Day 1 of this adventure. I’ve got a headache but will soon be going to bed.
My eating window today was 8am-4pm. I’ve got so much to shift & hope I can keep this up. Anyone else want to join?

Can I ask - those of you who are consciously choosing to go longer than 16 hours fasting, why? I thought the point about 16:8 was that it's an appropriate fasting level OR you go the whole hog and do the OMAD thing? What's the thinking between making it 17 hours or 18 hours or whatever?

I mean, I sometimes go 17 hours but that's more because I try very hard not to eat before 11:30, preferably 12 because it's not always guaranteed I can have dinner cooked and eaten by 7:30. So I might have finished dinner at 7pm the night before, but I'm always conscious tonight it might be 8pm. So it's my way of ensuring I never go under 16 hours fasting. But I don't consciously aim for it?

For me, I aim for somewhere between 16 and 24 hours of fasting but that's because I don't worry if I'm on holiday or have something social going on and have a shorter fast at other times, although I try to always do 12 as a minimum. I track my fasts on an app and try to make sure my average doesn't get below 16 hours.

It totally depends on what I'm doing, and the flexibility is what I love about fasting. For example when I'm at home I usually open my eating window somewhere between 12pm and 1pm but on working days I can go much longer because I don't really get a lunch break anyway so I prefer to get a longer fast in on those days rather than try and rush eating in under 15 mins or having to eat at my desk. So I opened once I came home from work at 5pm.

@IdLikeToBeAFraser autophagy kicks in after around 16h so I like doing closer to 17h-18h if I can last.

Thanks @Cashew1 . It did feel good to finally see some loss a couple of weeks on the trot.
18 hrs fast
lunch: prawns and some chickpea with salad. An apple.
dinner: turkey chilli on oven fries, tbsp homemade guacamole and tbsp Greek yoghurt.
2 glasses of rose and then no more!!!!!

Queencam · 20/09/2024 19:13

Congrats on a further loss @greengreyblue you’re making great progress. Must be motivating after flatlining a few weeks back.

After a 16 hour fast had a ham, avocado, cream cheese bagel - trying the gluten free ones to try and avoid the wheat bloat. Dinner was a cannellini bean dish with leeks in a romesco sauce with lots of basil and Parmesan. Love swapping out pasta for beans to get in extra fibre and avoid carbs.

About to start the next fast. Always tougher to stick to it at the weekend..!

Cashew1 · 20/09/2024 20:20

18 hour fast

Big salad of leaves, beetroot, tomato, cucumber, quinoa, hummus, vegan ham
Small bowl of fruit and fibre for pudding

GameOfJones · 20/09/2024 20:27

23 hour fast.

Yoghurt and nuts
Stir fried noodles with onions, chillis and red pepper
Two G&Ts and a handful of crisps

Wow, and how long is your open window following the fast? Just an hour or longer?

Always longer than an hour, I had that between 5pm and 8.30pm. I don't strictly do OMAD, I just occasionally (once a week or so) will have a longer fast if I've got a really busy day at work so am distracted. I've not gone over 24 hours yet but am considering building up to it for once a month or so.

Queencam · 21/09/2024 13:11

Have done a 24 hour fast once and found it alright! Would defo do again.

Was it 24 hr fast Rishi Sunak did once a week I think

greengreyblue · 21/09/2024 13:23

I’ve done it once by accident . Was fine as I was busy and didn’t plan it. Did suddenly get very hungry but weirdly couldn’t eat that much!

Cashew1 · 21/09/2024 14:18

Interesting to hear about the 24 hour fasts. My longest is 19 so far. My app says I have averaged 16 hours for the last 3 weeks which I am happy with, especially as I started by flexing the weekends.

Anyone else finding weekends harder? In work I can keep myself with meetings where it is impossible to eat!

greengreyblue · 21/09/2024 17:05

I find the days easy at weekends as I wake up later so it’s not so long until lunchtime . The evenings are trickier as I do enjoy a few drinks at the weekend so I’m trying to reduce how many, keep the enjoyable ones( first couple) or a nice lunchtime stop off at a pub when out somewhere. Last night I could easily have poured another glass after two but stopped myself and felt so glad this morning. We are out this evening for dinner but I’m driving so that helps. Will be sensible but enjoy my food. I don’t eat puddings out anyway.
19 hr fast today as was at hairdressers.
lunch: poached egg on half an avocado mashed on a piece of sourdough toast. An apple.

I find the weekends much harder!

Hi everyone, sounds like you are all doing well. I am much busier now that I am back at work and have managed to keep up with the fasting until my lunch at 1pm. Kitchen closes at 8pm so generally doing 17:7. I have lost 7lbs now since the beginning of August and I’m pretty happy with that. 7lbs down and another 7 to go. The only thing is that I’m really struggling to get in my exercise atm so although I’m continuing to lose weight I feel like I’m starting to look less toned.

Cashew1 · 21/09/2024 19:14

Ah makes sense, I get up the same time each day (5 year old)

16 hour fast today
Overnight oats with blueberries
Quinoa, tofu, roast veg, cabbage and hummus salad
A few snacks along the way: oat cakes with cottage cheese, a crispbread with hummus and cucumber, a bite of my daughter's milky way, options chocolate

Closing my window after 6 hours

That’s very good on the weight. Also no exercise here and can relate on lack of muscle tone… Really need to find a way to make it a sustainable part of my routine. There’s not much capacity with work, two small DC and a DH who works away most the time 🫠

greengreyblue · 22/09/2024 07:27

Sounds good @Rollergirl11 we have similar weights and targets. @Cashew1 you're doing really well. @Queencam how are you feeling now?
Dinner was delicious at an Italian restaurant. Had a glass of wine, portobello mushroom and ricotta starter and then prawn and lobster linguine in a tomato and chilli sauce. Very filling and window closed at 9. But ate nothing between 1 and 8pm so was quite hungry. Still full this morning so will probably eat mid afternoon making a 17 hr fast.

greengreyblue · 22/09/2024 07:30

On the toning up, I’m now starting to think about doing some weight training and Pilates at home to tone because I’m close to target and can see what weight loss won’t address, especially being 53. DH has some weights in the garage and I have resistance bands draped over a hook and the only resistance going on is me not using them!

Cashew1 · 22/09/2024 09:39

@greengreengreyblue that dinner sounds delicious!

Do you all weigh everyday? Am back up a pound here which has annoyed me! Maybe I should weigh weekly

greengreyblue · 22/09/2024 09:54

Noooo that way(weigh) lies disappointment as many of us have found. I now only do Friday morning. You will go up and down depending on water retention. I go for Friday because my routine is pretty good in the week and gives a chance for any weekend bumps to be smoothed.

Cashew1 · 22/09/2024 11:57

Thanks for the advice. 17 hours and counting here

greengreyblue · 22/09/2024 17:49

17 hr fast
lunch : half an avocado, bit of cottage cheese.
dunner: pulled pork, flat bread and salad
