9 year old 'chick-flick' movies for my DD's sleepover?

PavlovtheCat · 22/06/2015 23:06

My DD is about to turn 9. She is having a sleepover with 3 other female friends. We are doing nails, having pizza, and she wants to sit and watch 'romantic' films with her friends til the wee hours snuggled under duvets eating popcorn. (romantic is how she described it, I think she wants films about love and boys and best friends and probably pets. I am happy to skip over the love and boys bit, but open to ideas!

I have no idea what to get for them to watch, so suggestions are gratefully received.

I love the sound of Sisterhood and the Travelling Pants Grin Musicals are also good. Mama Mia is a good one as the girls love singing.

Having read through, and comments/discussion around age appropriateness. My thoughts are definitely in the 'pearl clutching brigade' camp, if that has to be how it's described.

I am happy, with mine and DH's guidance, to start tentatively watching films that are 12 rated with DD, if we feel they are good for her to watch overall, are present to address anything that is too adult/explain/fast-forward. But there is no rush for these things.

But, there is no way I will place myself in the position of making those types of decisions for the other children, whether or not they watch more 'adult' based films themselves with their own families. There are, clearly, plenty of movies that will be fun that are PG, that they won't have watched, so there is no need to venture out of any comfort zones during the sleepover. I want it to be fun, relaxed, full of laughter, with no come-backs. I would also like to not have to sit with them for the entire evening, but to be able to pop in and out checking on them.

There is one film DD loved, can't remember the name, awful film, but DD loved it, about a gymnast who was training another gymnast, about overcoming fear, and the trainer had some issues with a disabled gymnast judge, and it was all very nice and lovely and about friendship and working hard, with a little bit of sweetheart but no actual romance. Australian I think. That kind of thing is what I think she is after too. Any of those suggestions fit with that?

I am going to go take a look at Netflix and some of those suggestions below, and some others in google, to get an idea.

art we do live near a beach actually! and a good park or two. We are going to Pizza hut after school, for pizza, ice cream factory, fizz. Then a run in the park would probably be good for half hour. DD wants their nails done, hair done up prettily by me and some make-up. I never let her wear make-up and am Hmm about that, but will do their nails and hair in plaits or something (no crimping, would be scared of singeing their hair, and no crimpers here).

I won't do beach, as I get nervous around water with other people's children, unless their parents are with them too. I don't know their swimming ability and I have a disability that means if they were to go in the water (I wouldn't let them, but you never can tell what happens if the tide is in) I won't necessarily be fast enough to get them. See, proper Pearl Clutcher here Grin

I would probably not do the make up tbh for 8/9 year olds.

MappingTheMind · 23/06/2015 17:06

Dolphin Tale sounds like her cup of tea. Or after Willy 3. Both have gentle "crush" story lines while focusing on saving animals and fighting nasty corporates.

MappingTheMind · 23/06/2015 17:06

After Willy 3 should read Free Willy 3!

Stardust. Also, less romance but for the plucky girl and flawed adults: Nim's Island.

dancestomyowntune · 23/06/2015 18:55

Pavlov we are also near the zoo that "we bought a zoo" is about! Fab film, a shame they americanised it though.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 23/06/2015 19:46

willy 3 sounds slightly too old Grin bless you pavlov sounds a great night, can I come I'm a plymouth lassie so suspect you are near Smile make up could be fun as just a one night party thing but do go to Primark for the nail goodies and stuff for a proper girls night in, make your own honey face masks etc etc.... ahhh memories.

mavienrose · 23/06/2015 22:33

Hotel for Dogs goes down well with my 9 yr old.

PavlovtheCat · 24/06/2015 08:48

stepaway oops I won't ever make a good undercover cop will I? Grin have we met? in RL?

Dear Dumb Diaries - any ideas about that? DD has said this morning she would like to watch this. DH has reminded me we have watched several of the Princess Diaries. He loved those himself Grin. Could always watch again.

I used to love 'now and then' bought it on DVD to watch with my DD (now 12.5) I out it on when she had two friends sleeping over when they were 10 ish they are all relatively streetwise and grown up for their age but it was too much for them. Talking about boobs, sex, early teens looking at boys skinny dipping. They asked to turn it off as it was embarrassing Smile I wasn't really watching it with them so it wasn't me being there that embarrassed them.
Alexander the really terrible...(can't remember the long bit in the middle)... Day is great funny, thought provoking, little bit of romance.
Parent trap
Mamma Mia (some sex suggestion but very very mild and they probably wouldn't notice)

TheEndOfTheWorldAsIKnowIt · 24/06/2015 09:49

Re to Dolphin tale 1&2
Hotel for dogs
Marmaduke
Dd loved home alone at that age
Night at the museum

IPlayBass · 24/06/2015 09:54

I came on to say Hotel for Dogs and see the poster above me suggested it! Really lovely film and has all your dd's requirements. Enchanted is also great and again fits all her requirements.

CantBrainToday · 24/06/2015 09:54

Stuff like High School Musical, Teen Beach Movie, Freaky Friday, Lizzie Maguire, Princess Diaries, Ella Enchanted, Enchanted, Cinderella, Princess Bride.

Most of these are on Netflix.

The Princess Bride is my favourite movie, ever.

CantBrainToday · 24/06/2015 09:58

The best thing is to LOOK UP REVIEWS to check for content and DON'T GO ABOVE A PG. This will save you from grief from other parents and unexpected freakouts. Keeping to chick flicks will also help minimise freak outs. My 8 yo is uber sensitive and if she watched a 12 at someone elses house I would be livid (and you'd prob have her crying all night...)

Wannabestepfordwife · 24/06/2015 10:08

Freaky Friday
Parent trap
Nancy Drew
Maid in Manhattan
Cinderella story
Spy kids
High school musical
Hannah Montana

Tessbrookes · 24/06/2015 10:09

Heathers is an 18 and it makes good points about friendships and schools which I think is suitable for some 9yos.

Heathers? For a 9 year old?! Farking hell, what are you on?!
Bloody loved that film in my teens (Christian Slater, love yoooo Grin )
but no way is it suitable for a 9 year old!
Girl desperate to fit in so teams up with the mean girls (the Heathers), starts to go out with Mr mean and moody loner. Plots and kills off one and each of the Heathers. Making out they're all suicides. One by mixing her a poison drink and watching her drink it, and can't remember the rest of the ways to kill as not seen for a while.
Not to mention two of the high school jocks they kill off and frame them to be gay and that's why they did it.
Lots of charming talk for 9 year olds too like "suck my dick".
Yeah, great film for a 9 year old. Confused Hmm

Tessbrookes · 24/06/2015 10:14

Any hoo, sensible suggestions for 9 year olds:

Freaky Friday (both versions are great but the Lindsey Lohan remake one will probably go down best)
Big!
Splash
Back To The Future
E.T
Honey I Shrunk The Kids

Dancergirl · 24/06/2015 10:15

Mrs Doubtfire

MyLegIsHaunted · 24/06/2015 10:20

My DD is 8 and her favourite films at the moment are:
Princess Diaries
Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer
Ice Princess
Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day
Blended (probably inappropriate for a party though, mentions masterbation and periods and 'bagina's' (DD's fav part, lol)
Matilda

I'm not sure if this one is available in the UK yet or not but Paper Planes is BRILLIANT. It has the boy from Alexander in it, and it's a lovely Australian film. We absolutely adored it, a really lovely message and touch of childhood romance. It's available to rent on Australian iTunes not sure about anywhere else yet.
Our school is screening it for our K-6 outdoor movie night in October with a paper plane throwing competition Smile

Wannabestepfordwife · 24/06/2015 10:23

The Goonies
what a girl wants

MyLegIsHaunted · 24/06/2015 10:24

Also Night at the Museum trilogy, we loved those Smile

And thank you to the posters that said Worst Witch, I had no idea there was a movie! DD has just finished book 3 in the series so she'll be stoked Smile

Mulligrubs · 24/06/2015 10:24

A lot of the Hilary Duff and Selena Gomez Disney filme are great -

Princess Protection Program
A Cinderella Story
So Undercover

(basically all Disney Channel TV movies!)

Then as others have said-
13 Going on 30
Princess Diaries
Aquamarine
High Schook School Musical
Ella Enchanted

iamnotaponceyloudperson · 24/06/2015 10:31

We're ripping an idea of another poster on another thread and getting Mamma Mia for DD's similar party and getting the girls feather boas to dance around with.
