Has anyone got any examples of sexism here in UK recently?
husband truly believes there is not much sexism “these days” 🙄 we work in the same profession and i gave him a few examples of at work and he was like “really! I’m sure most people don’t experience sexism nowadays”
I agree we have come a long way but also think he doesn’t see and a lot of little things will go un noticed

I’m not in uk I’m in Ireland but just got given a load of written info about weaning from the health visitor . It said on the leaflet “a mothers instinct is very powerful so if you don’t feel they are ready take a break and try again at a later stage”. It just irked me for some reason .

The inspector who came to my lab and assumed that my (male) deputy was the boss.

I'm literally been gang stalked and harrassed by like 20+ white men atm, started off with the male neighbours on each side (one who regularly watches and voyeurs me through my bathroom window) and they got disgusting men from the pub involved. The police have done nothing (white male officers in charge) and say there is no evidence as they all stuck up for each other so filed the case. They've also been super racist towards me. They didn't even give them words of warning so they got worse and I've had to fight as a woman of colour living alone for 5 months to get the police to even ask them politely to leave me alone.

Thats one example.

Just look at Pornhub and the way in which violence against women, their fear & degradation, is not just normalised but eroticised for male consumption.

Or look at Katie Price and her obscene pumped up breasts & haunted eyes.

Look at the adverts for plastic surgery clinics, and anti aging creams and miracles.

Look at the Daily Mail screeching about how any female celebrity ‘puts on a leggy/busty show’ every time she leaves the house to buy a pint of milk.

On reflection, don’t look at any of those things. Not a pleasant way to spend a Sunday. Look at domestic abuse statistics instead.

My partner and I are not married. When our son was born we both wanted him to have our surname, we agreed to double barrel it with both our names. My name is first.
Several of the mums I'm friends with at school were also unmarried and gave their sons the dad's surname. They didn't even consider their own name. I find that sad .

Also, fanny wash. You can buy fanny wash, but not bollock wash.

Oh actually, yes you can online, but not in everyday shops.

everychildmatters · 08/11/2025 21:38

@clarepetal I agree with you but I suppose nearly all women take their husband's name upon marriage so it's unfortunately not that surprising.

The expectation to do this is enormous. I suspect most do it without thinking.

And the pushback on those of us that don’t is insane. I had a boss try and tell me it was illegal to not change your name on marriage as a female. 🙄

everychildmatters · 12/11/2025 19:53

@ItTook9Years I've also had to correct people that tell me I'm a Mrs because I'm married. Such ignorance!!

But if you keep your "maiden" name, you're (probably) keeping your dad's name. And even if you take your mum's surname, hers was probably her dad's as well.

We need a whole new system for surnames really.

people always bring this up.

but it’s ok for a man to keep his dad’s surname? So women keeping their dad’s surname is still bowing to the patriarchy, which somehow still justifies changing names to someone else’s dads name?

I’ve done some genealogy for a relative recently. It’s easy to follow male lineage, because birth, death and marriage all link up. You have the girls’ birth, but to find their children and death certs is so much more difficult, because you have the extra step of having to find their marriage cert and marriage name to trace them after they get married.

i got my male relatives names, marriage, death, children, gravesites very easily. I’ve only been able to get one female relatives details confidently, because she did not get married. The rest are lost.

To believe that all single women must need a man and cannot cope on their own.

To believe that all single parents cannot possibly cope on their own and cannot raise successful grounded and happy children and young people even when they are 20!

Men receive praise and admiration if they become single parents whereas women receive pity or worse still judgement and even unsolicited advice!

Sadly the patriarchy is very much alive and well.

The internal vagina is. The labia and vulva isn't.
