Can we take it Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources, Etre et Avoir and Amelie as read though?

My local video hire place has a huge selection of French films but I don't know where to start ...

the other one I can't remeber the titke of involves a mariied man (older) younger woman and his wofe finding out at one stage they in a high rise office block (probably could be any number of films)

NotQuiteCockney · 18/02/2007 17:31

Here is a page about it.

God, I remember seeing one that was set in the 18th century or so, and involved one male character raping a lesbian and converting her to heterosexuality, much to the dismay of her girlfriend. I always had such bad luck with French films.

lots from this list!

L'Homme du Train was a fairly recent lighthearted and fun film. With Johnny Halliday and Jean Rochefort.

Might be a nice contrast to La Haine which is an essential film, but sadly is a pretty gritty and accurate depiction of life in the Paris suburbs.

Tatties · 18/02/2007 17:42

Oh god, yes, avoid La Pianiste. I found it rather disturbing and very uncomfortable to watch.

Nikita
Once watched part of a Gerard Depardieu film where he and his mate were trying to track down some woman whose pants they'd stolen. He also breastfed from some woman on the metro! Anyone name that film?

Le Diner des Cons
The Closet

Is Tatie Danielle the one about the old lady? If so it's hilarious in that fabulously black humour that the french do so well - the other two I've mentioned are the same.

Oh goodness how could I forget Diva and Le Diner des Cons

Buckets, I think that has to be a Bertrand Blier film, possibly Les Valseuses

peanutbutter · 18/02/2007 18:47

Quite a few from others' lists and also a few of Francois Truffaut, namely Les Quatre Cents Coups; L'Homme qui Aimait Les Femmes, L'Histoire D'Adele H; La Nuit Americaine; le dernier metro.. i could go on .

I love FT's line in Close Encounters:

"Listen to me, Major Walsh; it's not scientific: it is an event sociological!"

wrinklytum · 18/02/2007 18:48

Cannot for life of me remember the title but it starred Juliet Binoche as a visually impaired homeless artist who "lived" on a Parisian bridge and fell in love with homeless bloke.....in fact if anyone knows the title it would stop me racking my brains all night now

Bucketsofdynomite · 18/02/2007 18:49

Ooh I saw The Chorus at Mum&Baby cinema club and that was lovely.

KTeePee · 18/02/2007 18:54

Full Moon in Paris (Les Nuits de la pleine lune)

But it is years since I last saw them so don't know if I would still feel the same about them.....
