Conscription for women

I’ve just read what the head of Army has announced on DM that it’s likely conscription is to return if the conflict with Russia escalates. Reading up on it and asking some people who I believe are in the know they seem to think this might be first war where women will be expected to fight on the front line. I’m going to be honest this terrifies me is anyone else ready to die in a ditch in Russia somewhere? I thought these days were over but apparently even with atom bombs we still have to duke it out the old fashioned way.

No thanks!

NotMarriedToAHouse · 24/01/2024 06:44

What's the cut off age? I might be safe. Either way, I don't think I would be conscripted due to family circumstances.

FizzyStream · 24/01/2024 07:01

It sounds likely to me. The more "cannon fodder" the bigwigs have the better in their opinion. I wonder how it'll work for people who have come here illegally. Will they be forced to fight for a country they've claimed as their own?

Either way this whole world has turned into a shitshow. If only women had more power there wouldn't be the need for all this willy waving.

MRSMTO · 24/01/2024 07:04

They'll have to shoot me at dawn then because I'm not fighting fuck all.

Same.

ChristmasTreeCookies · 24/01/2024 07:07

Nah.

KvotheTheBloodless · 24/01/2024 07:09

Nonsense. It won't happen.

Cellotapedispenser · 24/01/2024 07:13

I'm too old but I worry about this for my DC in a few years. I would hide them in a cupboard rather than let them go and fight and die in a ditch for a bunch of rich people. I think how much we all know about the causes of wars and who profits I would hope everyone normal on both sides would refuse but I know that's unlikely. What's happening in Gaza ,despite all the global protests and letters to mps, shows that normal people have minimal sway over wars.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/01/2024 07:13

I'm more worried about nukes tbh.

TheDefiant · 24/01/2024 07:15

Pshaw!

There's a massive list of people the Army will call up before conscription begins. I know. I'm on one of those lists.

Scare mongering by that tabloid.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/01/2024 07:17

He's trying to get higher funding and investment/recruitment, not a bunch of unwilling 40 year olds jumping in and out of trenches somewhere in Eastern Europe/Middle East/Eastern Africa/etc.

TheCadoganArms · 24/01/2024 07:18

How would you feel if the call went out for conscription of men between the ages of say 18 - 40?

110APiccadilly · 24/01/2024 07:19

I suspect your chances of being conscripted into a frontline position are low. They won't want unwilling women in the frontline. Apart from anything else, if you get pregnant then they have to get you home - and I'm sure most of the individuals on this thread wouldn't see that as an option, but put lots of women on the frontline, and some of them will probably get pregnant, either accidentally or deliberately. Conscripted into a support role, possibly.

There's also the practical issue of exempting those with caring responsibilities - yes, this applies to men as well, but the numbers of lone parent men are smaller.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/01/2024 07:21

If they are desperate enough to be conscripting 40yo women with kids to the front line we are screwed anyway

Exactly the same.

This really made me laugh!!

Hmmm why do your thoughts jump there directly?

No doubt all those pesky illegal immigrants will be in Rwanda by then - so no need to ponder.

Fliopen · 24/01/2024 07:38

It's scaremongering as usual.

I would be relieved that my men of that age would be medically exempt.

Roselilly36 · 24/01/2024 07:57

I wouldn’t give it headspace, just the DM online giving the nation its daily dose of fear. It will never happen.

Tatumm · 24/01/2024 08:03

The public largely won’t comply.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 24/01/2024 08:23

Apart from the fact that it won't happen, why should women be exempt from conscription? We are no longer excluded from combat missions in the army, something we have been fighting for since being allowed to join the armed forces.
FWIW I don't think anyone should be conscripted, but I do feel for all those men of eligible age in Ukraine who have been barred from leaving the country while the women and children are allowed to.

egowise · 24/01/2024 08:23

They have failed me and my family time and time again. They can fuck off.

They'll have to shoot me before they take my sons. Fuck this country, my sons aren't dying in a ditch for these bastards.

We'll leave the country before they force my sons to fight a war they don't want.

PuttingDownRoots · 24/01/2024 08:33

I wonder what mothers in Ukraine would have said when their invasion was only theoretical rather than it actually happened?

Its very easy to say "Fuck no" at the moment. We are under no threat. But we might feel very different in reality if there were bombs and tanks etc.

I bet mothers in Russia feel the same too
