In your opinion, which roles were miscast?

I’ll start off with musicals:

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables
Piers Brosnan in Mamma Mia

I don’t think their singing was strong enough. There were enough star names so I wished the producers had been braver and cast unknowns who could act and sing.

I like Ehle and Firth in TV P&P but I find MacFadyen and Knightly much more shippable - I think it’s their vulnerability.

Donald Trump as the President of the United States.

Everyone in the new little women film, Laurie looked like he’d married his mum! All the girls were wrong but Amy & Meg were the most wrong

on politics, I am not convinced on K-Harris as VP. She's ok, but very sound bitey. Meh.

stargirl1701 · 11/08/2020 22:14

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher.

whatever1980 · 11/08/2020 22:15

Elizabeth McGovern in once upon a time in America. Jennifer Connolly was amazing as the younger version feisty and one to watch.

Elizabeth McGovern played the older version as shy and quiet - didn't match up

This! This is what I came here to say! KK is too pouty and just doesn't fit the role.

She's at her most non pouty in this film!

EIRA KNIGHTLEY]] was banned from pouting by director Joe Wright, who she worked with on Atonement and Pride & Prejudice.
"I've got it out of my system. I didn't know I did it so much, and Joe banned it from the film," Knightley said on The Graham Norton Show. "Then, when we did the Chanel adverts he said, 'You know that pout we banned? Can we have it back and as much as possible.'"

Another for Florence Pugh as Amy March. Not well done at all, though it didn't help in that in Little Women adaptations they often use two actresses, for younger and older Amy, whereas Florence played her throughout.

Thinking about it there are very few consistently good actors in films & so many just act the same in every film.

EmiIyStAubert · 11/08/2020 22:22

Emma Thompson as Elinor Dashwood. And Daniela Denby Ashe as Margaret Hale, I'm sorry to say (though it doesn't detract much from the adaptation.

middleager · 11/08/2020 22:24

I would like to have seen Julie Andrews as Eliza Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady'.

While we're at it, Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer in 'West Side Story'.

ToyKitchenSink · 11/08/2020 22:25

Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge - courtesan my arse! I tend to think she's over-rated anyway. And Keira Knightly too.

Re the Outlander stars - the guy who plays Jamie is only an inch shorter than book Jamie. It's just that Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire, is too tall and willowy. She doesn't feel right to me.

WeakandWobbly · 11/08/2020 22:25

George Clooney as Batman. Whose idea was it to put a mask on the face of one of the most handsome men on the planet (at the time)???? 😁 🙄

EmiIyStAubert · 11/08/2020 22:27

I see I'm not the first to have mentioned Emma Thompson as Elinor! I also thought there was very little chemistry between her and Hugh Grant/Edward Ferrars. Not convincing at all.

MikeUniformMike · 11/08/2020 22:28

@monkeyonthetable, James Norton isn't an Old Etonian. He went to Ampleforth.
Big difference.

sproutsandparsnips · 11/08/2020 22:32

I must say I do agree that Johnny Depp was unsettling as Willy Wonka but I don't agree that he was miscast. I think that the books portray him as a disturbing character - quite dark.
I think that Peter Ustinov was miscast as Poirot and David Suchet was exactly as he should have been.

middleager · 11/08/2020 22:34

@middleager

I would like to have seen Julie Andrews as Eliza Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady'.

While we're at it, Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer in 'West Side Story'.

And most of the cast of Grease Issues with Chicago too...
EmiIyStAubert · 11/08/2020 22:37

Romola Garai as Emma Woodhouse is not quite right either, in my opinion. Kate Beckinsale I prefer in the role.

HalloBrian · 11/08/2020 22:42

Controversial because the actors did an excellent job and I love them, but.....

I wish the hobbits in Lord of the Rings had been real dwarf actors. Even with all the effects and perception trickery I never really believed Elijah Wood was 3ft. And when you watch Willow or Tyrion in GoT you get a much better immerse story experience because the actors really are holding their own in a world where everyone towers over them.

SparkleM · 11/08/2020 22:42

Agree re series 3 of The Crown - Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Coleman not a patch on castings in first two series. Disagree re The Handmaids Tale cast though.

Rene Zellweger in Judy was wrong for me.

ShowOfHands · 11/08/2020 22:42

@GhostTypeEevee

Ramin Karimloo should have been Javert if not Valjean
Yes yes yes @GhostTypeEevee
GhostTypeEevee · 11/08/2020 22:47

Not really a film but no way should Nick Jonas have played Marius in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Mis. It ruins it for me

IamNotDarling · 11/08/2020 22:50

Tom Cruise as The Vampire Lestat.

Natalie Portman in Thor.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Pots in Iron Man.

middleager · 11/08/2020 22:54

Emilia Clarke as Sarah Conor

Peridodo · 11/08/2020 22:54
@peridodo watched knives out also recently and completely agree with your view. Daniel Craig is poor. You wonder why they didn't just pick an American??
@Bubbletrouble43 - I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought this, I was starting to think I was after reading a few reviews praising the film and Daniel Craig.
Exactly, why not just go for an American actor or at least someone who can do the accent convincingly!
