Can we take it Jean de Florette, Manon des Sources, Etre et Avoir and Amelie as read though?

My local video hire place has a huge selection of French films but I don't know where to start ...

Ne le dit a personne - tell noone is brilliant. I also liked 'les petits mouchoirs''. Lots of others but tell noone my all time fave. Actually if you like scary there is a great film called 'ils' them...

La règle du jeu (Jean Renoir)

À bout de souffle (Jean-Luc Godard)

Le bonheur (the one by Agnes Varda)

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 07/04/2014 07:19

YES YES to untouchable. Best film (Not just French) I saw last year.

vestandknickers · 07/04/2014 07:23

The Hairdresser's Husband is the most amazing, beautiful film about love.

NickyC123 · 15/07/2015 01:04

Untouchable is an amazing film. Also "the players" not sure of the French translation (this one is on Netflix)

Alicadabra · 15/07/2015 10:59

Les Ripoux is excellent. Lots of understated humour and starring Thierry Lhermitte (who I've always had a bit of a soft spot for) and Philippe Noiret, who is brilliant as ever.

Plotwise, it's a bit of a buddy movie (but done in the French way): an idealistic young country police recruit gets partnered with a cynical wine-swilling 'ripou' (i.e. bent cop).

City of the Lost Children -- surreal steampunk fantasy, a bit strange, but very nice

nigelslaterfan · 18/07/2015 22:11

Au Revoirs Les Enfants

applecatchers36 · 30/07/2015 21:49

Armour
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Agree with PP who said 'spiral' excellent French cop drama series, available on Netflicks

BagelwithButter · 01/08/2015 00:00

Jean de Florette/Manon Des Sources

La Vie en Rose is simply amazing and marvellous - Marion Cottillard deserved her Oscar and then some for her performance. I just don't know how she did it.

Rust & Bone, Two Days, One Night, both also with Marion Cottilard.

A Prophet by Jacques Audiard

Spiral in on my Netflix list, as is The Untouchables.

My daughter has discovered the films of Xavier Dolan and highly recommends "Mommy" (out earlier this year)

Mesrine Part 1 & 2 with Vincent Cassel are supposed to be very good

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 01/08/2015 20:44

Yes yes yes to Le Chateau de ma Mere and La Gloire de Mon Pere.

Is Cinema Paradiso French?

Ubik1 · 01/08/2015 20:51

Oh Betty Blue
God it's so beautiful and so sad. The soundtrack is beautiful. Heartbreaking.

And Le diner des cons is hilarious. I think it was remade by Hollywood but the French film is a scream.

Ubik1 · 01/08/2015 20:53

Cinema paradiso is Italian but one of the best films ever. The ending is such a misfire of joy and sadness, so bittersweet.
(Sorry - wine has been had...)

GoingToBedfordshire · 01/08/2015 20:58

Loved Mesrine Part 1 and Part 2 with Vincent Cassell. Based upon the true story of a French gangster in the 60s and 70s.

Rust and Bone is really powerful. I watched it having not read anything about it and it was amazing.

Days of Glory was very moving; North Africans fighting for the French army in WWII.

All fairly bleak choices!
