I see Hope and Glory has been mentioned a couple of times; for me it's the pinnacle of British Film. I also love The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Cold Comfort Farm

If you can find it, Invasion Quartet is brilliant. It's a parody of The Guns of Navarone starring Spike Milligan and John Lewis Mesurier, amongst others.

Ealing Comedies

It's got an american director and lead but An American Werewolf in London is set in Britain (funnily enough!) and is a great film.

They've probably already been suggested but I love both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Wasn't as keen on World's End though.

28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later or The Descent if he likes blood and gore. Dog Soldiers is hilariously funny.
