I had a date with a drop dead gorgeous rock climber, I was so excited and couldn't wait to meet him as he seemed a great laugh when I met him in a pub the night before.
I've got to say I've never been so bored in all my life, he talked about himself and never asked me a thing! It's so true that beauty is from within. The man I married is funny and great company thank goodness!!

sharond101 · 16/06/2015 22:48

Not seen the movie. My first date (now my DH) was to McDonalds where we both now realise neither of us ever went to or liked but thought it would be the "cool" place to go that the other would enjoy! We were 15 btw so fine dining wasn't our scene.

Laflouder · 17/06/2015 12:38

My first date with James was when we were both students. We didn't have much money so we chose a film to watch back at my house. Despite the rest of the residents thoughtfully making themselves scarce for the evening, my strange housemate decided to join us and spent the evening cutting his toenails while sitting next to us on the sofa!! It can't have been that bad though - I've been married to James for 9 years now!

I started working as a barmaid in central London in November 1999. This guy came in and I thought he was gorgeous. The landlord told me that he came in most nights at 6pm. I waited every night for most of November and all of December. He never came in, and every night I was despondent by 7, desolate by 9.

Roll around millennium NY Eve. Both of us had plans to be elsewhere. They both fell through. We both ended up in the pub I worked at where my boss and his girlfriend engineered a meeting. One of our regulars was the caretaker at the Adelphi Building, right on the Thames, opposite the London Eye (or Millenium Wheel as it was called then). They were refurbishing the 20th floor, it was gutted and empty and they allowed the caretaker a party there. It was amazing, we were right at the centre of the action, throwing down balloons for the crowd on the embankment to play with, watching the fireworks, listening to Big Ben ring in the new Millenium.

Eventually we left together, as we were leaving an elderly cockney lady walked up and said 'She's a nice girl, you're a beautiful couple, look after her' then she gave us a bottle of champagne to take with us. We couldn't get a bus home so we walked back to Hackney swigging champagne, talking and laughing.

15 years and one little boy later, it's still a fantastic memory.

I got to the end of a third date... all went well until he went in for the kiss... and licked my face. I mean really licked, like a dog! The entire bottom has of my face was thick with slobber...

patricia2612 · 18/06/2015 07:08

I once met up with a guy on the internet. I had no idea what he looked like but he was so nice to talk to that I thought I'd give it a go when I was younger and braver. When I turned up, he was wearing this horrible ankle length leather coat and was shorter than me and I'm 5ft3!
He took us to the pub where he proceeded to the bar. He told the lady we'd have a coke to which I said "oh no, do you mind if I have something else?" and he responded "oh, the coke is for me. Would you mind ordering your own drink and paying for it as I only have £5 to last me until the end of the week". I could have just curled up right there and then. The "date" finished promptly as you can imagine with me texting my friend to call me and pretend I had to leave due to an emergency. I never saw him again!!!!

sputnicki63 · 18/06/2015 12:27

I haven't seen Man Up but my best first dates have all been cinema trips. If you can't share a good film together then give up!

gazzalw · 18/06/2015 17:37

Well my best first date was with the woman who is now my wife of fifteen years... A kind of blind date set up by our mutual friends. She fought hard to get for all of a week before capitulating to my charms Wink.

First film we saw together was Toy Story - she's more of an indie/arthouse movie type so compromise was on the cards. And we're still going to see all those animated films together so many years down the line, but now with our DCs.

I'm not always convinced that the cinema is the best place for a first date though - not unless there's a simmering chemistry there....Or you've already determined that you share a love of the same film genres...

DW still tells the tale of being taken to see Jurassic Park on a first date - she wasn't over enamoured of the guy beforehand but his choice of film signalled that there would be no more dates for them!

Annbunce · 18/06/2015 21:11

Not seen Man Up yet, but planning on soon.

A triple date was my first date, 3 couples at the cinema. Been with him nearly 25 years now !!!

JoCar72 · 19/06/2015 11:39

I haven't seen the Film yet but I love Simon Pegg's 'romantic' comedies. I think his face just fits their style? Have to say though I was one of the very few of my friends and family who actually enjoyed 'Run Fat Boy Run' so I don't know what that says about my sense of humour?

As for dates, I think you have to approach them with a little more fun and less expectation. If you can't laugh together at similar things I wouldn't say the future would be too bright as a long term couple? ;)

Anononooo · 19/06/2015 21:37

A friend of a friend was in the foreign city where we both happened to be living. I thought he was really good looking. I was into punk and he had a fabulous dyed Mohican. He was American, so had a cute accent. Assumed he was like my anarcho punky friends. So we went on a date, out for a drink, and as the evening transpired it turned out he was utterly, nastily right wing, like semi-fascist, and me being Jewish and Lefty just couldn't take it. Had to run at a certain point.

Weirdly a very similar thing happened again when I was visiting a friend in Budapest. Except this time I could barely speak a word to the guy as he didn't speak much English and me little Madyar. I worked it out slowly, not before I had got, ahem, pretty close.

Another time I was in a foreign city and just went home with a very odd guy. I stayed the night...he was very brooding. I remember seeing a woman's stuff there. It was ChristmasEve. She was clearly off home. Still feel bad about that...

kelandab · 19/06/2015 21:49

I'm yet to see it! My most memorable, and nearly worst days was a valentines where my then boyfriend booked the wrong restaurant - one of the same name over 200 miles away & we ended up in a fast food restaurant instead

galadrial · 21/06/2015 14:10

Man Up is a British Rom-Com, starring Simon Pegg and Lake Bell. Although I like Simon Pegg I did not think that this film was that good. There were some very amusing moments and it was quite enjoyable. Lake Bell was also good in her role as Nancy, she played the charecter in a fun way and played a British person quite well. This film shows how many things can and do go wrong and a blind date, (enough to put you off for life, I should think). I think overall the two leads played well againt each othe, but felt the storyline was weak and quite predictable. However on a more positive note, showcased London very well and loved the soundtrack to this film lots of great songs.

HawkEyeTheNoo · 21/06/2015 14:15

I went on a first date to an Italian restaurant, I love pasta and ordered the seafood spaghetti, I was busy chatting away and stuffing my face and noticed my date had gone quiet, I looked up to see his face and white shirt covered in the tomato sauce from my spaghetti!! He was not impressed and I apologised profusely and tried to be a bit more dignified in my eating. After the meal we were going to a bar and he said he couldn't go with his shirt all stained so we should call it a night. When I got home I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror when washing my hands, my face was TOTALLY covered in tomato splatters!!! I was mortified... I never heard from him again Hmm

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 21/06/2015 16:51

Actually, I really liked the film, thought it was very light hearted entertainment, laughed a lot and was a bit surprised as I was not expecting to like it or that it would be so romantic. rubbish plot really but fun.

compy99 · 21/06/2015 21:43

no I haven't seen it, can;t get to the cinema so need to wait until on PPV or DVD, I usually like things Simon Pegg does, so will look out for it.

BellaOfTheBalls · 21/06/2015 23:08

I haven't seen the film but I probably will - Simon Pegg is a favourite.

Memorable first date? I'd been chatting to someone I met online for a long time. We finally sorted out a date. We went lunch, where we both ate rather a lot, although I cannot for the life of me remember where we ate, then to an art gallery in Manchester. We wandered around all these gorgeous paintings, he bought me a print of my favourite one in the gift shop, we then went to the cafe for a cup of tea and my date ordered an enormous chocolate chip cookie. I was shocked; how could he be eating again already when we'd eaten so much lunch? He spent 15 minutes telling me he was diabetic, he needed the sugar, etc etc. He was very convincing. I got more & more concerned, saying he should not be having that much sugar, did he have his insulin with him etc until I realised he was winding me up. I was so annoyed I hit him on the arm with a teaspoon...which I had just removed from my cup of tea, giving him a rather nasty burn.

9 years and 2 DC's later, we're very happily married & the burn didn't leave a permanent scar.

marymod · 21/06/2015 23:09

My worst first date was going out for a meal with someone who was a friend of a friend. I don't know if he was particularly nervous, or I was a nightmare date, but he got horrendously drunk and although he was okay in the restaurant, on walking me home he was violently sick in the gutter. Needless to say I got a cab and then avoided him.

katieskatie82 · 22/06/2015 00:12

worst date i ever had the man actually asked me if i ever thought of having "my teeth done" I thought you cheeky thing there's nothing wrong with my teeth!!!

TartanTrousers · 22/06/2015 07:22

I was on a first date (one of my first) and didn't quite understand the ordering and eating etiquette - I was hungry and therefore just ordered what I fancied.

Spaghetti.

Spaghetti, I hear you cry! Yes, totally stupid for a first date and don't I know it...

I slurped a strand which had fallen foul of the spoon only to have it rear up in some sort of protest against being eaten where it whipped me in the eye. Ever had tomato sauce in the eye? Well, it stings like a mother...

So, not only is one cheek dripping with tomato sauce leaving a spaghetti imprint but my eye is now streaming, I think due to a stray piece of oregano that had gotten itself wedged in between my eyelid.

Not only was it painful but it was one of the most humiliating experiences of my life (till then!) Oh, the shame!!

asuwere · 22/06/2015 10:14

most awkward date was when I turned up and realised that it was a date - had thought it was a group of people from work, but it was just him and me! (I wouldn't have said yes to him if I'd known that!) Then, we went into the restaurant, the owner looked a bit shocked but took us to our table right at the back, near the toilet.... Apparently, my date had gone in to book the table with a male friend and the owner had assumed the table for 2 was for those two...seemed he didn't want them at the front of the restaurant! My date ordered scallops for starter, then struggled to eat them as hadn't realised they were fish, which he doesn't like! Still, been married to him for 10yrs now! (I often wonder why!)

amelia4levi · 22/06/2015 18:00

Not watched it yet..... But when i first met my fiance we went to share our first kiss... and due to his Cocky Cheekiness he Turned his head away! i Blushed!
Well it worked because we are still together after 7 years lol but was very embarrassing

mclarkie · 23/06/2015 10:13

I have seen the trailers and interviews with Simon Peg, looked to be an interesting take on the well worn romcom movie machine.
My 1st date was in the pub.

soozybee1 · 23/06/2015 17:42

Didn't like music, had a tv but it was broken so did not watch. did not go to the cinema. The only books he read we're about molecular science. When I asked him about his job he said I wouldn't understand. Lol needless to say I left early and did not return his calls.

jt75 · 23/06/2015 21:14

I haven't seen the film.
