9 year old 'chick-flick' movies for my DD's sleepover?

PavlovtheCat · 22/06/2015 23:06

My DD is about to turn 9. She is having a sleepover with 3 other female friends. We are doing nails, having pizza, and she wants to sit and watch 'romantic' films with her friends til the wee hours snuggled under duvets eating popcorn. (romantic is how she described it, I think she wants films about love and boys and best friends and probably pets. I am happy to skip over the love and boys bit, but open to ideas!

I have no idea what to get for them to watch, so suggestions are gratefully received.

It features some wholesome romance but it's mainly about female friendship.

And a magic pair of jeans.

TigerWhoCameForGin · 22/06/2015 23:38

Camp Rock!

BertrandRussell · 22/06/2015 23:39

God, I must be a boring old fart- Mean Girls for 9 year olds? Really???????

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/06/2015 23:41

Tuck Everlasting is a very sweet film.

bruffin · 22/06/2015 23:44

Clueless is a bit old for 9 year olds.
Grease has the scene in the vack ofbthe car when the condom breaks.

Some good ones here - have to cyber high five whoever said Slipper and the Rose :D

My immediate thoughts were Never Been Kissed and 10 Things I Hate About You...but they do mention sex and may be better for early teens really.

Otherwise mentioned & a few more:
The Princess Bride -YES
Loved Return to Oz at that age; no romance though
Adventures in Babysitting - hilarious but she does get mistaken for a centrefold
The Goonies
Stardust - mega yes
Sound of Music
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Enchanted and Ever After both cool
Anne of Green Gables if you have time! Awesome romance in that one.

Secret Life of Bees

EugenesAxe · 22/06/2015 23:59

Actually just remembered Adventures in Babysitting contains the line 'Don't fuck, with the Lords of Steel', so strike that.

Also I have no idea what it was about but I watched a film called The Gnome Mobile obsessively around that age. I remember a purple fairy dress; it probably involved love, as well as Dudley Moore.

SomethingOnce · 23/06/2015 00:02

Labyrinth.

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/06/2015 00:04

Bend It Like Beckham? Don't think it contains any sexual content.

EugenesAxe · 23/06/2015 00:04

Hmm. Just Googled and Dudley Moore does not feature. Must have been a later incorrect name/face transplant I made in my head.

Apparently the kids from Mary Poppins are in it... can't remember a thing!

Butterflywings168 · 23/06/2015 00:08

The Truth about Cats and Dogs Smile 'grown-up' rom-com but nothing explicit, and has a good message for girls about appearance not being important in finding love Smile

YesThisIsMe · 23/06/2015 00:08

Bear in mind that this is a ninth birthday - at the time of writing this girl is 8. And the other girls' parents may have more restrictive views on films. I'd really aim PG rather than 12.

Butterflywings168 · 23/06/2015 00:12

Also cute pets Grin

Redglitter · 23/06/2015 00:16

I love Ella Enchanted (so do my nieces which is probably slightly more relevant )
both the Princess Diaries films are good for that age too

Athenaviolet · 23/06/2015 00:34

Curly sue
The wedding singer/50 first dates
Beethoven
Look who's talking
Honey I shrunk the kids
Mona Lisa smile
The worst witch

bruffin · 23/06/2015 01:19

Hairspray

Butterflywings168 · 23/06/2015 02:02

Ooh sorry didn't realise I was talking to naice pearl clutching brigade, I mean Bambi, oh wait, no his mum dying might upset the little darlings...shouldn't it be an 18.
FFS 9yo can look up all kinds of things on the Internet. It was NOT a phone sex scene, it was a montage where there were VERY VEILED references at one point to masturbation which would go over the kids' heads! No other references to sex!
But hey, I must be a freak who shouldn't be allowed near DC Hmm
