Can we take it Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources, Etre et Avoir and Amelie as read though?

My local video hire place has a huge selection of French films but I don't know where to start ...

Tinker · 19/02/2007 14:07

Oh, that's reminded me of Conte d'Ete - caught the end once and have never seen the whole thing

Wilbur · 19/02/2007 14:22

Hiroshima Mon Amour is my absolute fave, and also Les Enfant Du Paradise and Orphee, the Umbrellas of Cherbourg from the old school French Films.

More new ones I love are Jean de Florette/Manon Des Source, Depardieu's Cyrano, La Reine Margot, that one with Vanessa Paradis as the Circus artist (is that the girl on the bridge?) and most things with Daniel Auteil, esp Romuald et Juliet.

But my absloute number one fave film (mostly) in the French language (but a Canadian film) is Jesus of Montreal. I was so in love with that actor, and it's such an amazing, amazing film.

Aefondkiss · 19/02/2007 21:34

Le Rayon Vert - surely it is in the worst ever french film category? imho anyway, if anyone wants it, I have the dvd it was free in the independent recently...

whinging, miserable, lonely (well no wonder), pretentious french woman fails to have a holiday, because no-one wants to go with her...

hidden was marginally better than this

Medea · 19/02/2007 21:38

I saw "L'Enfer" (Hell) on DVD last night and thought it was quite good.

Not entirely surprisingly, I liked the whole Medea theme.

franca70 · 19/02/2007 21:55

Another for The Horseman on the Roof. And le Bossu and D'artagnans Daughter.

I guess I like funny swash-buckling movies

Don't know if it's been mentioned already, and too tired to reread the whole thread - but just saw The Chorus and it's absolutely fab. DS loved it too.
