In your opinion, which roles were miscast?

I’ll start off with musicals:

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables
Piers Brosnan in Mamma Mia

I don’t think their singing was strong enough. There were enough star names so I wished the producers had been braver and cast unknowns who could act and sing.

OP posts:

Russell Crowe in anything.

Daniel Radcliffe. Ginny Weasley. Cho Chang. Be hard pressed to say which of the three is the worst actor.

Sofia Coppola Godfather 3

Clint Eastwood The Bridges of Madison County. (No, I don't want to see a 70 year old butt naked ta)

Patienceisvirtuous · 11/08/2020 20:14

Totally disagree re Rene as Bridget - I can’t imagine anyone but her!

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 11/08/2020 20:17

Couldn't agree more, DramaLady52. (Although I am pretty annoyed that I have spent nearly 40 years forgetting her and you have just reminded me AngryGrin).

RedLimoncello · 11/08/2020 20:17

Agree with DR not being right for Harry Potter.

I know JKR wanted an English actor but I always thought that Hayley Joel Something "I see dead people" boy would've nailed Harry Potter. Or else the lad who played the little boy in Finding Neverland. Both wonderful young actors.

Equally the Inanimate Carbon Rod from the Simpsons might have done a better job.

TitianaTitsling · 11/08/2020 20:17

@Concretenotcement

The Harry Potter kids. The most dreadful acting ever. It’s obvious they were cast for their looks rather than acting ability.
Definitely this, Kirsten Stewart in Snow-white and the huntsman, and Jamie Dornan (who I find fantastic in The Fall) in all of the 50 shades Films.
Germolenequeen · 11/08/2020 20:17

James Norton in Happy Valley. Great actor but he never looked like a malnourished, gutter-raised weaselly psychopath. He always looked like the radiantly healthy rugger-playing Old Etonian that he is.

I totally disagree - I watched it not knowing who he was & found him totally convincing in the role 🤷‍♀️
He's fab in everything IMO - totally different characters in War & Peace - Grantchester & McMafia & also 🔥 obv 😅

VerbenaGirl · 11/08/2020 20:17

Renée Zellweger In Bridget Jones Diary. Unforgivable.

Collidascope · 11/08/2020 20:18

Most of the Harry Potter cast. Honourable mentions to the three main child actors and Gary Oldman as Sirius Black. Sirius Black was meant to be early 30s and hot.

Timothy whatshisface as Laurie in the newest Little Women. (Professor Bhaer though... Phew!)

Emma Thompson in Sense and Sensibility. She was meant to be about 20, wasn't she? Unfairly, it wasn't as obvious with Hugh Grant cos there often was a big age gap.

PushyMeez · 11/08/2020 20:19

Controversial but I'm saying Jennifer Ehle in P&P, she seemed too old somehow (and I found her unlikeable) 🤭

Tobey Maguire as Spiderman, he had no humour

All of the live action Beauty and the Beast cast, especially Emma Watson

Paperairplane · 11/08/2020 20:19

Scarlett Johansson as Mary Boleyn and Natalie Portman as Anne Boleyn. Would have been much better the other way around!

merryhouse · 11/08/2020 20:20

Billie Piper as Fanny Price.

Yes, Billie Piper.

Yes, Fanny Price.

It was exactly as bad as you think.

RustyLeesBogBrush · 11/08/2020 20:21

Will Smith - Suicide Squad

Micky Rooney - Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Keanu Reeves/Winona Ryder - Dracula

pontiouspilates · 11/08/2020 20:22

Olivia Coleman in The Crown, Nicholas Cage in everything.

Gubbeen · 11/08/2020 20:23

Jamie Dornan (who I find fantastic in The Fall) in all of the 50 shades Films.

To me, Jamie Dornan in any role looks like a nicely-brought up boy from County Down who would do the Guardian crossword with you, not murder you horribly or get his kicks from doing things to you in his Red Room of Pain, or whatever it was called.

SorrelForbes · 11/08/2020 20:23

Renee Zellweger in bridget Jones. Not believable at all. I would have much preferred Kate Winslet

It's all I think about when I watch it. Which, to be honest, isn't often due to the above issue.

GhostTypeEevee · 11/08/2020 20:24

@RedLimoncello

I think he would have been wasted on the Harry Potter franchise and I wonder if we would have missed out on him being in Bates Hotel and the Good Doctor. He's an amazing actor

RollaCola84 · 11/08/2020 20:24

@SmileTolerantly the ages of virtually all the adults in Harry Potter are wrong. The Mauraders, Snape, the Weasleys, Lockhart should all have been in their 30s, 40s at most by the book so they were all aged up to broadly the same level. It alters some of story points but there was some marvellously casting. Less said about the kids the better....

I love His Dark Materials and no version yet has got Asriel right

CathyorClaire · 11/08/2020 20:24

Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.

Should have been Tommy Steele.

Mochudhu · 11/08/2020 20:24

Anything with Kiera Knightly in a bodice. I think she has a very modern look and don't get why she's so often cast in costume dramas.

GhostTypeEevee · 11/08/2020 20:25

I hadn't realised the casting of the child actors in HP were disliked so much. I thought it was just me

Greenglassteacup · 11/08/2020 20:26

Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Harker in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Awful.

CathyorClaire · 11/08/2020 20:27

@pontiouspilates

Olivia Coleman in The Crown, Nicholas Cage in everything.
Beat me to Nicholas Cage Grin.

Every shade of wrong there is.

TroysMammy · 11/08/2020 20:29

Stephen Tomkinson as DCI Banks. I've got all the books and he is definitely not DCI Banks.

Mochudhu · 11/08/2020 20:30

Ditto Dominic Cooper, he always reminds me of the smug "I'm so good-looking, me" types at school. Bleurgh !

I loved the book Georgiana but can't face watching The Duchess because of the casting.

IceniSky · 11/08/2020 20:30

I thought Jennifer Lawrence did not match Katniss from the books but I think she rocked the role.

Hated Cage in Mandolin and Keanu in Dracula.
