In your opinion, which roles were miscast?

I’ll start off with musicals:

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables
Piers Brosnan in Mamma Mia

I don’t think their singing was strong enough. There were enough star names so I wished the producers had been braver and cast unknowns who could act and sing.

I hated how Andie McDowall in 4WAAF meant that in subsequent rom-coms an American became part of the formula. I don’t think she was the reason for the success of the film! Excellent writing and performances from the actors were the reasons.

For book adaptations of British novels, you would have thought the book had enough of a following to not have to go for superstar names.

Wondered if anybody noticed that the trailers and posters for “Me Before You” didn’t prominently feature the names of the leafs even though they had both starred in hit shows and films. I thought that was disrespectful.

I've not seen Me Before You because it looks like total nonsense but isn't the point about the marketing that it was a wildly successful JoJo Moyes novel, and that the publicity was geared to attract her readers to watch the film version? Rather than people who would, say, go and watch an Emilia Clarke film -- especially as her main role till then had been in Game of Thrones, and the crossover market from that to a chicklit weepie film adaptation wouldn't be huge?

AzraiL · 13/08/2020 12:49

Emma Watson as Belle. It was my favourite Disney animation and the live-action movie just ruined it for me.

AzraiL · 13/08/2020 13:01

@AuntieJoyce I agree, actually really enjoyed Daniel in Miracle Workers.

More casting yuck -

Kristen Scott Thomas in The English Patient

The whole cast of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Agree with Keanu in Dracula. I love him, but he was wrong for the part. Gary Oldman was cast perfectly. I'm ambivalent about Winona.

Keira Knightley in Atonement

Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors

Gwyneth Paltrow in Great Expectations

Gwyneth Paltrow in almost anything, really

I thought I was the only person alive who thought Meryl Streep wasn’t great in Mama Mia. The second one is sooooo much better because she’s hardly In it. She’s a fabulous actress but she’s just wrong in this.

The fella who plays Professor Bear in the recent Little women. He’s supposed to be a bit old and boring, but he’s smoking hot. I’ve always been a ‘Jo should have married Laurie’ girl, but he changed my mind.

Also agree about Florence Pugh playing 12 year old Amy. If I didn’t know the story, I would have been totally lost.

I’m adding Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings. She’s way too young to be the world weary widow. It makes Bradley Cooper look a bit creepy.

Iverunoutofnames · 13/08/2020 13:41

Has anyone mentioned Nicole Kidman. Especially when they cast her to play very young women (Australia, Cold Mountain). Her face is frozen, it doesn’t look young.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 13/08/2020 14:08

I agree about Titanic, but more because Leonardo looks about 8.

He's wonderful and a great actor but he looks like a toddler still.

I'm so glad someone else thinks Mrs Weasley is wrong. Again, love the bones of the woman but she does jazz hands acting. Educating Rita is one of my favourite films but she does it in that too. It's like a parody.

Pikachubaby · 13/08/2020 14:40

The only movie Nicole Kidman was very good in, is The Hours.

She was totally miscast in Moulin Rouge

I was sceptical about Renee as Bridget Jones but she totally won me over

Jack Black in the holiday: miscast!!! He is great in Jumanji, really funny and convincing. Made me laugh

Pikachubaby · 13/08/2020 14:41

and yes, Leonardo was too young for Kate W in Titanic

Hippofrog · 13/08/2020 14:50

I don’t get the whole Leo was too young for Kate thing, he’s older than her and they looked the same age in the film

Dozer · 13/08/2020 15:43

Jennifer Laurence in Joy - way too young to play the character and a classic example of Hollywood sexist/ageist casting.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 13/08/2020 16:42

For me, it isn't that Leo is too young, it's that he looks so young. Even now. It's that baby face cuteness. It's why really he is such a good actor I suppose, because he looks like he should be in some high school movie playing a teenager still.

Ardsallagh · 13/08/2020 16:48

No, she was bosomy and mature-looking (and though she's remarkably beautiful, there's quite a steely quality to her beauty, plus that red hair colouring/wig looked brassy and awful), and back then he had this eager baby-face thing going on and looked like an urchin crammed into a borrowed dinner suit. Which was probably the point in casting him, but didn't work with KW. Apart from anything else, she looked likely to be vastly more sexually experienced than him, so the whole 'Paint me like one of your French girls' thing was even more cringe-inducing.

northernsoulgirl · 13/08/2020 16:58

Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma, so tall and Californian looking, completely wrong and stuck out horribly

northernsoulgirl · 13/08/2020 17:12

Geraldine McEwan as Miss Marple, too got and twinkly

northernsoulgirl · 13/08/2020 17:18

Agree, Jane is supposed to be the beauty. It's Rosamund Pike in the Keira Knightly version and she is ravishing. In fact I think she doesn't get that much screen time for that reason!

pinata · 13/08/2020 17:41

Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton. Why does this guy think he can carry a lead role?

Out-sung and out-performed by literally every other person on that stage.

thebatman · 13/08/2020 17:44

Sorry if anyone has already mentioned this,( I'd be surprised if no one has tbh) I haven't read the whole thread yet, but Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor, she is fucking awful, just fucking awful, she brings nothing to the role. I didn't, don't, and will never want a female Doctor, but if they HAVE to, then please, someone who can do it some justice, Dame Judi, Carrie Coon, Olivia Williams, Eva Green. JW's poundshop David Tennant is unwatchable, the sooner The Doctor re-grows a pair, the better. Middle aged rant over.

Insertcreativenamehere · 13/08/2020 17:47

Sky in Mamma Mia - badly miscast - just wet, bad, terrible, unbelievable Hmm

PhoebeSnow · 13/08/2020 17:54

This is an old one but, Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Harris as Guinevere and Arthur in the film version of Camelot.. Julie Andrews had a wonderful voice and Richard Burton, who had huge charisma, were brilliant on the stage, according to my parents who saw them, so why cast Redgrave and Harris when neither of them could sing.
And show that Guinevere and Lancelot sleeping together as well, instead of an unconsummated love as in the stage versions. It could have been a brilliant film.

Renee Zellewegger in Miss Potter. The English accent just had me thinking she was bridget Jones the whole way through

MumsteadPlum · 13/08/2020 18:03

@AristotleAteMyHamster

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Reacher’s supposed to be 6’5”!
This! Love the Jack Reacher books but his height was fundamental to the plots and character in so many ways that choosing Tom Cruise was totally wrong. He's also so smarmy, he's like the antithesis of Jack Reacher in the books.
TrixieMixie · 13/08/2020 18:04

Keira Knightley in everything. That fakey smile she does irritates me to fuck. And Gwyneth Paltrow in everything too, because it's so obvious she just loves herself. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I think Margot Robbie is a brilliant young actress who is under-rated and incredibly versatile. I also adore Cate Blanchett. They never seem miscast, perhaps because they are such good actors.
