Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I'm here too @Fillybuster! Also finding today tough and also heading for herbal tea in the hope of staving off the hunger pangs. If I eat before 6pm, I'm then starving at bedtime so desperate to hold off on teatime til then... am going to have a mountain of broccoli on the side!

KylieKoKo · 07/02/2022 15:53

Ha ha @Fillybuster that was meant to be red pepper omelette!

Fillybuster · 07/02/2022 16:07

Oh pants....I got my hopes up there @KylieKoKo

@harriethoyle, yup, same here. I've got a combat class at 7pm and I know that I'll be fine if I can make it through until then. Usually the endorphins from a class act as a total appetite suppressant and then I'm fine not eating until after I've got back home and had a shower, although dh has learnt to stay well out of my way at that point!!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 07/02/2022 17:34

I'm kitchen closed at 558. Hold on everyone

Beautiful3 · 07/02/2022 17:47

Well done everyone. Kitchen closed at 486. Going to try a 2nd back tomback tomorrow.

Solderingon · 07/02/2022 19:07

Hello all,

I've factored in a cup of tea later, but today should be 499. Just a single FD today, next one on Friday. Im trying not eating at all until dinner, just drinking tea and water in the day and actually it's been easier than usual. Will try it again on Friday as normally I get really grumpy by dinner time, but I haven't even noticed today.

harriethoyle · 07/02/2022 19:36

Kitchen closed on 589. Well done everyone! Some excellent willpower being flexed today.

EatYourFive · 07/02/2022 20:37

Well done everyone, delighted to see everyone has had such excellent FDs today! Kitchen closing at 490, very pleased with that.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 08/02/2022 05:06

Good morning, signing in for a FD (at 5am Confused).

Had a good SV when I weighed just now - finally broke through the 70kg barrier and am now 68.3 / 10 stone 7lb, just over 3kg away from target.

I'm logging stuff quite obsessively so can also share that this is FD no. 25 since starting on 10 November, when I was 77.5kg. I'm down 9.2kg overall. Woohoo!

Anyone else with me today?

Imsupposedtobeworking · 08/02/2022 07:16

Second FD of the week here too, didnt show much willpower yesterday as closed kitchen at 792 so much do better today..

EatYourFive · 08/02/2022 07:37

@TheWayTheLightFalls that is amazing well done! I also weighed myself today and at 64.5 kg (BMI 24.6) I'm down 5.3kg since I started November 15th (undid much of my hard work over Christmas), the lowest my weight has been in 3- 4 years. Hoping for an even lower figure tomorrow morning and then to maintain some of it.

Good luck everyone today!

harriethoyle · 08/02/2022 07:44

Fabulous SV @EatYourFive and @TheWayTheLightFalls! We've woken up to a positive PCR for Mr Hoyle so that's s ballache... I'm heading down to the supermarket after work to stock up on case I succumb too!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 08/02/2022 09:25

@harriethoyle @absolutelyknackeredcow v sorry to hear that, seems to be everywhere at the moment. Well done on the SV though and you too @EatYourFive.

Just realised we have no broccoli in the house! Nightmare. I think we have cauliflower though.

KylieKoKo · 08/02/2022 11:53

Sorry to hear that @harriethoyle

I am sure you don't need me to tell you this so don't fast if you start to feel ill!

harriethoyle · 08/02/2022 12:51

I'll take any excuse @KylieKoKo Grin but feel absolutely fine so far.

Mr H, on the other hand, is wearing the man flu dressing gown of doom... it's going to be a long week! Grin

TheWayTheLightFalls · 08/02/2022 18:50
