Can we take it Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources, Etre et Avoir and Amelie as read though?

My local video hire place has a huge selection of French films but I don't know where to start ...

OP posts:

Jean de Florette
Manon Des Source
Cyrano de Bergerac (have the soundtrack)
Etre et Avoir (dts1 has the same outlook as JoJo)
Amelie

Agree with all of the above. Also Three Colours Blue and Red but not White which I didn't like as much.

Can The Eighth Day be counted, really it is Belgian but French Belgian? And it stars Daniel Auteuil who I have had a thing for since La Reine Margot. Dh didn't get Hidden but I quite liked it.

Now which one have I forgotten?

Laudlaud A Very Long Engagement was adapted from the book by Sebastien Japrisot, worth a read.

mrsmalumbas · 10/05/2007 17:49

La Belle et la Bete directed by Jean Cocteau.

DaddyJ · 11/05/2007 12:10

anything starring Louis de Funes, particularly La Grande vadrouille

There was a French crime series on BBC4 some time ago called Spiral (Engrenages) -
atmospheric, sexy and entertaining.

For those who enjoy being challenged by their movies:
Man bites dog (Belgian), Baise moi.
No happy endings here but classics in their own right.

After watching those two films back to back, you will pine for Amelie!

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 14/12/2013 17:26

Marking place. My kinda thread!

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 14/12/2013 17:27

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 14/12/2013 17:30

Peanutbutter- la nuit américaine is one of my favourite films!!

PickledMoomin · 14/12/2013 17:33

Barbarian Invasions (les invasions barbares)

DandyDan · 28/12/2013 11:35

Little White Lies

Cooroo · 26/01/2014 01:25

Just watched Untouchable which is lovely and (for me) just the right side of sentimental.

EugenesAxe · 26/01/2014 01:46

I agree with Cyrano de Bergerac. Also fairly well like My Life As A Dog and The Green Ray (I actually know that one; Le Rayon Vert... or Verte).

Delicatessen is weird but funny. I've heard good things about La Haine.

TawdryTatou · 28/01/2014 08:51

Just watched Blue Is The Warmest Color and hated it.

Shame, as I loved the graphic novel.

La Vie En Rose is my favourite.

AmIGoingMad · 31/01/2014 15:15

Haven't had time to read all yet so sorry if I'm duplicating!

La Haine
Jeu d'enfant ( love me if you dare)
The Kristen Scott Thomas one I think its called je t'aime depuis toujours/longtemps
Auberge espagnole always makes me reminisce about my year abroad
I actually quite liked coco avant Chanel

There are loads more that I can't think of now!

Tryharder · 08/02/2014 22:50

Just seen Untouchable as well. It is fabulous and would recommend to all.

Lurleene · 08/02/2014 22:55

I agree about Untouchable, it's a great film.

I watched Delicacy this week, which stars Audrey Tatou, and it was a really sweet film. Don't want to put any spoilers so all I will say is it is an unconventional romance.

ohmymimi · 27/02/2014 20:05

Tatie Danielle - delicious.
All of Jacques Tati's films.
Plein Soleil
Le Samurai
Les Valseuses
À Bout due Souffle
Cyrano due Bergerac
My Girlfriend's Boyfriend
Hiroshima Mon Amour

ohmymimi · 27/02/2014 20:09

due=de, my french isn't wonderful, but not that bad.

Parliamo · 27/02/2014 20:19

This is making me nostalgic for my life before children, when I had sleep and time for wonderful things like films. There is going to be such a back log of films to watch when I finally am let out again.

Shame I dont live anywhere near an art house cinema any more. I also loved the hairdressers husband, in faanybody about all that directors films(name escapes me), and all the Bacri ones. And Daniel auteuil is still number one on my top five celebrity shag list, although it is a while since I've updated it aka had a drunken conversation in the pub with my mates.

Ahhh my student days....
