9 year old 'chick-flick' movies for my DD's sleepover?

PavlovtheCat · 22/06/2015 23:06

My DD is about to turn 9. She is having a sleepover with 3 other female friends. We are doing nails, having pizza, and she wants to sit and watch 'romantic' films with her friends til the wee hours snuggled under duvets eating popcorn. (romantic is how she described it, I think she wants films about love and boys and best friends and probably pets. I am happy to skip over the love and boys bit, but open to ideas!

I have no idea what to get for them to watch, so suggestions are gratefully received.

It had a 15 rating, hardly suitable for 8 or 9 year olds

Athenaviolet · 23/06/2015 07:18

I'd watched loads of 15 or 18 rated films by the time I was 9.

I don't think parents were so precious in the 80s.

It's ironic-they are actually exposed to much worse now. My 10yo was shown porn on an iPod at a 10th birthday party.

Milliways · 23/06/2015 07:30

Fly Away Home was my DDs favourite at that age.
We Bought a Zoo is lovely and has young love.

YesThisIsMe · 23/06/2015 07:36

Yes loads of things were acceptable in the eighties - there's even a song about it. But the fact remains that if you're entertaining other people's DC it's probably a good idea to play it safe and pick one of the many perfectly good PG options rather than risk pissing off someone else's parent. The issue that in two years time they'll all be watching "two girls one cup" on their phones (one child in year 6 was giving the other children a plot summary of that at DS's school) is not today's problem.

Bonsoir · 23/06/2015 07:39

Beverly Hills Chihuahua is a great girlie sleepover movie!

BertrandRussell · 23/06/2015 07:42

"I'd watched loads of 15 or 18 rated films by the time I was 9."

And this was a good thing because..?

EugenesAxe · 23/06/2015 07:44

I also thought about The Truth About Cats and Dogs but immediately dismissed when I remembered the phone sex scene! I can't believe people would think that was acceptable to show to other people's 9yo children; as YesThisIs said you'd play it safe with a PG. Forgot Worst Witch - great suggestion.

It's also Lords of Hell, not Steel (as someone will undoubtedly correct me).

meandjulio · 23/06/2015 07:45

Kids do all sorts of things. If you showed my 9-year-old a 15 film without clearing it with me, I wouldn't clutch my pearls, I'd bloody clutch yours so you know you'd been clutched.

Idontseeanydragons · 23/06/2015 07:55

Agree with We Bought A Zoo, very cute and funny film Smile

Just because 9 year olds can watch inappropriate things on the internet or in films doesn't mean that we should be helping them - and it doesn't make anyone boring or pearl clutching! Odd idea to think that just because one child has porn on his computer all parents should let their kids watch what they want.

Athenaviolet · 23/06/2015 07:58

Jaws was a pg but that's terrifying and I certainly wouldn't show it to a 9yo.

Imo classifications are a loose guide and I make viewing decisions based on the individual child.

Lots of 15s and 18s are suitable for some 9yos.

At a party I'd be more cautious though.

Romy and Michelle's high school reunion is good.

Athenaviolet · 23/06/2015 08:01

Trust me primary aged kids showing each other porn on their smartphones in the playground is not a rare occurence Sad.

This generation of parents are sticking their heads in the sand and are totally naive as to what very young DCs are routinely exposed to.

If you have DCs this age you need to talk to them about it.

dancestomyowntune · 23/06/2015 08:03

We bought a zoo is a fabulous film and very appropriate for younger audiences.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 23/06/2015 08:07

Now and Then. PG. Majority of film is a group of young girls and their antics. Dd loved this one.

YesThisIsMe · 23/06/2015 08:07

It's not even as if the DC have a preference. If DD was saying "I desperately want to watch Bridesmaids (or Pitch Perfect or whatever) because all the other girls at school talk about it and all my BFFs at the party want to see it and No Other Film Will Do" then you'd need to have a serious think. But given that she's got no preference and The Princess Diaries/Enchanted/We Bought a Zoo are right there on the metaphorical shelf, it's a no brainer.

VeryVeryDarkGrey · 23/06/2015 08:08

Gladiator for 9 year olds?? They'll be bored stiff! I would second 13 going on 30

DorothyL · 23/06/2015 08:08

Please name an 18 rated film that is suitable for a 9 year old!

I'd go for High School Musical, perfect choice - romance but very very safe, and great songs!

BertrandRussell · 23/06/2015 08:11

"This generation of parents are sticking their heads in the sand and are totally naive as to what very young DCs are routinely exposed to."

Bollocks.

Lagoonablue · 23/06/2015 08:12

Annie. The recent one is good fun. Annie is cool and streetwise and though it's still a bit schmaltzy it's entertaining. New York looks amazing in it too.

Kensi · 23/06/2015 08:15

Princess diaries
Cinderella story
Sleepover
High school musical
Penelope

Personally I would go with High school musical or/and The Princess Diaries.

Lagoonablue · 23/06/2015 08:22

Clueless.

MrsKitty · 23/06/2015 08:22

alicedoesnt Yes! 'Now and Then' - I've been trying to think of that one all morning... I could picture the actresses but not their names or the film!

Dunston Checks in

MappingTheMind · 23/06/2015 08:30

My daughter is this age and bright and pretty street wise but movies like Mean Girls and Legally Blonde would bore her as she's not into that teenage dynamic yet.

She loves:
The Parent Trap
Mama Mia
Annie (the new one)
Free willie 1-3
Dolphin Tale
We Bought a Zoo

broomy123 · 23/06/2015 08:32

Another vote for now and then! Loved that film and nothing unsuitable for a 9 year old. Although as some would be 8 maybe go for a princess bride type thing
