Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck got married at the weekend and Jennifer has now changed her name to Jennifer Affleck. Just Why? I'm surprised to be honest. Especially as she's so famous etc.

@TheLassWiADelicateAir it comes from your father.

It's still your name- following that "logic" your husband's name is his father's name so you would be taking your father in law's name.

Men's names come from their fathers! How is it different? Why can nobody answer it? Why is my name my fathers, but a man's name is his, not his fathers?

I only know one woman IRL who kept her maiden name when getting married. Just one. Even a friend who was marrying a man named Mr Butt took his surname Confused lol.
It's mainly Mn where I hear of people keeping their maiden name.

But regardless, surely the very idea of feminism is being able to keep or change your name if you want.

No. Feminism is a political ideology that is about challenging the patriarchal systems of power that have oppressed, and continue to oppress, women.

It's not a generic "if a woman does it, it must be right" idea.

No one can answer that question because the belief system that says women only ever have their father's name, or their husband's name, but somehow every man's name is "really his own", is profoundly illogical and wrong.

Why are so many people sneery about even asking a reasonable question? There are valid arguments on both sides and it's a general topic worthy of discussion; this being a sensible prompt for it. It's not like people are writing her letters telling her she's wrong. That would be rude.

Why are you resurrecting an old thread? 🧟‍♂️

50 something here getting married for the first time next year. I've decided I want to change my name. I will leave the name I share with my childhood abuser. Being estranged from birth family since my twenties, I am happy to share my future husband's name. He is my family.

I suggest you stop being so bloody judgey. Nobody is demanding you do it.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. You could have changed your name before now though.
