In your opinion, which roles were miscast?

I’ll start off with musicals:

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables
Piers Brosnan in Mamma Mia

I don’t think their singing was strong enough. There were enough star names so I wished the producers had been braver and cast unknowns who could act and sing.

I hear you!

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 11/08/2020 22:54

Ghost- absolutely! I watched it thinking who is this whiny wimp. I've rarely seen a Marius I like though tbh, though all the Enjolras actors have been splendid.

ShowOfHands · 11/08/2020 22:57

@GhostTypeEevee I agree. In amongst those divine voices, he is so weak. I love the 25th anniversary concert and actually, while I was sceptical about Ramin as Enjolras (from a looks pov), he was sublime and Hadley was a brilliant Grantaire opposite him.

Matt Lucas struggled vocally too but I liked his physicality.

ScammedOrWhat · 11/08/2020 22:58

Jude Law in Contagion. His character is supposed to be a nerdy conspiracy theorist, with dodgy teeth. He's so clashingly out of place.

Nicole Kidman in the Golden Compass. That woman can't act.

Has anyone said the Weasley twins in Harry Potter yet? Were the casting requirements for those roles limited to 'must be ginger twins'? And where there really no other twins in the world who could do it better?

IndieTara · 11/08/2020 23:02

@hippofrog I have to disagree. Loved Mark Rylance in Wolf Hall

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 11/08/2020 23:02

The Weasleys aren't ginger in real life I don't think.
I think compared to some of the planks of wood in HP, the twins aren't that bad really!

Nutellalovesme · 11/08/2020 23:03

Daniel Craig as Bond

Kerry Howard as a young Hyacinth Bucket

GhostTypeEevee · 11/08/2020 23:06

@ShowOfHands

The chemistry between Karimloo and Hadley is really powerfu and they both blow Jonas out of the water. I presume they chose him due to being in a popular band but it's a shame they didn't chose a better singer like Alistair Brammer, although he may have looked too old I suppose.

I do like Alfie Boe but my favourite is Colm Wilkinson (I actually squealed in the cinema when he came on in the film)

GhostTypeEevee · 11/08/2020 23:07

Everyone in Alexander. How is it believable that Angelina Jolie is Colin Farrell's mum?

AnEleanor · 11/08/2020 23:08

This has reminded me about Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, which I had managed to forget. What a wasted opportunity to cast someone gorgeous. I always imagined him looking like Ben Barnes although to be fair he would have been too young at the time. Sirius is constantly described as basically really hot so it’s not like they could have missed it.

TheKarenWhoKnocks · 11/08/2020 23:09

@whatever1980 yes! I was so disappointed at the changeover while watching - I felt like I'd lost something.

elenacampana · 11/08/2020 23:11

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter.

jakeyboy1 · 11/08/2020 23:13

Jamie Dornan in Fifty Shades. Too young.

quarentini · 11/08/2020 23:14

Kevin Costner as Robin Hood
Anything keanu is in

sooveritalready · 11/08/2020 23:16

Carey Mulligan in The Great Gatsby, def think Blake Lively should have got that part.

Zhx3 · 11/08/2020 23:17

@GhostTypeEevee

Not really a film but no way should Nick Jonas have played Marius in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Mis. It ruins it for me
This reminded me of this from YouTube, which dd loves to laugh at. It makes Nick Jonas sound much better Grin.
SquirtleSquad · 11/08/2020 23:18

Elijah Wood in Green Street - awful!

Alltheprettyseahorses · 11/08/2020 23:22

Emma Watson in anything but particularly Beauty and the Beast, a role for which, at the risk of sounding catty, she was totally unsuited in every way imaginable. Even worse when they had the warmth, beauty and charisma of Gugu Mbatha-Raw in the same film. She completely ruined the otherwise wonderful film, which stands in stark contrast to the near-perfection of Cinderella and Aladdin and, if Halle Bailey is anything to go by, The Little Mermaid too.

ScammedOrWhat · 11/08/2020 23:29

The Weasleys aren't ginger in real life I don't think.

Really? Then their only qualifying feature was they were twins? Jeez, the casting folks must have been desperate.

I think compared to some of the planks of wood in HP, the twins aren't that bad really!

I agree most of the children in HP are terrible but I think the twins are head and shoulders above them as the most atrocious actors in the entire thing!

It beggars belief that this already hugely popular book adaptation couldn't find better child actors.

Oh god that reminds me... the kid who played Roger in the Golden Compass was also atrocious. Surely there are children out there who can act?

Gubbeen · 11/08/2020 23:31

To whoever complained about Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet being too old to play the Dashwood sisters in Sense and Sensibility, ET, yes, but Kate Winslet was still a teenager and playing a 16/17 year old.

ET wrote the screenplay and had no intention of playing Elinor, but the studio insisted after she’d won her Oscar because they thought she was bankable.

The age ‘scandal’ for me in the casting is that Colonel Brandon is 35 to Marianne’s 17, but Alan Rickman was 28 years older than Kate Winslet, which no one seems to object to!

ChavvySexPond · 11/08/2020 23:33

@Toddlerteaplease

All of the cast in the recent version of Emma
They made me dislike Mr Knightley.

I ADORE Mr Knightley.

I quite enjoyed Bill Nighy's take though.

MsDFye · 11/08/2020 23:35

In Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri the actress who plays Woody Harrleson's (the police chief) wife is at lest twenty years too young and randomly has an Australian accent! Drives me nuts every time I see this otherwise excellent film.

PushyMeez · 11/08/2020 23:39

@Illdealwithitinaminute

Controversial but I'm saying Jennifer Ehle in P&P, she seemed too old somehow (and I found her unlikeable)

Even more controversially, I agree! I watched P & P again in lockdown, she was a tad too old, but really not quite right in terms of looks, and was such a pain in the butt, I wondered what Darcy saw in her, all sardonic looks and up her own arse lectures, admittedly this is partly how Jane Austen wrote the character, but she just wasn't witty or even that attractive!

@Illdealwithitinaminute LOL thank you, exactly what I mean! 👏😆
MorbidMuch · 11/08/2020 23:40

@Ginger1982

Definitely Keira K in P&P but then I'm a Jennifer Ehle girl!
Agree totally. I also agree that much as I like Jack Black and his character in The Holiday, he didn't have the right (or any) chemistry with KW.

OTOH I love the casting in the Mamma Mia films. I find the lack of musical talent from so many of them adds to the charm and the humour of the film. I think it would lose something from the films if they were all better singers.

I also enjoyed the recent Emma and Little Women a lot and didn't have any issues with the casting for them.

I've never found a version of Jane Eyre that I've felt was cast appropriately to fit my imagined characters.

YgritteSnow · 11/08/2020 23:40

Emma Watson can't act. I'm sorry but it's true. It's all winsome, crinkly eyed, quivering. I find her near on unwatchable. Even when she punches Malfoy I still don't like her!

I also didn't like Scarlett Johannson as Black Widow. I didn't find her at all believable in the way I did the other characters and even the supposed deep friendship with Hawkeye didn't ring true. He was far better when he was with Wanda Maximoff. They seemed to have real chemistry.

David Schwimmer in everything he does except Ross.
