Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I’m on day two b2b today.

I had a cup o soup for lunch yesterday, cream of chicken only 80 calories!

Then I had bolognese stuffed red peppers for dinner, no idea exactly how many calories but I’m sure it was less than 500, so all good.
I have one more packet of cup I soup left, so I think I’ll have that today too.

I prefer to have something small for lunch, so I can have a more substantial dinner.

Maybe fish cake and veg tonight, I got some baby broccoli and green beans in the fridge that are going so need to use those up

KylieKoKo · 02/02/2022 08:20

I was 0.6 pounds down from my last post fast weigh in this week. Not much off but going in the right direction at least!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 02/02/2022 09:27

Some great losses here - well done all Smile
I'm only 200g down off last week so basically a maintain. It was TOTM so a really hard one.
I've basically concluded that this is as low as my body wants to go. I'm six foot and 10 stone 13 after a b2b which gives me a bmi of 21.5 ish.
I'm now seeing my b2b as a way of maintaining my normal diet - healthy but lots of treats, booze at weekend etc.
I'm peri menopausal so that won't help either. I might be able to go a bit lower in summer but until then it's pretty clear my body is saying no

Solderingon · 02/02/2022 10:49

I might also pop the smoked salmon in the fridge to defrost. I'm mostly veggie but make a few occasional exceptions for the good stuff.

How was your PT session @incognitodorrito ?

Day 2 of b2b this morning and I've already been to bootcamp. It was not my most impressive performance, but I can't blame that on the fasting Blush
Protein yogurt, fruit and water until an omelette for dinner for me.

incognitodorrito · 02/02/2022 16:43

@Solderingon - thank you for asking. PT session was great - really feeling it today though ! I’m hoping it will help build my confidence to enter the weight lifting zone at gym on my own to work out. I’ve got another session booked for this Friday as need to build gym visit into my habits and routine. I really enjoy it, just need more confidence.

sweetgingercat · 02/02/2022 17:39

Does anyone sometimes have a day when it seems REALLY hard to keep the hunger at bay? This is me today and I will have bust my 500 for sure, by the end of it...

Any tips? I really need some help here!

harriethoyle · 02/02/2022 18:31

Yes @sweetgingercat! All the time! Lots of black coffee, herbal tea, squash, diet coke etc. Basically all the fluids to give you an illusion of fullness. Bulk out your veg so it's an absolute heap on your plate. Clean your teeth after you've eaten. Hot bath early bed!

3rd back to back today. Think doing 2 back to backs Monday and Tuesday, has reduced my appetite today. Kitchen closed at 587. Well done everyone.

@sweetgingercat I really struggled at the beginning. I find it easier now I save all my calories, for my 5pm meal and treat. In the daytime I just eat an apple and drink lots of water.

EatYourFive · 02/02/2022 19:12

Kitchen closing at 576. Today was hard, maybe because I had a longer break than usual between FDs and saved lots of calories for dinner. Dinner was baked basa fillet, sweet potato and peas and it tasted divine.
@beautiful3 that's impressive, not sure I'd manage 3 days b2b!

harriethoyle · 02/02/2022 19:38

That's hardcore @Beautiful3... I'm doing my third of the week tomorrow and dreading it!

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 02/02/2022 20:32

Thanks @harriethoyle and @beautiful3. I'm not sure why it's so hard today. I've decided not to beat myself up over it. I normally do 4:3 instead of 5:2 and I've been doing a lot of hard work in the allotment this week so I'll make it 5:2 and go back to 4:3 next week.

3 back to backs is really impressive beautiful3.

@absolutelyknackeredcow congratulations for reaching your target! How long have you been doing 5:3 for and how much weight have you lost? It's super impressive and feels great to have someone on the board who has made it! Well done!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 02/02/2022 21:48

So impressed with those doing 3 b2b! No way could I do that

@sweetgingercat I originally lost 1.5 stone for a significant birthday in 2018 which is when I started 5:2.
Over lockdown I stopped and put some back on and have been pretty disciplined since May ish last year. I do look great but eat a lot {and am highly active) so never managed to maintain at 6:1

harriethoyle · 02/02/2022 22:02

Same @absolutelyknackeredcow 6:1 leads to gain for me. I think it's partly because it feels easier to cheat a bit if it's just one a week whereas 2 is a proper commitment but not so onerous its not sustainable if that makes sense...

OP posts:
KylieKoKo · 02/02/2022 22:07

I can't imagine doing 3 in a week, let alone back to back!

EatYourFive · 03/02/2022 07:30

Here for Day 2 of B2B. Anyone joining me today? @harriethoyle are you doing a full on FD or just reduced calories today?

harriethoyle · 03/02/2022 07:45

I'm doing a proper FD today @EatYourFive - calories planned out at 574 🤞

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 03/02/2022 07:57

Yay @harriethoyle!
I got my calories wrong yesterday and consumed 652, still within limits but only just. Not sure why yesterday was such a struggle, FDs have been fairly easy so far this year. I can only think it's because I had a whole week between fasts, just goes to show how quickly your body adapts to consuming higher amount of calories again!

easterdaffsx · 03/02/2022 11:49

Just wow
4lbs loss in 4 days !!
So pleased .

TheWayTheLightFalls · 03/02/2022 11:59

Super easter, well done!

harriethoyle · 03/02/2022 12:10

@EatYourFive I always find the first fasts back after a break TORTOUS. The monday FD after our skiing holiday, where we ate three cooked meals a day including a four course dinner was horrific Grin. On the plus side, it eases quite quickly once you're back into a routine!

Well done @easterdaffsx !

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 03/02/2022 13:01

@harriethoyle I hope you are right! Today seems a bit better but still hard work compared to previous weeks. At least I will now only have 3 days between b2b sessions so hopefully will be back on track in no time. But will definitely try and avoid longer breaks going forward.. Luckily have no big disruptions coming up until the end of March now when I have to go on a work trip.

EatYourFive · 03/02/2022 18:31

OK I am done at 572. Don't feel like much weight, if any, has been lost this week, will see tomorrow. Really feel like a glass of wine now, at least it's easier to resist the temptation now that today is a fast day, I often give in and have a small glass on Thursdays. Hmm

harriethoyle · 03/02/2022 18:59

Resist @EatYourFive! It'll taste EVEN better tomorrow Grin Wine

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 03/02/2022 19:05

I will! Having done with friends tomorrow with plenty of wine, really can't wait!! How have you been getting on today @harriethoyle?
