Please tell me which horror film/s made you genuinely scared (preferably a jumpy one)?

I've always loved horrors (except for a few years after I had my DCs and for some reason just could not watch them) but now I can't seem to find a single one that I find actually scary at all...Interesting and entertaining, yes, but not scary. Help!

Carrie. The bit were she's in the middle of the road after the prom and a car comes towards her and she doesn't jump out of the way but sort of twists herself and I think the car goes off the road. Never watched it since because of that scene!!!

Agree with PP about The Descent. Genuinely terrified me watching it at the cinema. As did the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake starring Jessica Biel

For me it's...

  1. Hereditary. Absolutely awful to watch in terms of terror, it frightened the life out of me but the film itself is well done.
  2. The Babadook,
  3. Midsommar. Bit of a different genre but it gets under your skin.

Original Candyman freaked me out, haven’t seen new version.

The Descent, good story and I’m very claustrophobic so found it terrifying.

Drag me to hell, some great jump scares.

Mum and Dad, weird Uk horror, really unsettling and feels ‘real’ as the actors aren’t ‘beautiful’, unlike in some US horrors, so seems v plausible.

Eden Lake - horrifying, again feels like it could happen.

The Orphanage, nearly wet my pants!!!!

28 days later, really stuck with me, not sure I could watch it again more due to the humans actions rather than the zombies.

@LukeEvansWife

Patrick. It’s a 1970s Australian film and it’s mainly a man in a coma and a nurse. I was so cynical before I watched it but spent several hours watching comedies after because I was too scared to go to bed
I've watched that a few times. It would probably still creep me out a bit!

Phantasm. The first one. I watched it when I was about 15. It was all fine...until the very end bit that gave me nightmares for months afterwards!
The Descent, another one with the end bit!
I wouldn't say they scare me as much now, but if they just make me jump a couple of times then I'm happy.

There was one I saw when I was in my early 20s, the only real big I can remember was a house and the people trying to get out, aren't they always, and this one person decided it would be fine to climb out via a sash window. The window closed on them halfway out, and cut them in half so outside was the top half of the body and inside were the legs, all still waving about!
I'd love to see that one again, if I knew what it was.

Just watched Night House - very good psych thriller with just a pinch of supernatural. A couple of occasions when I had to look through fingers ;-)

Trawling through this thread looking for some recommendations for supernatural 'jump out of seat' scares.

I have watched so many horror films over the years I can't remember the names of them but scenarios that usually give me the willies are where/when:-

You look in the mirror and see someone behind
You look out of the window into the dark (why do so many houses in horror films have huge windows with no blinds or curtains?!) and something is looking back in
Something sitting in the back seat of the car
Cellars, basements and attics
Under beds or in cupboards

All the above have and do scare the bejesus out of me and definitely are at the back of my mind in any similar situation - i.e. must draw curtains at night, can't stand attics or basements etc.

Anyone else affected like this from watching horror films?

Suspiria - is this the original or remake?
