Anyone taking Citalopram?

Doctor has just started me on them.
Just interested to know if you have taken them and if you found they helped. Some of the side effects sound a bit worrying but I have taken them as I am fed up with feeling so low (have been now on and off for 3 years).

The other day I really lost it with ds1 over something trivial.
I did not feel that I was in control at all & panicked.
I have lots of moments like that.

Do anyone ever feel like they are asking for help but no one seems to be noticing. I love my 2 kids with all my heart but ever since the baby was born I have been struggling to cope, its not just the baby thing its a whole general life thing. I have been through lots of bad times in the last 18 mths and I just seem to have these times where things are really hard.Have spoke to my Hv and she has been about as much as a chocolate teapot. The doctor suggested going on citalopram which I have been taking and seeing a councillor who I went to see and said he couldn't help me. I have pushed but dont seem to be getting anywhere. I find it hard as I dont have many friends around where I live and feel quite lonely and isolated. Sorry for the ramble.

Went back to see GP for repeat prescription and he has upped by doseage to 40mg. He asked me if I was happy with this and, although I'm not, I'm willing to try anything to get back on my feet. Told him that this month I had about a week or so of feeling pretty great but the last couple of weeks I've been slipping back again.
Shall start this doseage today and just hope that I don't get any of the side effects that I suffered when I started on the 20mg. I had a lot of headaches and nausea which last a couple of weeks.

Hey Sparkler,
Sorry to hear you're feeling low again. Hopefully the night out next week will cheer you up. I don't think you should suffer too mcuh with side effects again as your body has already got used to taking the drug. Hopefully see you next wednesday

Thanks AMN. Well started the 2mg today - lets see what happens.

I can't believe it's come to this. Have had a lot of problems in the past with dm and MIL having depression. Never thought it would happen to me.

Hi Dior. Thanks for asking. Not too bad today thanks. Been quite busy with one thing or another so haven't had time to stop and think. You've just reminded me actually - must go and take my tabs.

Hi everyone

Sorry to hear your dose is up sparkler, hope you feel better soon.

I've been sick the last few days and haven't taken mine (can't keep anything down) and it's starting to hit me argh!

Bugsy2 · 03/03/2005 15:22

Sparkler1, sorry to hear you have been feeling low. I have taken Citalopram for 18 months now with no side effects apart from nausea and slightly increased anxiety in first 3 weeks. When they kicked in (after 3 wks) it was as though a miracle had occured and I felt like me again.
Now that my divorce is over & life is looking better again I have cut right down to 5mgs and should be off them completely within the next 2 months.
Please give them time to work & big hugs to you.

I really need to get a grip with myself at the moment. Have forgotten to take the tablets on a couple of occasions. Have also been drinking a lot of wine recently and I don't think it's advised to drink with the tablets. Haven't been feeling the benefits of the increased dose and I think it's down to all these things. Have been feeling quite tearful and tired this week.

Diet coke and orange squash for me this evening.

sparkler you must keep taking them on a daily basis otherwise you will not consistently bump up your serotonin levels.
As far as I know there is no contra-indication for citalopram & alcohol. I took it for 18 months & didn't stop drinking during that time.

SPARKLER1 · 10/03/2005 17:28

I know - I have started taking them at bedtime as I have been feeling tired during the day. Have gone to bed and remembered in the morning.

i've been taking it for about 3.5 weeks now (seeing gp on monday for a progress report) and it seems to be working good. i'm sleeping good at night and being able to cope a lot better and i'm generally -feeling- better. i hope others who are taking it are doing well on it too.

as far as drinking alcohol while taking it- the leaflet with my tablets advised against drinking alcohol, but i've drank while taken them and have not experienced any ill effects...

SPARKLER1 · 11/03/2005 16:45

Lunarx what doseage are you on? Can't say I have noticed much difference between the 20mg I started on and the 40mg I am on now.

OP posts:
blueteddy · 11/03/2005 16:47

I didn't stop drinking while taking them either SPARKLER!
It would be too much of an impossible task for me!!!
They say that it can take a good 4 weeks b4 you notice any real changes & you MUST take them regually!
Saying that, I got moved up 2 a higher dose due to a slip back.

SPARKLER1 · 11/03/2005 16:48

Hi Blueteddy. Sorry to hear you had a slip back. Hope you are feeling better now. It's hard work isn't it?

OP posts:
blueteddy · 11/03/2005 16:51

Definitely!
It is hard to remember to take them regually.
I could not even manage to do that with the pill, hence my 2 ds's!

blueteddy · 11/03/2005 16:51

How long have you been on them now?

lunarx · 11/03/2005 17:07

hi sparkler, i'm on 20mg. a day..
