Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@itsevolutionbaby

That's encouraging *@absolutelyknackeredcow* *@TheWayTheLightFalls* *@harriethoyle* thanks, I'll keep going.

@KylieKoKo I had lunch and early dinner. I tried to have more protein than usual (eggs and fish), lots of salad and a bit of mash potato. I still felt like I had no energy all afternoon.

In your position I would probably swap out the mashed potato for for veg -I find steamed brocolli quite filling and you can have absolutely loads for very few calories. I also find the later I eat the easier it is.

The foods I find most filling for low calories are prawns, cottage cheese (Not the nasty low fat kind) and eggs and then veg like tomatoes, mushrooms, courgettes, brocolli and red pepper. I also cook using 3 spray so that I'm not wasting any calories on oil.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 01/02/2022 08:05

Logging in for a second day. Feeling ok and have a busy day today but what I wouldn't give for a large croissant and latte right now Smile

harriethoyle · 01/02/2022 08:11

I'm joining you @absolutelyknackeredcow - made my packed lunch only for the dog to break into my rucksack and eat my sandwich 😂 good thing I realised in time to rectify!

Chilli con carne and broccoli later on 😊 good luck fellow fasters!

Day 2 of B2B. I woke up feeling slightly hungover so am I am chugging water and have sent DP to the coffee shop for a coffee shop black coffee.

harriethoyle · 01/02/2022 09:43

Might be dehydration @KylieKoKo - I am AWFUL at drinking enough water during the day, particularly when I'm at work... I just don't think about it!

incognitodorrito · 01/02/2022 10:23

Day2 here too ! I’m bed last night for 8 to avoid the hunger pangs.. woke up so dehydrated too so trying green tea rather than litres of coffee today. Have booked a PT to start getting into weightlifting tonight. Hoping I won’t be super hungry afterwards.

harriethoyle · 01/02/2022 12:16

I've already had lunch I'm so hungry Blush Got a hairbut booked immediately after work and it's going to be tough to wait for tea til c.6.30!

Day 1 of B2B here.
Just a protein yogurt so far, but there's a pearl barley stew for dinner and and egg on toast for lunch coming soon.
I had a weights session this morning, nothing crazy heavy but I'm going to feel it later. Blush

Solderingon · 01/02/2022 12:53

@incognitodorrito good luck with your weight lifting tonight! I love it and am really new to it too.
I'm having an Aldi protein yogurt (148 Cals and 25g protein) after each session even on fast days, if you're worried about feeling wobbly.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 01/02/2022 13:08

Hi all, signing in for a Tuesday FD. It’s gone easily so far with just coffees; I’m off to a house viewing and then home for something broccoli themed Grin.

incognitodorrito · 01/02/2022 13:22

@Solderingon - I’m really excited to start, but want to ensure my technique is decent, hence the PT sessions. There’s a Lidl next door to my gym so will pick up their equivalent as my post work out tea. On another note, whoever recommended marmite with hot water and lemon juice - it’s delicious - thank you !

KylieKoKo · 01/02/2022 15:17

I am find today a bit tough, I think because it's day 2 of a b2b. I don't feel hungry exactly just a bit odd and finding it hard to focus. I did some HIIT earlier which perhaps is making me feel strange with the calorie deficit.

On the plus side I will be done til Monday next week after this and I have some smoked salmon for breakfast this morning.

incognitodorrito · 01/02/2022 18:00

@KylieKoKo - May I ask what your eating today ? I am in awe that you’ve managed to plan smoked salmon into a FD!

harriethoyle · 01/02/2022 18:49

Kitchen closing on 728 which gives an average of 615 for each b2b day. Happy with that!

OP posts:
KylieKoKo · 01/02/2022 18:53

@incognitodorrito the smoked salmon is for tomorrow's breakfast which can't come soon enough!

Today was the second day of a back to back so I had slightly more calories to play with. I had an easy peeler orange and a couple of boiled eggs earlier. I just had a small salmon fillet with roast courgette, red pepper, red onion and tomato - roast using 1 calorie cooking spray rather than my usual slug of oil mores the pity

TheWayTheLightFalls · 01/02/2022 19:00

Kitchen closed here. No idea of calories (I did know the calories of what I eat each FD when I first meal planned, I’ve just forgotten the number itself at some point!). Mountains of broccoli and an attempt at chewing each mouthful 20x before swallowing, because I notice that I’m bolting down meals to deal with errant DC; and miso soup and eggs. Lots of coffee and rooibos.

harriethoyle · 01/02/2022 19:34

@KylieKoKo have you tried spritzing salmon with lemon and baking it in foil? Or teriyaki sauce which is quite low calorie

OP posts:
Beautiful3 · 01/02/2022 19:46

2nd back to back fast today, ending in 672. Well done everyone.

KylieKoKo · 01/02/2022 20:35

@harriethoyle I had lemon on my salmon today. It was lovely. I would have assumed that teriyaki sauce was quite high in calories. I will definitely investigate for future fast days.

harriethoyle · 01/02/2022 20:41

I might have misremembered @KylieKoKo so do check!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 01/02/2022 21:02

Kitchen closed on day 2 at 670 so about 650 overall over both days
Not going to deny it
I'm starving
Breakfast made and ready Grin

incognitodorrito · 01/02/2022 21:23

Kitchen closing at 462, giving an average daily cal intake of 610. I feel Inspired and have smoked salmon defrosting fur tomorrows breakfast in the fridge.

harriethoyle · 01/02/2022 21:36

Fabulous fasts today gang! Fist bumps all round 👊

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 02/02/2022 07:53

Well done all of you who already completed your FDs for this week.
Day 1 B2B for me today, anyone else fasting today? I'm off to the office in a minute and planning to live on fruit and miso soup until dinner time.

harriethoyle · 02/02/2022 08:08

1.5kg off which is GREAT but am at my normal post fast weight which is 2kg above my goal weight... so am going to eat lightly today and fast tomorrow in the hope of getting a bit more off before the weekend. 🤞 I'd really like to be consistently at goal rather than always hovering within touching distance of it!
