John Travolta
Bradley Walsh
Bonnie Langford

Now don't laugh! Sometimes you see someone from when you were much younger and then realise that they are REALLY bloody good actors. What would be your nominations?

David Tennant. Loved how effortlessly he played Kilgrave in Jessica Jones.
And I totally agree with Rory Kinnear. His Frankensteins Monster in Penny Dreadful is brilliant.
Not forgetting Rik Mayall. For all the farty Bottom jokes and slapstick he could really play a great sympathetic character.

SapphireStrange · 09/06/2016 13:04

That reminds me, I don't really rate David Tennant generally [heretic], but I thought he was excellent in Broadchurch.

Michael Douglas. Wonder Boys is brilliant and Falling Down and The Game are very good. It's just that he has a bad public image and is remembered for Basic Instinct. I like him in Traffic, though it's a small role. Catherine Zeta Jones is also good in that - but then everyone is.

I think poor public image is the reason why people name Oscar winners. I named Tom Cruise because people hate him and it blinds them to acting ability. I loathed him for ages and denied he was any good because I associated him with Top Gun. Then I saw Interview With The Vampire and it comes alive when he's on screen. He's so good at being menacing - like in Collateral and Magnolia. Maybe it's not that much of a stretch for him Wink

True Detective series 2 was a bit shit but the theme music was awesome

Nevermind.

The Last Samurai was good too (also had Billy Connolly acting very well).

I really like Sally Hawkins. She blew me away in the film "Happy.Go Lucky" , she was mesmerising, so I started looking out for her.

She's been in films as the generic kooky mother, like Paddington, but she didn't have the chance to do anywhere near a star turn to earn the recognition I think she deserves.

That's why I'm nominating her as an "unexpectedly" good actress.

Surprisingly good actors.

Owen Wilson was in Behind Enemy Lines if you want to see him in something different from his usual goofball appearances.
www.imdb.com/title/tt0159273/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_46

Whilst he looks like a hair model in the film it does show his more serious side. Vladimir Mashkov in the film is excellent.

I still can't get my head around anyone thinking Aniston is any good!

Matt Dillon was a superb actor when he first started out. Rumblefish and The Outsiders he was magnificent. He has made a few food films since but he just hasn't had the material that would have made him a mega star and some of the films he has been in are utter crap.

Michael Caine is another one. He's made some crappy films. When someone asked him if he'd seen Jaws: The Revenge he said no, but he'd seen the house in the South of France it had built.

I love him in The Man Who Would Be King and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, he's great in Zulu, The Ipcress File and The Italian Job and Harry Brown is seriously underrated probably because it's a low-budget revenge fantasy.

He's won an Oscar too.

squoosh · 09/06/2016 13:47

I still can't get my head around anyone thinking Aniston is any good!

I think she's got very good comic timing but like a lot of actors she tends to turn in the same performance over and over again. One film she was excellent in though was The Good Girl a film she starred in with Jake Gylenhaal (sp?). She completely quashed all her trademark Aniston-isms.

squoosh · 09/06/2016 13:50

Harry Brown is seriously underrated probably because it's a low-budget revenge fantasy.

I saw that film referred to as 'Daily Mail porn' Grin

limitedperiodonly · 09/06/2016 13:54

It is, but that's not to say the Daily Mail can't be enjoyable sometimes

squoosh · 09/06/2016 13:56

V true!

limitedperiodonly · 09/06/2016 13:57

Or that there aren't estates where decent people are afraid to walk but still have to live. Like I said, it's a revenge fantasy.

They were going to cast Paul Newman and Robert Redford in The Man Who Would Be King squoosh. How would that have worked Shock They were too expensive and Connery and Caine got it because they were washed up and cheap Grin

dustarr73 · 09/06/2016 14:07

I liked Aniston in Derailed with Clive Owens and Bruce Almighty and Meet the Millers.Otherwise i find her a bit samey.

squoosh · 09/06/2016 14:07

Didn't Newman and Redford play Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the two guys in The Sting? I think The Man Who Would Be King would have been pushing their onscreen pairing too far!

limitedperiodonly · 09/06/2016 14:27

It was apparently because it was directed by John Huston who was looking at a number of American actors. Paul Newman was said to have suggested Connery and Caine when he turned it down. It's on IMDB, so it must be true.

DaleMaily · 09/06/2016 14:47

sapphire have you seen In Bruges? Ralph Fiennes is brilliant, again against type as an Essex gangster. Really funny.

squoosh · 09/06/2016 14:52

I LOVE In Bruges! Ralph (we're on first name terms) is amazing in that. As is Brendan Gleeson.

'Leave my kids fucking out of it! What have they done? You fucking retract that bit about my cunt fucking kids!'

TinklyLittleLaugh · 09/06/2016 15:09

I actually think Clooney is pretty good.

And yes to Jennifer Lawrence, she is utterly believable in the Hunger Games.

I also think Alfie Allen does a fine turn in GOT. I don't know why that is surprising, maybe because he is celeb offspring/sibling. Many of the young actors on GOT are a bit rubbish.

MrsJayy · 09/06/2016 15:26

I love Billy Connoly in films we have a DVD called the man who sued God he is brilliant in it .

MrsJayy · 09/06/2016 15:28

i dont watch but They just need any actor on Got because they just seem to kill them all DD says oh he used to be in GoT but they are dead now Grin

DaleMaily · 09/06/2016 16:26

I'm sure you are squoosh Wink

He is so great! Actually Colin Farrell is quite good in it too.

DaleMaily · 09/06/2016 16:32

I'm just YTing clips now. I'd forgotten about the shootout!

Nataleejah · 09/06/2016 16:46

Nobody mentioned Ron Perlman yet. I'm in love with him. Even in shittiest films he did, he's something special.
