Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Hi everyone. I had a sickness bug yesterday. I'm absolutely fine today, but feeling hungry and delicate! I've moved my fasts to, tomorrow, so wednesday-friday. Hope you're all doing well with your fasts.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/04/2022 17:51

Done! Bit of a broccoli massacre tbh. Have now brushed teeth to help resist lure of the biscuit tin.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 12/04/2022 17:52

I was starving this morning but managed to push on til now so will make It. Going to have eggs and toast for tea and an options.
That will take me at 520 average per day

incognitodorrito · 12/04/2022 19:53

My period is due in 5 days and I want to eat spaghetti. However, I’ve managed to contain myself and have had fat free veggie soup and boiled eggs instead all day. I think I might have spaghetti for breakfast tomorrow though !

Hi everyone, I'm back from our holiday which was fantastic, but now I'm suffering from covid. Hugely irritated as I'd managed to swerve it until now, but fortunately so far it has been very mild. I'll be back again when I've recovered... I've missed our B2Bs and that excellent feeling you get after a good fast!

Good luck everyone!

Welcome back ginger - I'm sorry to hear about the covid, I hope it stays very mild.

Just sharing the link above to some very yummy looking low cal recipes. I hope the share token works.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 17/04/2022 08:58

Signing in for an Easter Sunday FD Grin. Though before you all think I'm mad, we're not Christian so Easter (and Easter chocs!) aren't a thing for us, so it should be alright. Let's see.

Have a good Sunday all!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 17/04/2022 20:37

I did it! Despite DH bringing me my fave thing, a cinnamon bun, back from town. Argh. Heaps of broccoli next to protein and an evening weeding to help me resist the biscuit tin.

Good luck Monday crew!

harriethoyle · 17/04/2022 22:37

Well done @TheWayTheLightFalls - I am made up solely of rose wine, roast lamb and chocolate Grin I'm b2b Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Might try @Beautiful3 3 in a row trick to undo the damage!

Good morning!

Joining you all on the 5:2 adventure, feeling motivated after weighing in at 12st 5lbs just now. This is the heaviest I’ve ever been (by about a stone). I’m 5ft 9”, so don’t look too bad but gone up a dress size or two in last year or so and have awful big stomach so clothes don’t fit well.

I’ve done 5:2 a couple of times in the past and seen good results. DP is doing it too. Embarrassingly, he weighs the same as me and is three inches taller. He’s very sporty and doesn’t look like he needs to lose anything but is happy to support me and likes doing healthy stuff, so that helps!

I’ll be back with updates…

incognitodorrito · 18/04/2022 09:47

Welcome @newnamenellie and good luck on your 5:2 adventures, it’s a great way to loose weight ! @harriethoyle I’m joining you and will try to complete a fasting hat trick a la @Beautiful3 this week as need to get back into the swing of things after holidays and Easter …

absolutelyknackeredcow · 19/04/2022 06:47

Morning all - joining Tues and Wednesday fasters this week and will aim to do Friday too. Need to focus. Going on hols in 5 weeks and need to get back to target weight

TheWayTheLightFalls · 19/04/2022 07:41

Welcome new! Signing in. TOTM and I have a cold so let’s see how we go. Bleurgh.

harriethoyle · 19/04/2022 08:26

Morning gang. Here we go for at least a b2b and maybe a b2b2b...! @Beautiful3 what daily calorie limit do you stick to for a triple? still 1300 over two days?
