Conscription for women

I’ve just read what the head of Army has announced on DM that it’s likely conscription is to return if the conflict with Russia escalates. Reading up on it and asking some people who I believe are in the know they seem to think this might be first war where women will be expected to fight on the front line. I’m going to be honest this terrifies me is anyone else ready to die in a ditch in Russia somewhere? I thought these days were over but apparently even with atom bombs we still have to duke it out the old fashioned way.

You realise that equality isn't treating people the same don't you?

I was watching one of these 'back in time' series, the one that takes place on a high St.

When it gets to WWII they 'conscript' the men aged 18 - 41. But they said they would not send all of them to the front, so the butcher was sent to the catering corps.

Some men were not allowed to sign up, these included Doctors and farmers.

And as I have already said, women were conscripted.

As a country preparing for or involved in war there are things you need to do other than fight. You need food distribution, you need munitions. You need to ensure children are cared for. You need communications.

This is the reason some occupations are exempt not to exempt a whole sex on the rule of 'I will do pick and mix feminism'

But that doesn't happen.

Whether we like it or not if there was a need for conscription a lot more women than men would be full time parents. If they are conscripted then you have the problem of finding childcare.

Do you know what if you join a regiment as a musician you will never be on the front line? Musicians are stretcher bearers in times of war.

And as I have repeatedly said women were conscripted in WWII.

I can see a case for it.
I wouldn't be happy about it for my daughters though given the constant press reports of misogyny and sexual assault in the Forces. They need to sort that out. All women regiments?

Currently men and women are mixed in regiments.

I'm not sure if you are aware but support to RAMC is very much front line - gathering wounded soldiers from the battlefield is atrociously dangerous, and not a role I would want (give me a rifle any day, rather than be a sitting duck). Even in regular tours now musicians travel in hot zones, are subject to the same risks of IEDs, missiles, suicide bombers, etc. as they are sent to Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. albeit they are not running into combat but instead playing music at the forward bases.

To be honest, I don’t even think conscription would be viable for the males in the UK. I never felt British people showed all that many signs of patriotism and I think most would flee to the EU or wherever a relative could be found if it came to that.

Yes I know currently regiments are mixed sex. That's why I would t be happy. If there is to be mass conscription single sec would undoubtedly be safer for women

Define safer? In a wartime situation I'll take the strongest, toughest, most likely to survive people either side of me, that can help me if I get into trouble / injured etc. Men are traditionally stronger, so more easily able to carry me out if I got shot, for example. They can typically run faster to take out a sniper position that is a threat to the unit. I wouldn't risk my life because I just wanted to be girls together. Now I can utterly see that in reverse, men not wanting slower, weaker women but I'd argue my tactical skills and marksmanship are stronger, therefore overall I'm an asset not a liability.
