9 year old 'chick-flick' movies for my DD's sleepover?

PavlovtheCat · 22/06/2015 23:06

My DD is about to turn 9. She is having a sleepover with 3 other female friends. We are doing nails, having pizza, and she wants to sit and watch 'romantic' films with her friends til the wee hours snuggled under duvets eating popcorn. (romantic is how she described it, I think she wants films about love and boys and best friends and probably pets. I am happy to skip over the love and boys bit, but open to ideas!

I have no idea what to get for them to watch, so suggestions are gratefully received.

Yours mine and ours
Freaky Friday
Prom
Ice princess
The swan princess
Pusdsey the dog movie
Thumbelina
Homeward bound

On Netflix for their age or under - these are the ones that I thought fit the brief - you can sign up to a 1 month free trial watch unlimited and cancel with no fee Grin Cheap sleepover! You can also sign in on Netflix as a child so it won't show any adult content and they can press play all day (and night) Smile

Agree, I have been UNAMUSED at my dcs watching non-pG films at friends' houses. I am well aware of what they can watch online, all the more reason to send out a message of what IS acceptable.

Heathers is not.

Pitch Perfect I'd let my dd, 10, watch but not her friends unless I had mothers' express permission.

School of Rock, perfect. Some innuendo but above kids' heads.

mammabmamma · 23/06/2015 10:34

Sgtmajormummy · 23/06/2015 11:18

If you're having friends for a sleepover, you need to be responsible, I think. Some titles that are fun and mine (young 9 yearold) loves are:
Matilda
Despicable Me 1 and 2
Hotel Transylvania
Arthur Christmas (all year round!)

Tweezertastic · 23/06/2015 11:33

Hotel for dogs?

Fudgeface123 · 23/06/2015 11:53

Can't actually believe some of these suggestions, I don't have kids but if I did have one of that age they would NOT be watching

Clueless
Heathers
Jaws
Mean Girls
50 First Dates
The Wedding Singer

Am also not sure I'd be showing romance films really, there's plenty of time for that, I'd be showing funny stuff like

Despicable Me
Any animal related films - Cats & Dogs is a good one
Zoo Keeper

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/06/2015 11:59

Solaris
Das Boot
Lost in Translation
Picnic at Hanging Rock

BertrandRussell · 23/06/2015 12:02

Pan's Labyrinth
Carrie
Texas Chain Saw Massacre
Sawshank Redemption

TeenAndTween · 23/06/2015 12:03

Nothing above a PG rating

Even if you are happy for a 12A, some other parents may not be. It saves embarrassment all round if you stick to age ratings for parties.

(And yet again I am amazed at people suggesting 15 rated films for a 9 year old's party. Even if you think it's OK for your child, what would possess you to pick it for a party!)

bruffin · 23/06/2015 12:08

Mitzy and Betrand

We went to see The Girl with a Dragon Tatto (18 and full of very explicit violence] and there was a tiny little girl sitting in the seat in front of us. Didnt realise until the end when she skipped down the steps holding her mums hand Shock.

Sorry I haven't replied. Didn't expect so many responses, and been working all day. Going to read through them now. thank you all.

Agree with poster that I'll keep it within PG ratings. I'll be watching with them, or at least keeping an eye. Although, the children coming have seen more scary films than my DD Grin

bruffin that's insane Shock DD has watched one Harry Potter, with a friend and their parents (they asked first if it was ok). She has not watched anything like the Hobbit yet, but will watch that with her soon as she'll like it. We've been quite protective over her, but also, her brother is little so many films she is ok to watch would not be ok for him.

She also watched the Lemony Snicket film, which I thought was well scary for her, but she watched it with Daddy on a day off sick from school so DS didn't watch it. She loved it.

yesthisisme I LOVE Enchanted! We have watched it a few times now Grin

PavlovtheCat · 23/06/2015 15:05

abu DD loves Star Wars, as does one of those coming over, but the other two are very much NOT into that kind of thing.

We Bought a Zoo is about the zoo near us! topical Grin

So many great ideas. I would never have known where to start, so great choices, thank you. I have Netflix, so will pick one or two from there, then go buy one for them/buy it on iTunes.

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 23/06/2015 15:08

Freaky Friday and Parent Trap both good choices, also Lizzie Maguire and Harriet the Spy (the last 2 are on Netflix, not sure about the other 2)

PavlovtheCat · 23/06/2015 15:09

jazz good idea about letting them choose on Netflix. DD and DS have their own Username with child only settings. I will go in and make sure it's set for their age (PG and U), and them they could have free reign to some extent. DD would LOVE that!

OP posts:
PavlovtheCat · 23/06/2015 15:11

fudge tbf, I think DD was more getting at 'girly' but used the word romantic, although she is starting to show an interest in boys Shock too young, slow down Shock

One tip with sleepovers parties.. Feed them the cake and sugar rush stuff early so they have enough time to get it out their systems before bed! Move onto the popcorn/ crisps later snack wise as wont make the crazy ones run!

Any chance you live near a park/ beach? At that age my parents would let party sleepovers come over, we would eat dinner around 6pm, then all go for an hour play along beach or in woods before heading back for hot chocolate/ popcorn and films ( I now realise this was to make sure we were all semi worn out)

Loveleopardprint · 23/06/2015 15:15

Monte Carlo with Selena Gomez is good for that age. It is a PG.
