Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

*dinner, not done!

harriethoyle · 03/02/2022 19:28

Kitchen closed here on 574 @EatYourFive. Also eagerly anticipating tomorrow night's wine! Although I have to pick my husband up from the train station after work so I really hope he isn't delayed! Grin

Yay well done with three FDs this week, hopefully you will see some results this week! Can't stop thinking of the wine so having an early night to take my mind off it!

harriethoyle · 03/02/2022 20:49

Thanks Smile I'll be raging if a bit more doesn't come off tomorrow morning 😂

0.8kg off overnight which takes me to 1.2kg above my target weight... relatively boozy weekend planned but going to be super good next week to try and chip away a bit more.

Happy Friday everyone! Wine

Well done @harriethoyle

I have no idea what is going with me today but I am ravenous and I can't stop thinking about things like pizza and chips!

harriethoyle · 04/02/2022 11:43

Can you have some this weekend so mentally you're delaying rather than depriving yourself @KylieKoKo?

OP posts:
KylieKoKo · 04/02/2022 12:29

No, I simply must have it today Grin

I'm going for a swim later and then the gym for hiit tomorrow so hopefully I can burn some of it off.

harriethoyle · 04/02/2022 13:46

Unless it's a fast day crack on @KylieKoKo!!

I can't imagine fasting on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. My next one is Monday, hopefully I'll be less hungry then

incognitodorrito · 04/02/2022 16:06

Had my second PT session this am and treated myself with 8 crackers, cream cheese, thinly sliced cucumber and mango sauce on top. We are also out tonight at an all you can eat buffet. I’ve stopped recording food via MyFitnessPal and will restart Monday & Tuesday with B2B fasts.

harriethoyle · 04/02/2022 18:19

And on that note, here I am Grin. All the tea in the world coming up while I wait for lunch.

You're a hero @TheWayTheLightFalls. Or a maniac! Grin

@harriethoyle I know which of those my money is on Wink. Anyway, off for a distracting walk with DD.

KylieKoKo · 06/02/2022 18:25

Who's fasting tomorrow?

My main meal will be a cottage cheese, mushroom, tomato and red wine omelette with a side of brocolli. I also have miso soup, some cucumber and babybel cheese to snack on.

What are other fasters planning to eat?

harriethoyle · 06/02/2022 19:44

I'm fasting with you @KylieKoKo! Egg thin for lunch and spinach canneloni for tea. c.580 for day one of the b2b x

EatYourFive · 07/02/2022 07:44

Good morning, I'm here to join you, day 1 b2b. No loss last week so have to try even harder now. Just fruit and miso soup for me today until dinner which will probably be just a small portion of leftover chilli.

fizzypiggy · 07/02/2022 07:51

Hi there! Hope you don't mind me sticking my nose in Smile

Has anyone tried the simple app or the fasting type where you have a daily eating 'window'? Curious to know how you found it vs 5:2, if so?

I did the 5:2 twice. Last time was 3 years ago, I lost 4 stone and have kept it off for 2.5 years without fasting since then.

I had a lot to lose and I'm absolutely thrilled to have kept it off so long but I'd love to just shift another 10kg.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 07/02/2022 08:29

Joining for a b2b. Completely over did it at the end of last week and I'm now nursing an injury so going to have to cut down on exercise

I sat on my sofa this weekend and ate a lot
Need a good back to back!

I will be having a miso for lunch and then
Toast and eggs for tea plus an options thrown in

harriethoyle · 07/02/2022 08:31

So did I @absolutelyknackeredcow... it was filthy weather here so our only exercise was getting up to put a log on the fire!

incognitodorrito · 07/02/2022 08:36

Joining in for a B2B - I need to stop rewarding myself with food after B2B days - totally overdid it at the weekend. Half an orange for breakie, steamed brocolli for lunch and don’t know yet for dinner - planning to go swimming with DD this evening. Good luck everyone !!

Fillybuster · 07/02/2022 15:17

Checking in for a FD in the hope that doing so will stop me heading to the kitchen for a snack. I've not been so strict over the last 6 months whilst maintaining, but gained an impressive 7lbs over the weekend which combined with noticing my bad habit starting to creep back has given me a bit of a kick up the backside to get back on the wagon!!

I'm finding today super hard...loads of water, mug of miso soup and spoon of marmite already consumed. Need to hold tight for a few more hours...someone hold my hand please Confused

KylieKoKo · 07/02/2022 15:36

@Fillybuster I find herbal tea helps me a lot when I feel like this!

Hang in there you can eat what you fancy now tomorrow.

Fillybuster · 07/02/2022 15:44

Thanks for the hand-hold @KylieKoKo, it makes a difference not to feel like I'm on my own!

Yy, herbal tea. Good shout Grin And please tell me a bit more about the red wine omelette?
