lake pretty harsh

Anotherboy · 18/09/2021 16:59

Placemarking too! Funny you should say about your aversion to horror films after dc, I was the same, especially with gore

Rosesareyellow · 18/09/2021 17:01

Insidious - probably more so because it was in the cinema.

ShaneTheThird · 18/09/2021 17:05

Babadook is really good because it's a metaphor. Very clever and disturbing.

SocksAndTheCity · 18/09/2021 17:05

@ShaneTheThird

I enjoyed hereditary but hated midsommer. The director has a new film coming out called old.
Old is from M Night Shymalan, not Ari Aster - depending on where you are it's already been and gone in the cinemas here (UK).

It was OK, but basically just a very long Twilight Zone episode.

ShaneTheThird · 18/09/2021 17:07

AHH you are totally right wrong director! I haven't seen it yet but I'm unsure if I will.

ShaneTheThird · 18/09/2021 17:07

Does anyone have shudder? I watch a lot of stuff on there.

LubaLuca · 18/09/2021 17:15

The Blair Witch Project. I know that lots of people didn't find it at all scary, but it's the only film I've seen that really preyed on my mind. I was genuinely frightened by it, perhaps because the scares were based purely on things I'd imagined. Visual horror doesn't have the same effect, it doesn't stay there in my head.
