Conscription for women

I’ve just read what the head of Army has announced on DM that it’s likely conscription is to return if the conflict with Russia escalates. Reading up on it and asking some people who I believe are in the know they seem to think this might be first war where women will be expected to fight on the front line. I’m going to be honest this terrifies me is anyone else ready to die in a ditch in Russia somewhere? I thought these days were over but apparently even with atom bombs we still have to duke it out the old fashioned way.

Its very easy to say "Fuck no" at the moment. We are under no threat. But we might feel very different in reality if there were bombs and tanks etc.

I'm sure people would but several countries between us and Russia and we are surrounded by a large body of water - even the Nazi war machine didn't think it could take the whole of the UK - they planned on SE England and never pulled that off.

I suspect like many have said this is trying to drum up more investment in armed forces and defence more generally - especially as USA could pull back their funding and support under Trump presidency.

The war in Ukraine not gone well for Russia- they are currently facing vocal opposition from reservists called up wives to send them home.

Long term out country doesn't have enough young people - sending ones we have to get killed in far off country will be politically very unpopular and demographically and economically a really bad move.

I am not sure they would make it there would be too much

'she looked at me funny she wants to sleep with my bf'

'they said our uniforms will be brown but that will will wash me out and I will have to where foundation I need to kick off'

'I am being made to clean my gun but the oleomw next one me is doing it faster than me and now she is going to gossip about me in the mess tent'

VinegarTrio · 24/01/2024 08:50

I simply don’t believe that the UK government will be conscripting anyone.

It’s not the early 20th century. The armed forces are highly professionalised and a bunch of conscripted ransoms would be useless. Worse than useless - they’d require so much effort and attention to try to get them to do anything it would likely be counterproductive.

This is all just scaremongering nonsense.

Apart from the fact that it won't happen, why should women be exempt from conscription? We are no longer excluded from combat missions in the army, something we have been fighting for since being allowed to join the armed forces.
FWIW I don't think anyone should be conscripted, but I do feel for all those men of eligible age in Ukraine who have been barred from leaving the country while the women and children are allowed to.

This all day long!

Why is it acceptable for women to be treated differently when it suits? As a woman who served in the Armed Forces I am against conscription for men and women, but as we've fought for equality in the AF for years and years you can't pick and choose which equality you want.

VinegarTrio · 24/01/2024 08:53

And the UK is not Ukraine. That makes a big difference.

There is no way the British government is conscripting anyone to fight the Russians.

Funnily enough it was Fuck all like that when I was in the military!

How pathetic.

I hate threads like these where women change into the women from the last century.

Crying at home for their men. Jesus thought we'd moved on from that outdated image.

Anyway as PP said it will never happen. Conscription in general. And if it does (which it won't) of course it should be men AND women.

Why wouldn't it?

You get a special woman pass do you? Flutter your eyelids? Wear pink?

He's trying to get higher funding and investment/recruitment, not a bunch of unwilling 40 year olds jumping in and out of trenches somewhere in Eastern Europe/Middle East/Eastern Africa/etc.

this. he’s trying to get more funding and attention and staff put into the army (rightly so, as they’re short of all these at the moment). the last thing the army wants is to train a bunch of unwilling middle aged women to fight 😀(i’m one of those middle aged women)

thefallen · 24/01/2024 08:57

If nuclear war begins, I will kill myself. I'd rather not die in a ball of fire or of radiation sickness. I'm too old and disabled to be conscripted thankfully.

parietal · 24/01/2024 08:58

If there is conscription for men, it should be also applied for women. There are lots and lots of non-frontline roles that need people - truck driver, coordinating information, logistics etc, that could fit people (of either sex) who don't have the physical fitness to carry a gun.

puncheur · 24/01/2024 08:59

I honestly can’t see how conscription would work in the UK. There would be mass non-compliance. Conscription only works if it has the support of the public at large and the majority of conscripts are signing up willingly out of a sense of duty to their country. That’s not going to happen.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 24/01/2024 08:59

Cannon fodder, and you won't find the children of senior politicians within miles of any danger.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 24/01/2024 09:00

Just yours and mine.

Cancelledcurio · 24/01/2024 09:02

@TheBigHat same and my daughter too ! We'd be dead by the Bomb before my weans will take the Kings' bloody shilling. They can feck right off with their useless wars. Enough of my family have been fecked over by them throughout the years.

Tatumm · 24/01/2024 09:04

Does anyone here really care enough about their fellow public to put their life on the line?

MermaidEyes · 24/01/2024 09:06

As if!! Our prisons are full to bursting, they can send some of them first.

willingtolearn · 24/01/2024 09:07

I am concerned by how fear could be used to manipulate people, as it was during covid.

Social media is a strong persuader that is used by a huge number of young people.

There is a large group of young people who are looking to be part of something bigger, to belong to a group, to feel like they matter.

Put this together and I think young people (boys and girls) could be 'persuaded' that they were doing something noble and necessary.

Considering the many difficulties the young people coming of age are having and how little investment has been made in their future, I would totally disagree with them once again bearing the cost for our society.

I unfortunately am not rich or powerful so it doesn't matter what I think.

mpsw · 24/01/2024 09:10

I don't think there is any reason not to call up women.

After all, nearly every role in all three services is now open. And people have campaigned long and hard to make it so. So if we need conscription, then I think it should be for everyone.

But put the comments into context - this is a shot across the bows about numbers in the Forces. The establishment has been cut, and recruitment (now outsourced to Capita) is failing to meet targets even for the smaller number.

At some point, ideally soon, the Government is going to have to decide if the Armed Forces are to wither to the point they can no longer fight a major land campaign in Europe.

So instead of just saying "lop a bit more off the defence budget" when there is a gap elsewhere; I think they're telling the government that it needs to decide soon, for now and for future generations, what sort of Armed Forces the country needs. And then fund it.

Not a chance of an answer from the current shower of shite. But the next administration (Starmer, pres) won't be able to keep ignoring it.

Something to ask about when campaigning starts properly

bluefrog11 · 24/01/2024 09:17

Tatumm · 24/01/2024 08:03

The public largely won’t comply.

I would have thought the same, however think about Covid and how the general public typically responded. We are given very little scientific evidence for the largest restriction in public freedoms since WW2 and yet the majority complied. Anyone who questioned (me!) was labelled some sort of dangerous liability to public health.

People went over the top with compliance! So I think people would comply and it would be seen as anti-British not to.

Your first mistake is reading the Daily Fail. Why do you read such absolute nonsense?! I’m astounded that there people who believe anything they read in these shitrags

Well they didn't report it incorrectly to be fair to them, the official did say it.

Whether or not you believe it will actually happen is, of course, another matter entirely.

mobogogi · 24/01/2024 09:24

In today's army men and women are equals, so yes they would be treated the same.

But!!!!

a. Nobody wants conscription, it's an old general fallen out with his bosses spouting nonsense
b. There's lots of role's within the armed forces and they put you where you are suited, DD's friend is an officer in the logistics core, she seems to mostly organise banquets Confused from her tales.
c. It takes a long time to train anyone up anyway.
d. Most warfare is fairly remote these days, they need computer engineers not brawn

11NigelTufnel · 24/01/2024 09:28

Nah, conscription won't happen. Warfare isn't just marching at each other in square formation any more. It's just scaremongering, of which there seems to be a lot lately.

mobogogi · 24/01/2024 09:29

@TinderTime

Well put. My dd is deployed currently, her dp is at home! And the women are treated equally, plus very good policies all around. Definitely upped their game. She's impressed

Sure I wouldn't wipe my backside with it and anyone with more than 3 brain cells probably wouldn't read it but I presume they don't actually make up news just report it like the readers are 5

candaby653 · 24/01/2024 09:34

Would love to know who you know that's "in the know"
