Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Closed on 620 today and 750 ish yesterday. Need to plan / prep my meals better on FDs.

harriethoyle · 20/04/2022 07:01

Morning! Who's joining me for day 2?

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 20/04/2022 07:52

Good morning everyone! Back from a 10 day break feeling relaxed, 3 kg heavier and mumsnet is looking all different!😄Not too worried about the weight gain though, hopefully will be back on track soon, certainly feeling very motivated. Thankfully it finally feels like I have shifted the horrid covid so hoping to get back to my pre-covid exercise and fasting routine now.

@harriethoyle I will be joining you today, doing day 1 of b2b!

harriethoyle · 20/04/2022 08:00

Sounds gorgeous @EatYourFive ! Weight will come off as quickly as it went on I bet...

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 20/04/2022 08:13

I hope so @harriethoyle! Good luck today, have you managed to lose more weight lately? If I remember correctly you just hit 70 kg? I was tantalisingly close to 60 kg but the holiday has very efficiently moved me further from that milestone once more!

harriethoyle · 20/04/2022 09:56

@EatYourFive I had before the Easter weekend... now trying to undo the wine and chocolate damage 😂

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 20/04/2022 10:12

Same here, 3 kg worth of it! 😄

harriethoyle · 20/04/2022 17:26

Man I am HUNGRY today. Just had to break out an energency toasted thin and bovril 😆would have been very easy to fall face first into leftover hot cross buns but I'm resisting and counting down the minutes til the oven goes on for tea (34 to go!).

How's everyone else getting on?

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 20/04/2022 17:44

I have managed surprisingly well today, probably thanks to stuffing my face every day for the past 1.5 weeks! Just had a miso soup to keep me going until dinner. I think tomorrow will be a whole different story though...

harriethoyle · 20/04/2022 20:30

Kitchen closed herein 752 which isn't horrendous for day 2 b2b. I'm attempting a third tomorrow because we're going away Friday- Sunday and it will be SUPER indulgent... wish me luck! 😁

Me again… it’s been a while! I did day 2 of a B2B today - yesterday 498 (because I wasn’t sure I could manage a B2B after so long) and then today is 675. Looking forward to breakfast as ever.

I did RPM this morning which I’m just getting used to so I’m happy that it was possible to complete it fasted.

I think this is going to be a bit of a long haul!

EatYourFive · 20/04/2022 21:01

Kitchen closed at 400, saving some calories for tomorrow...

harriethoyle · 20/04/2022 21:16

An excellent restart @CrabPuff - welcome back!

That's a strong post hols FD @EatYourFive well done 😊

EatYourFive · 20/04/2022 21:28

Thanks @harriethoyle, I felt particularly motivated after all the chocolate and wine I consumed during my break! Good luck tomorrow as well, I'll be joining you.

CrabPuff · 20/04/2022 21:39

Thanks Harriethoyle, I saw you hit your GW which is v inspiring too!

Miso soup. Must buy that. I have options hot choc and bovril for bovril tea as my back ups but can always do with more.

EatYourFive · 21/04/2022 06:46

@CrabPuff miso soup is a must on fast days, I buy them from an Asian supermarket but even the itsu sachets are good and only 21 kcal each.

harriethoyle · 21/04/2022 07:30

Morning all! Signing in for a b3b a la @Beautiful3 😆not looking forward to it. Have c.700 cals planned for today so I'll see how I go... am hovering 300g above GW so that is motivating me but in a hotel tonight so no scales tomorrow morning! Half tempted to take mine in the car...!!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 21/04/2022 07:57

I would take the scales with me @harriethoyle! 😀
Good luck today, I am feeling quite hungry and a bit headachey this morning but hoping my walk to work and fresh air will help with that. Lost 1.1 kg overnight so feeling motivated.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/04/2022 18:43

Hello everyone - so impressed with those 3 x b2b! I was starving this morning -respect !
Had a great drop after b2b of 4lbs so feeling motivated for a third tomorrow.
Had a very very active day today so we will have to see how I get on

EatYourFive · 21/04/2022 20:14

Friday and weekend fasters always impress me @absolutelyknackeredcow, not sure I'd ever manage that. Good luck tomorrow if you decide to go ahead with a 3rd day.
Kitchen closed at 611 here, very happy with that, feels good to be finally fasting again!

harriethoyle · 21/04/2022 20:26

I have found today absolutely tortuous as a b2b... I'm only ever doing this again in an emergency! Kitchen closed on a lacklustre 868 😂🙈

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 21/04/2022 22:17

I’m so impressed that day3 wasn’t a write off by 10am. Amazing.

EatYourFive · 22/04/2022 08:52

Well done @harriethoyle that's still impressive! I don't think I could do 3 days in a row just yet..
Lost 1.4 kg this week, planning to do 1+2 FDs next week, have a work event on Tuesday so will fast on days around it.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 22/04/2022 12:35

I'm struggling on my Friday FD
Fridays are mega active so im starving.
I also burned 3000 calories yesterday on another really active day.
Focussing that I will be in a bikini in 5 weeks above anything else
