I don't think there is any reason not to call up women.
After all, nearly every role in all three services is now open. And people have campaigned long and hard to make it so. So if we need conscription, then I think it should be for everyone.
But put the comments into context - this is a shot across the bows about numbers in the Forces. The establishment has been cut, and recruitment (now outsourced to Capita) is failing to meet targets even for the smaller number.
At some point, ideally soon, the Government is going to have to decide if the Armed Forces are to wither to the point they can no longer fight a major land campaign in Europe.
So instead of just saying "lop a bit more off the defence budget" when there is a gap elsewhere; I think they're telling the government that it needs to decide soon, for now and for future generations, what sort of Armed Forces the country needs. And then fund it.
Not a chance of an answer from the current shower of shite. But the next administration (Starmer, pres) won't be able to keep ignoring it.
